About the Role

As an Automation Engineering Technician, you will focus on equipment troubleshooting and maintaining material handling equipment (MHE) such as conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, print and apply labeling systems, scales, HMI systems, PLCs and control cabinets. You will work in mentorship under Automation Engineers and Sr Automation Engineers and part of the Reliability and Maintenance Engineering site team. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

  • Promote a safe working environment by following all safety procedures
  • Maintain material handling control systems, industrial, motor control systems, servo and frequency drives, and electrical distribution systems
  • Monitor Material Handling Equipment (MHE) metrics and partner with Automation Engineers and Maintenance Technicians to resolve equipment problems that create performance deficiencies
  • Improve material handling system reliability through preventive maintenance tasks completion and identification and execution of corrective repairs
  • Perform basic data analytics to support system/equipment deep dives and improvements
  • Escalate/Engage network support resources for guidance and assistance to restore equipment back to operational mode with minimal downtime impact for Operations
  • Communicate technical issues to RME and Operations Leadership
  • Travel up to 20% at a minimum.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS
  • Work a flexible schedule/shift/work area, including weekends, nights, and/or holidays
  • Work various shifts as assigned, including the possibility of nights
  • Experience with PLC-controlled automation and issue diagnosis in a continuous process or production environment.
  • Experience with robotics work cells and its control systems
  • Experience with Ladder Logic and structure programming from Siemens, Allen-Bradley , or Codesys PLCs
  • Experience acting in a team lead capacity that supports, trains, and mentors less experienced automation engineering professionals
  • Advanced proficiency in verbal and written English
  • Experience with electrical theory, robotics, controls components, automated equipment
  • Ability to interpret and understand policies and procedures and relate them to others.
  • Experience with a Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS)
  • Continuous improvement mindset
  • Willingness to learn and grow within RME Problem-solving mindset for debugging systems.

  • 2+ years of experience of industrial electrical hands-on experience and troubleshooting, including 480V 3-phase, 110 VAC, and 24VDC systems
  • 2+ years of experience interpreting, modifying, and developing mechanical and electrical drawings

Your Role: Director, Automation Engineering

This Director has the responsibility to provide leadership for Process Automation support and ownership of the Operational Technology systems at our Fort Dodge, Iowa site. This includes operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, project support, continuous improvement, and lifecycle management for all automation systems including DCSs, PLCs, and BMSs, as well as improvements related to compliance enhancement, risk reduction and efficiency increasement. Additionally, the director partners with other leaders to influence and implement improvements across functional disciplines to ensure that the site achieves all business plan objectives and remains compliant with all regulatory requirements including computer system validation.

Your Responsibilities:
  • Operational Management: Oversees daily departmental activities, resource allocation, budget, and business plan. Manages headcount, overtime, and expenses. Collaborates with stakeholders and prioritizes tasks based on business goals, escalating issues as needed.
  • Continuous Improvement: Drives automation value improvement by leveraging best practices, leading computer system validation, and utilizing data-driven problem-solving. Actively participates in site operations to identify and implement automation solutions.
  • People Development: Fosters employee growth through performance management plans aligned with individual, departmental, and site goals. Provides coaching, mentoring, and career counseling, and manages performance reviews and related documentation. Develops succession plans.
  • Collaboration and Alignment: Works closely with Global Engineering to align with corporate initiatives, standards, and policies. Partners with Human Resources on personnel matters.
  • Safety Leadership: Cultivates a strong safety culture by promoting awareness, accountability, proactive risk reduction, and timely incident reporting. Ensures safety is integrated into all automation tasks.
What You Need to Succeed (minimum qualifications):
  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering or related field.
  • Minimum 5 year's experience within a regulated industry.
  • Knowledge of automation systems and equipment Commissioning and Qualification processes and knowledge of cGMP's and guidelines.
  • Proven experience leading teams focused on front-line support as well as strategic plan.
What You Need to Succeed (preferred qualifications):
  • Experience working within the animal health or pharmaceutical industry.
  • Exposure to Lean Six Sigma principles.
  • Knowledge of the principles and guidelines of CFR 9 and the USDA.

About the Role

As an Automation Engineering Technician, you will focus on equipment troubleshooting and maintaining material handling equipment (MHE) such as conveyors, sortation systems, scanners, cameras, print and apply labeling systems, scales, HMI systems, PLCs and control cabinets. Overview
Are you a skilled Automation Engineering Technician looking to take your career to the next level in a dynamic and high-tech environment? We are seeking an experienced technician to support the production of cutting-edge medical technologies that improve patient care globally. In this role, you'll troubleshoot advanced automated systems, drive continuous improvement initiatives, and work with state-of-the-art equipment, all while collaborating with engineers and a passionate team.
Responsibilities
+ Advanced Troubleshooting (40%)
Provide expert troubleshooting for automated manufacturing equipment, including mechanical, electrical, pneumatic, hydraulic, and control systems. Use PLC ladder logic to resolve machine control issues and ensure minimal downtime.
+ Process Optimization & Project Support (30%)
Partner with engineering to execute process validations and help develop solutions that improve overall equipment efficiency (OEE). You'll also contribute to design reviews, URS, PFMEAs, and testing during new automation projects.
+ Preventive Maintenance & Data Analysis (30%)
Conduct preventive maintenance on automated systems and monitor machine data to identify trends, proactively solve problems, and optimize production performance. This is your chance to make a real impact on process improvements and reduce maintenance costs.
Qualifications
+ 2-4 years in a technical role (preferably in automation or high-speed systems).
+ Experience with RF welding applications, cam automation, or GMP-regulated environments is a plus.
+ Hands-on experience with PLC programming (Allen Bradley or Siemens), Vision systems (Cognex), and networking (Ethernet, DeviceNet, DH485, etc.).
+ Proficient in troubleshooting mechanical, electrical, hydraulic, and pneumatic systems.
+ Experience with 3D modeling software (SolidWorks/Solid Edge) for equipment design.
+ Ability to perform root cause analysis and implement improvements.
+ Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and work in a cleanroom environment.
+ Two-year technical degree or equivalent education/experience in an automation or technical role.
