North Central Utility (NCU) is looking for a self-motivated and results driven Youth Apprentice Trailer Technician, to represent NCU in the semi-trailer service industry.

North Central Utility is one of the largest semi-trailer dealerships in the nation and the largest in the North Central region with 10 locations throughout Wisconsin, Minnesota and North Dakota. We offer reefer, dry van and flatbed trailers from Utility Trailer Manufacturing at all locations and vocational trailers from MAC Trailers in Wisconsin - we sell new and used semi-trailers. With Moore Space, we offer temporary storage container solutions as well. Our parts department has an extensive inventory in Heavy-Duty Truck/Tractor and Trailer parts. Our broad product line and geographic coverage ensures we are a "One Stop Shop" for truck and semi-trailer parts. Our service department offers everything from routine maintenance, certified DOT inspections to precision laser alignment, as well as complete wreck repair for trailers of all makes and models. No job is too big or too small for our skilled service technicians.

This position is a safety sensitive position, requiring pre-employment and post-accident drug testing.

Job Duties and Responsibilities - Under the direction of an experienced service technician (Mentor):
• Perform a variety of trailer repairs
• Inspect, trouble shoot, and repair trailer bodies, systems, and components
• Inspect, service, and replace trailer parts
• Test all systems and equipment for performance issues
• Use industry best practices
• Maintain and promote a safe work environment
• Assist Service Manager as needed

Qualifications:
• High mechanical aptitude
• Ability to meet the physical demands of the position including, but not limited to the ability to sit, stand, walk, bend, twist, reach overhead, stoop, squat repetitively and for long periods of time

+ Safely perform simple to complex mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, and hydraulic troubleshooting and repairs on a variety of precision production machinery and equipment, adhering to company, state and federal safety rules and regulations.
+ Learn basic machine operation, including CNC M-codes for manual manipulation of machine function to assist in troubleshooting without an operator present.
+ Troubleshoot, repair, service, install/uninstall, move, level, and align a variety of production machinery and equipment.

+ Operate various material-moving equipment (e.g., forklifts, scissor lifts, genie-booms, and bridge/jib/gantry cranes).
+ Demonstrate safe and effective utilization of various mechanical hand tools, machinist associated shop equipment such as mills, grinders, lathes, and tooling.
+ Demonstrate ability to safely and efficiently follow procedures to execute preventative and predictive maintenance as required.
+ Demonstrate ownership of safety, quality, and productivity as it relates to daily maintenance responsibilities to improve plant goals and objectives.
+ Demonstrate ability to work independently and in a team environment, assist other craft members and operations to ensure equipment is ready to meets production schedules.

+ During the program, assessments are conducted at 6-month intervals for apprentices to validate the program effectiveness as well as the demonstration of individual knowledge and skills ability.
+ A 3.0 cumulative GPA is required, in addition all core classes such as AC/DC circuits, PLC, Robotics, Hydraulic and Pneumatics, etc. apprentices are also required to achieve a 3.0 or higher to ensure our students understand technical concepts.
Physical Requirements:
+ This position requires the employee to perform work while standing a minimum of 7 hours per day and the ability to carry up to 40lbs on a frequent basis. Must demonstrate ability to conduct repetitive motion tasks daily and climb stairs and ladders, when necessary, with or without reasonable accommodation.
+ Ability to work above or below floor level and in confined spaces, with or without reasonable accommodation.
Eligibility Requirements:
+ Ability and willingness to work normal operating hours such as 1st shift (6:45AM-2:45PM), 2nd shift (2:45-10:45 PM) or 3rd shift (10:45-6:45AM).

Apprentices spend much of their day working under the guidance of a journeyman worker who guides on-the-job-learning in the critical manufacturing work processes and related tasks. In addition, apprentices participate in formal education and assessments that help them to attain valuable advanced manufacturing certification, which they can use to advance both their education and career. Apprentices participate in regular assessments that provide them with feedback on their learning and on-the-job performance. Apprentices who embrace this feedback will experience significant learning and personal development allowing them to advance their career.

  • Apprentices learn the core skills required in advanced manufacturing. This enables them to make a valuable contribution at work, while also preparing them for career advancement opportunities in the manufacturing industry.
  • Apprenticeships build strong basic and academic skills that they can use to continue their education and pursue a degree.
In order to obtain the completion credential, apprentices must successfully complete courses in industrial math, industrial communications, manufacturing technology systems and processes, industrial blueprint reading, and OSHA 10.

Basic Qualifications:
  • High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  • Must be able to use hand tools (i.e torque wrench, drills and inspection tools).
  • Ability to read a tape measure, pressure gauge, level, and square.
  • Knowledge of basic computer skills and Microsoft Office programs.
  • This facility requires special access and therefore all candidates must be a US Citizen at least 18 years of age.
Desired Skills:
  • Production experience in a manufacturing environment and/or equivalent education or certification.
  • Specialized training in specific aspects of job functions and/or demonstrated ability to perform assigned tasks.

Requirements

Applicants must:
  1. High School Diploma or GED Equivalent.
  2. Not less than 18 years of age and must be able to prove age.
  3. Must be physically able to perform the work of the occupation with reasonable accommodations and without hazard to themselves or others. Applicants are requires to pass a hearing and vision test provided by the employer.
  4. Applicants are required to undergo drug testing at time of selection as an apprentice.
  5. Ability to work at heights, in confined spaces, and be fit for a respirator.
  6. Ability to read a tape measure, pressure gauge, level, and square.
  7. Ability to work in inclement weather.
  8. Knowledge of basic computer skills and Microsoft Office programs.
  9. Must be able to use hand tools (i.e torque wrench, drills and inspection tools.)
  10. Must be able to bend, squat and kneel frequently.
  11. Must be available to work all scheduled shifts.
  12. Must be able to lift 50lbs.
  13. Must be able to work in the United States.
