Applications Software Engineer

As an Applications SW Engineer, this role serves as an internal bridge between Product Management and Engineering. It involves engaging customers with software requirements/interfaces, developing custom software & providing technical support, and the main point of contact for AEye customers on embedded systems. Ideally, it requires a technical understanding of high-tech products (or sensors in particular), perception technology and their applications in various customer scenarios. Flexibility and the ability to manage multiple priorities and tasks are essential. Typical responsibilities include pre- and post-sales customer support, driving customer engagement activities, gathering requirements, executing product demos, working with the AEye engineering team, collaborating and deploying solutions. Some experience in mechanical engineering to support product modeling and simulations.

Tasks, Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Supporting customer engagement in lidar deployment for non-auto markets
  • Familiarity with perception applications and working with Lidar point clouds
  • Supporting customer development and PoC projects with key customers
  • Developing customer specific software solutions, interfaces for Lidar
  • Project Management of deployment activities, including up to 20-30% travel
  • Technical support for existing and potential non-auto customers
  • Reporting lidar issues to engineering and collaborating as a team to resolve them
  • Be the voice of the customer (VOC) in providing feedback and solutions.
  • Developing test and validation plans for SW/FW releases
Essential Skills & Experience Requirements (required):
  • Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering, or similar engineering degree.
  • Experience working with external partners & stakeholders.
  • Ability to interact with and discuss technical matters with engineering managers
  • Great interpersonal, communication, and presentation skills
  • Ability to produce documentation and concise reports with a clear structure
  • Ability to handle critical customer situations and improvise as needed
  • Open to travel as required (domestic or international), some heavy lifting required
Preferred Skills & Experience:
  • Familiarity with Linux OS commands and operation
  • Strong experience with programming languages (C++/Python)

Education Qualification
  • Bachelor of Science degree or equivalent job experience.
Required Skills
  • Minimum of 5 years of development experience or equivalent in shipping web-based applications, preferably in a SaaS environment.
  • At least 1 year of experience in an Agile or related environment is preferred.
  • Experience in developing single-page applications using React.js with a strong command of related web technologies such as JavaScript, HTML5, and CSS3.
  • Experience in developing .NET APIs with a strong command of the .NET Core ecosystem.
  • Good understanding of object-oriented design and thinking, including concepts like separation of concerns and dependency inversion.
  • Experience using dependency injection to create loosely coupled modular software.
  • Proficiency in building continuous integration pipelines, with Azure DevOps or Octopus Deploy preferred.
  • Passion for and experience in creating test automation.
Nice to Have
  • Experience with Entity Framework Core or other ORM.
  • Experience with Tailwind CSS.
  • Understanding of microservices and distributed systems.

Position Summary
The Applications Engineer serves as a critical liaison between the StraightFlo Compressor Valves customer, sales, and engineering teams. This role provides both pre-sales and post-sales technical support with a focus on reciprocating compressors used in the oil & gas industry. The ideal candidate will possess both strong engineering knowledge and the communication skills necessary to support product installations, troubleshoot performance issues, develop technical documentation, and deliver compelling product presentations.

Essential Job Functions

  • Serve as the technical point of contact for customers and internal stakeholders on applications involving reciprocating compressor valves and related systems.
  • Collaborate with the Engineering Manager and sales team to review project requirements, develop proposals, and ensure timely delivery of solutions.
  • Provide engineering input and support across the full sales lifecycle-from initial project scoping, site data collection, and technical solution development to implementation and after-sales support.
  • Support the installation, commissioning, and maintenance of compressor valves; collect operational data for continuous improvement and diagnostics.
  • Develop and deliver technical presentations, product demonstrations, and training sessions for customers and internal teams.
  • Maintain detailed records of installations, field performance, and customer feedback to support product improvements and innovation.
  • Contribute to the development of marketing and training materials, including application notes, case studies, and user guides.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Mechanical Engineering from an accredited institution.
  • Minimum 2 years of experience in mechanical systems, preferably involving reciprocating compressors or similar equipment.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals with the ability to analyze and interpret performance data and mechanical drawings.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to translate technical concepts for diverse audiences.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Office tools (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook).
  • Highly organized, self-motivated, and collaborative team player.
  • Willing and able to travel domestically and occasionally internationally as required.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Experience supporting reciprocating compressors in oil & gas applications.
  • Familiarity with compressor system troubleshooting, diagnostics, and performance analysis.
  • Experience in customer-facing roles such as technical sales, field service, or application engineering.
  • Ability to develop training materials and deliver product education sessions for end-users and commercial teams.
