Job Summary
The Automation Engineering Manager leads and manages a team of engineers in the development, implementation, and optimization of automated systems and solutions within a manufacturing environment. This role oversees all aspects of automation projects, from initial concept and feasibility through design, validation, and successful deployment, ensuring alignment with organizational goals and compliance with industry standards and regulations. As part of our team, you will leverage your expertise in PLC and HMI programming, SCADA systems, and industrial networking. Experience working with automation integrators or in cross-functional automation projects is highly valued.
Primary Responsibilities
- Maintain strong working relationships with production supervisors, quality teams, and production employees.
- Regularly communicate technical activity status to program teams, leadership, and engineering peers within customer organizations.
- Report project status, challenges, and progress to senior leadership and key stakeholders.
- Drive deep scientific understanding, technical rigor, and best engineering practices in product and system development.
- Research emerging technologies, evaluate new tools, and integrate modern engineering solutions to enhance operations and minimize project risk.
- Provide technical guidance, review designs, and oversee prototyping activities to test innovative ideas.
- Interface with internal and external customers on technical issues, ensuring products and services meet customer requirements and expectations.
- Track and manage workloads, allocate resources efficiently, and manage budgets to ensure cost-effective use of tools, technology, and personnel.
- Ensure staff have the necessary equipment, processes, and safety protocols to perform their jobs effectively and hold direct reports accountable for following defined processes.
- Monitor key performance indicators such as team productivity, project milestones, and product performance to identify trends and drive improvements.
- Implement and refine engineering workflows, methodologies, and tools to enhance team efficiency and productivity.
- Conduct annual performance reviews, set objectives, and develop individual development plans for direct reports.
- Maintain and improve cleanliness of work areas.
- Provide technical leadership in the areas of automation and project engineering.
- Participate in customer interface activities to ensure products/services meet requirements and expectations.
- Track and manage engineering workloads, outsourcing work packages as needed to meet deadlines while optimizing resource use.
- Provide inputs for and review drawings to ensure tolerances, materials, and specifications meet requirements.
- Analyze data trends using statistical methods to guide process improvements and risk mitigation.
- Apply knowledge of engineering, chemistry, physics, and materials science to solve technical problems.
- Conduct scheduling and coordination of internal/external resources for project execution.
- Develop process documents (SOW, CERs, validation plans, MOC, SAT, FAT) to ensure successful project implementation.
- Ensure engineering projects meet industry standards, regulatory requirements, and customer expectations.
- Execute capital/contract projects to deliver on schedule, budget, and scope objectives.
- Monitor and report project status using tools like Microsoft Project, weekly reports, and Program Management Reviews.
- Oversee engineering projects from conception to completion, ensuring adherence to timelines, budgets, and quality standards.
- Manage the requirements lifecycle (creation, documentation, verification, validation) to align deliverables with stakeholder goals.
- Use Management of Change (MOC) processes to review engineering changes for safety, quality, and production impacts before implementation.
- Maintain the highest ethical standards, even when challenged with complex situations and multiple sometimes competing priorities.
- Understand and live by client’s ethics and business conduct policies

Qualifications
- Bachelor’s degree in automation, electrical engineering, mechanical engineering, computer science, mechatronics, or a related technical field required.
- Must be authorized to work in the U.S.
- To conform to U.S. export control regulations, applicant should be eligible for any required authorization from the U.S. Government.
- Due to special regulatory requirements for defense ammunition manufacturing, successful applicants will be required to pass a pre-employment background check and undergo initial and periodic substance abuse testing (urinalysis).
- 5 years of experience is required. Experience at an automation integrator or similar system integration company highly preferred.
- ISA/SCIA or OEM certifications a plus.
- Must be dependable, responsible, and accurate and have the ability to deal with people effectively.
- Strong oral and written presentation skills, and computer skills.
- Good financial aptitude.
- 4X10 work week with occasional overtime on Fridays or weekends as necessary, to meet program objectives.
- Up to 20% mostly US travel is required, normally a few multi-day trips per quarter.

Your Role: Director, Automation Engineering
This Director has the responsibility to provide leadership for Process Automation support and ownership of the Operational Technology systems at our Fort Dodge, Iowa site. This includes operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, project support, continuous improvement, and lifecycle management for all automation systems including DCSs, PLCs, and BMSs, as well as improvements related to compliance enhancement, risk reduction and efficiency increasement. The Role
We are seeking a highly skilled Staff Automation Engineer to drive the development and optimization of automation solutions that enhance developer productivity, improve software quality, and reduce technical debt. This role focuses on implementing scalable frameworks, advancing service-oriented architecture (SOA) practices, and enabling teams to achieve operational excellence through technical innovation. The ideal candidate is passionate about empowering developers, improving engineering efficiency, leveraging data-driven insights, and fostering a culture of continuous improvement.
Addepar takes a market-based approach to pay. A successful candidate’s starting pay will be determined based on the role, job-related skills, experience, qualifications, work location, and market conditions. The range displayed on each job posting reflects the minimum and maximum target base salary for roles in Colorado, California, and New York.
The current range for this role is $150 000 - 234,000 (base salary) + bonus + equity + benefits.

What You’ll Do
Technical Leadership and Innovation:
- Architect, develop, and maintain scalable automation frameworks and tools
- Lead technical efforts to support both developer enablement and quality assurance needs
- Provide expertise in designing and optimizing automation systems for maintainability, scalability, and performance
- Build and deploy automation solutions that streamline the SDLC, including tools for test data generation, environment setup, and deployment pipelines
- Integrate automation into CI/CD workflows to deliver rapid feedback and seamless deployments
- Drive the adoption of developer-first tools to minimize friction and accelerate development processes
- Implement and manage centralized software catalogs to improve discoverability, compliance, and reuse of automation tools and services
- Identify and address technical debt in automation frameworks and infrastructure
- Modernize legacy systems and align them with modern tools and methodologies
- Evaluate emerging technologies to continuously improve developer and quality enablement capabilities
- Define and implement robust test automation strategies to ensure reliable and consistent quality across releases
- Ensure comprehensive testing coverage, focusing on functional, integration, and end-to-end tests with an emphasis on SOA and microservices
- Track and improve delivery performance metrics, such as DORA metrics (deployment frequency, lead time for changes, change failure rate, and mean time to recovery)
- Partner with engineering, DevOps, and architecture teams to align automation strategies with organizational goals
- Collaborate on service integration testing, contract testing, and system-level quality initiatives
- Advocate for best practices and provide technical leadership in automation priorities across teams
- Proven experience as a technical leader in automation engineering or developer enablement
- Expertise in designing and implementing automation frameworks for SOA and microservices architectures
- Strong programming skills in languages such as Python, Java, or JavaScript, emphasizing maintainable and scalable code
- Hands-on experience with CI/CD pipelines, infrastructure-as-code (IaC), and build automation tools (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, Terraform)
- Deep understanding of service integration testing, contract testing, and system reliability testing
- Demonstrated success in improving DORA metrics across engineering teams
- Experience with cloud-native technologies and platforms (e.g., AWS)
- Familiarity with developer tooling and software cataloging tools and practices (e.g., Backstage, SonarQube, IDE plugin development)
- Expertise in pipeline technologies, including CI/CD orchestration, artifact management, and automated rollbacks (e.g., Jenkins, GitHub Actions, ArgoCD, Artifactory)
- Proficiency with build tools and dependency management systems (e.g., Maven, Gradle, Bazel, npm, Yarn)
- Experience with containerization and orchestration tools (e.g., Docker, Kubernetes)

Key Responsibilities:

Your Role: Director, Automation Engineering
This Director has the responsibility to provide leadership for Process Automation support and ownership of the Operational Technology systems at our Fort Dodge, Iowa site. This includes operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, project support, continuous improvement, and lifecycle management for all automation systems including DCSs, PLCs, and BMSs, as well as improvements related to compliance enhancement, risk reduction and efficiency increasement. Additionally, the director partners with other leaders to influence and implement improvements across functional disciplines to ensure that the site achieves all business plan objectives and remains compliant with all regulatory requirements including computer system validation.
Your Responsibilities:
- Operational Management: Oversees daily departmental activities, resource allocation, budget, and business plan. Manages headcount, overtime, and expenses. Collaborates with stakeholders and prioritizes tasks based on business goals, escalating issues as needed.
- Continuous Improvement: Drives automation value improvement by leveraging best practices, leading computer system validation, and utilizing data-driven problem-solving. Actively participates in site operations to identify and implement automation solutions.
- People Development: Fosters employee growth through performance management plans aligned with individual, departmental, and site goals. Provides coaching, mentoring, and career counseling, and manages performance reviews and related documentation. Develops succession plans.
- Collaboration and Alignment: Works closely with Global Engineering to align with corporate initiatives, standards, and policies. Partners with Human Resources on personnel matters.
- Safety Leadership: Cultivates a strong safety culture by promoting awareness, accountability, proactive risk reduction, and timely incident reporting. Ensures safety is integrated into all automation tasks.
- Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field.
- Minimum 5 year's experience within a regulated industry.
- Knowledge of automation systems and equipment Commissioning and Qualification processes and knowledge of cGMP’s and guidelines.
- Proven experience leading teams focused on front-line support as well as strategic plan.
- Experience working within the animal health or pharmaceutical industry.
- Exposure to Lean Six Sigma principles.
- Knowledge of the principles and guidelines of CFR 9 and the USDA.
