A level I pharmacy technician works under close supervision of the pharmacist to dispense prescription drug products to end-users. This position is categorized as compliance critical and, as such, requires and is assigned responsibility for ensuring continual compliance with all regulatory requirements.

Work/Shift Hours: Monday-Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm CST

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Retrieves and labels prescription drug products.
• Totes prescription orders following pharmacist verification in preparation of product shipment.
• Maintains pharmacy inventory by organizing, restocking medications and pharmacy supplies in designated locations.
• Ensures work environment is kept tidy and organized in accordance with pharmacy standards.
• Maintains licensure necessary for employment in accordance with state and federal requirements OR is eligible for participation in an approved technician-in-training program.
• Physically capable of lifting up to 50 pounds and ascending and descending stairs as a requirement to effectively retrieve and process prescription orders.
• Effectively communicates with customers.
• May access, input, and retrieve information from pharmacy computers.
• Assists pharmacist with the retrieval of information to perform patient consultations.
• Refers veterinarian and customer medical inquiries to the pharmacist.
• Demonstrates knowledge of the layout of the pharmacy/building and location of drug products.
• Demonstrates knowledge of basic warehouse processes for safety and order filling.
• Exhibits proficiency when in use of RF scanner to pick products and complete associated tasks in a timely manner.

• Can correctly assess MOT to complete the toting process.
• Able to demonstrate where to deliver toted orders for packing and shipping based on MOT.
• Able to demonstrate, identify and separate pharmacy prescription only orders from pharmacy prescription/warehouse OTC combined orders - Understands the process for combining the orders.
• Able to demonstrate how to answer the intercom phone system, identify self as a pharmacy technician, transfer a call, and take a call on hold.
• Exhibits scheduling availability consistent with the needs of the business, which may include working beyond scheduled hours to ensure all orders are completed daily.
• Performs other duties as assigned.

• High School diploma or GED completed
• National Pharmacy Technician certification is required in states where mandated by the Pharmacy Board and preferred in states where it is not mandated
• Must be unrestricted and either licensed or registered in the resident state as required, OR eligible for participation and completion within six months of hire in an approved employer technician training program to obtain the State Board Pharmacy Technician license to continue employment if applicable
• One or more years of related pharmacy experience is an asset
• Proficiency in Microsoft applications (Outlook, Word, Excel, PowerPoint)

• Well versed in performing CMC compliance activities including Gap Analysis; assessment for Annex 3 comparative table with reference EU Member States
• Manage execution / authoring and review of CMC documentation (Module 1 , 2 and 3 / Part II ) for life cycle management - post-approval supplements, baseline dossiers, annual reports, registration renewals, response to health authority questions, assessment reports and Expert reports

Position Description:

Under the direction of others, serve on teams of primary caregivers who maintain and promote the health and well-being of research animals by providing comprehensive husbandry, basic medical care, and facility support services to facilitate successful achievement of the BRC's mission in alignment with the BRC's vision and values and in a manner consistent with established policies, procedures, and regulations.

Primary Functions

• Perform daily observations of animals and their environment to assess their health status and detect abnormal conditions. Document and report findings consistent with established procedures. Administer prescribed treatments and other interventions, which may include animal euthanasia. Maintain relevant records.
• Perform essential, daily animal care to include cleaning animal enclosures, providing clean caging, bedding, and enrichment, and supplying feed and water.
• Handle and restrain animals as needed by using appropriate techniques to allow for the care and research to be performed in a safe and humane manner.
• Sanitize animal rooms, cages, equipment, corridors, and support areas using appropriate techniques per standard operating procedures. Operate rack washers, tunnel washers, bedding dispensers, vacuum bedding disposal system, autoclaves, and floor cleaning machines. Empty garbage dumpster and operate trash compactor. Properly package waste materials to be sent for incineration.
• Receive incoming animal shipments and distribute animals into assigned rooms.
  • Monitor environment and/or machinery and equipment by obtaining, documenting, and comparing data against established standards. Maintain records by collecting and recording data to facilitate management of the facility.
  • Cross-train in all areas of the facility.
    • Assist with the receipt, stocking, and maintenance of supply inventories.
    • Maintain routine recordkeeping of such items as environmental conditions, animal inventory, and daily husbandry activities.
    • Participate in unit/department education to become more knowledgeable in research animal science.

Job Summary:

Performs daily health monitoring, minor surgery, clinical care, and enrichment for laboratory animals. Manages the rodent sentinel program and provides training to CCM and research personnel. Coordinates scheduling for coverage area.

Please note : Must be able to lift 20 to 25 lbs. Must be able to work a shift schedule that includes working both Saturdays and Sundays, possibly a staggered work schedule, occasional overtime and holidays as required. Must be able to read, write, and comprehend English in order to read signage and to read and update animal health records. Work space may be small, non-private and close to other work stations where noise level can be high. This position requires the individual to be available to work on either the Chicago and Evanston campuses as coverage needs dictate.

Must be enrolled in the university's occupational health program which entails filling out a health questionnaire. The health questionnaire is submitted to the university's occupational health provider for review. Must be willing to undergo job-related background check.

Specific Responsibilities :

Surgical Support

• Performs minor surgeries and assists the clinical veterinarians or other qualified individuals with surgical procedures. Prepares sterile instrument packs and prepares surgical suite animals for aseptic surgery. Administers anesthetic agents, intravenous fluids, and monitors anesthesia and post-surgical recovery. Submits surgery billing statements to CCM business office on a monthly basis for recharge to investigators (essential function for cost recovery).

Clinical Rounds

• Performs daily rounds to triage new animal health reports and monitor ongoing clinical cases. Communicates with veterinary staff and laboratory personnel to notify and update regarding the status of clinical cases. Performs physical examinations, make treatment recommendations, performs treatments, and consults with clinical veterinarians regarding health reports.

Environmental Enrichment

• Ensures that environmental and social enrichment is provided to the laboratory animals. Facilitates training of a variety of research animals (NHPs, pigs, cats) in various areas (clicker training, etc.). Orders and prepares enrichment supplies. Observes and oversees pair and group housing.

Colony Health Sentinel Program

• Coordinates the rodent colony health monitoring program (Sentinel Program) and incoming rodent quarantine program. Responsibilities include scheduling of quarterly and quarantine sentinel shipments with the diagnostic laboratory, ordering of replacement sentinels and review of the testing results.

Drugs, Supplies and Testing

• Dispenses non-controlled drugs and supplies form the CCM pharmacy to laboratory personnel. Performs periodic inventories of drugs, supplies, assay kits and instruments. Prepares and submits animals or specimens (blood, tissue, feces) for testing at diagnostic laboratories as determined necessary by the clinical veterinarians.

Teaching/Training

• Trains animal care staff, laboratory personnel and interns in proper animal restraint, barrier technique and asepsis. Trains laboratory personnel, interns, and AHTs in technical procedures such as intravenous injections, blood collection, intubation, catheterization, etc.

Regulatory

• Remains current with all regulations pertaining to laboratory animals including the Guide, Animal Welfare Act, etc. Maintains technical familiarity with a wide range of clinical and experimental procedures for a variety of laboratory animal species. Participates in various staff meetings, staff training and continuing professional education. Becomes familiar with relevant Animal Study Protocols and meets with investigators and laboratory personnel to discuss research needs and animal health concerns.

Minimum Qualifications:

• Successful completion of a college level curriculum in veterinary technology requiring a minimum of two years of full-time academic study in a program accredited by the American Veterinary Medical Association OR completion of a 4-year degree in animal science, biology, veterinary science, zoology or related field.
• Minimum of 4 years' experience as an animal health technician in laboratory animal medicine OR 5 years' experience as a veterinary assistant or veterinary technician in a veterinary medical facility and
• AALAS certified ALAT or equivalent combination of relevant work or education experience.
• Excellent verbal and written communication.
• Must be able to type and have working knowledge of spreadsheet, word processing and e-mail software.
• Lab animal care

Preferred Qualifications:

• At least 1 year experience in a laboratory animal research facility
• Certification by the American Association for Laboratory Animal Research at the LAT level
• Current state board licensure in veterinary technology in at least one state
• Experience in animal research

Target hiring range for this position will be between $28.00-$34.00 per hour. Offered salary will be determined by the applicant's education, experience, knowledge, skills and abilities, as well as internal equity and alignment with market data

The Animal Health Technician I (AHT I) is under the direct supervision of the Comparative Medicine Veterinarian. This is an entry level position and the job experience responsibilities include knowledge and application of relevant laboratory animal medicine standards, rules, and regulations and performing animal health technician tasks under direct or indirect supervision. The AHT I participates in maintaining the health and welfare of research animals in the vivarium, maintaining animal welfare standards, providing procedural support to research staff, and training research and comparative medicine staff on animal handling and techniques. The AHT I must be a motivated, self-starter who demonstrates a commitment to quality work, the ability to work effectively in teams, high emotional intelligence,and fosters a positive, professional environment as well as a culture of respect. The AHT I has a solid comprehension and ability to use basic computer programs including email and has good oral and written communication skills.

Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

• Clinical Care responsibilities - provides triage, presumptive diagnosis, treatment and follow up as needed for animals at CSMC. Communicates the cases to appropriate individuals and documents them using paper based and electronic systems.

• United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) Covered Species Procedural Support - Assists with surgical and non-surgical procedures in USDA covered species including pre surgical preparation, sedation, anesthesia inductions, administration, monitoring and recovery. Documents activities timely and accurately in medical records and other templates.

• USDA Covered Species Procedure Scheduling - Assists with scheduling appointments for large animal procedures which require Comparative Medicine procedural support.

• Executes assigned tasks to support the Environmental Enrichment Program.

• Maintains working knowledge of Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) protocols, policies, and Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) (to include hazardous agents).

• Equipment and room maintenance - Performs inventory, quality control checks, safety checks, and cleaning of clinical support equipment such as anesthesia machines and monitoring equipment including inventory and maintenance of assigned rooms and associated supplies within the vivarium.

• Conducts inventory and maintenance of assigned rooms and replenishes associated supplies within the vivarium.

• Executes assigned tasks to support the maintenance of the Rodent Biosecurity program.

• Trains researchers and technical staff on animal handling and restraint, dosing, blood collection, and other non-surgical techniques needed for studies.

• Assists with ensuring regulatory compliance (Post-Approval Monitoring and Facility Inspection Readiness).

• Participates in a weekend rotation to provide clinical support for research animals including dosing of medication and triage and treatment of health cases.

• Controlled Substances program - Handles and utilizes controlled substances in accordance with the Controlled Substances SOP.

• Attends all Staff and Team meetings as requested by the Supervisor

• Creates documents for any of the above-listed programs as requested by the Supervisor.

Qualifications

Education:

• A High School Diploma/GED is required. A graduate of an AVMA-CVTEA or CVMA accredited veterinary technology program is preferred.

Licenses and Certifications:

• Eligibility for certification by AALAS at the Assistant Laboratory Technician (ALAT) level upon hire.

• Valid and current driver's license is required.

Experience and Skills:

• One (1) year of experience working in a laboratory animal setting is required.

• Ability to learn, apply and maintain compliance with the rules and regulations governing the care and use of animals in research.

• Demonstrates a high standard of ethics and integrity with regards to animal welfare.

• Ability to provide and/or support a level of work excellence and accuracy; recognize and address flaws or errors that others may overlook. Ability to document tasks in an orderly, timely, and accurate manner.

• Ability to convey and/or receive written/verbal information to/from various audiences in different formats.

• Ability to demonstrate time management skills.

• Ability to appropriately prioritize tasks to complete more critical or urgent items first.

• Ability to use software applications and operate technological devices (e.g., computer, laptop, tablet, smartphone, etc.). Knowledge of Microsoft Office, Microsoft Outlook, and ability to learn other systems that support clinical work in the vivarium.
