We’re hiring a Kitchen Manager to lead daily operations of our growing bakery team. This is a role for someone who thrives on organization, details, team leadership, and operational excellence. You’ll ensure that production across our three verticals—farmer's markets, wholesale, and e-commerce—runs smoothly, efficiently, and in compliance with all food safety standards.

Who You Are:

4+ years experience in a kitchen or food production leadership role, managing a team
experience with baking, understands how a bakery/commissary functions
A pro at systems, spreadsheets, and kitchen organization
Calm under pressure and an excellent communicator
Passionate about local food and clean ingredient sourcing
Food handler’s certification required
Punctual, reliable, with good problem solving skills, and can work well with others.
Ability to weigh, mix and bake products based on recipes and kitchen standards
Open to learning new techniques, such as vegan baking and wild fermentation
Attention to detail, thoughtful and organized in your work
Comfortable with working for 8+ hours, standing, lifting up to 50#, portioning and weighing doughs

What You’ll Do:

Supervise bakery team, manage staff and train/hire accordingly.
Manage inventory, place orders, and maintain vendor relationships
Track food and labor costs, minimize waste, and improve margins
Maintain Dept of Agriculture standards and standardize/organize kitchen
Oversee production scheduling for staff weekly as well as quarterly.
Organize the production calendar, especially around holiday times

Hours are Mon-Friday, 6-2; we offer daily staff lunch and breads/treats to take home weekly. Hours will increase at peak holiday times and may include weekends

Hourly Pay & Benefit Details

The hourly rate (salary) for this position ranges from $17.25___to $27.61___ per hour; starting rate will vary based on circumstances, including experience, qualifications, location and the terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement.  Dependent on length of service and hours worked, benefits include healthcare, sick pay, PTO/Vacation pay and retirement benefits (pension and/or 401k eligibility).

Summary

The Bakery Manager will take full responsibility for the operation of the Bakery Department. Responsibility is defined as but not limited to: operations, planning, directing, managing, and achieving targeted profits. In addition, the Bakery Manager is directly responsible for staff development. The individual must cultivate a solid working relationship between himself/herself and his/her staff. Developing and instilling positive morale is the key to success of the Bakery Department. The Bakery Manager must also cultivate a working relationship with other department managers to cross-merchandise effectively.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

Include the following (other duties may be assigned):

  • Leads by example; models correct behavior and adherence to company policies and procedures
  • Responsible for using the tools provided by management to ensure the success of the department
  • Maintains the appropriate profit margin in accordance to the approved pre-set budget, which entails, but is not limited to: sales goals, cost of goods, expenses, price changes and waste management
  • Responsible for implementing and maintaining all marketing programs
  • Manages and assures the proper displaying and selling of all bakery products and advises customers on quality of food, method of handling, and other factors affecting preparing, freezing, and storing food
  • Responsible for working with the other department to ensure successful demos
  • Prepares the weekly and daily work schedules and directs the activities of employees working in the Bakery Department
  • Responsible for schedule writing that is done fairly and objectively
  • Manages cost control by managing labor, including overtime, and controlling supply costs
  • Maintains the Bakery Department under current California Weights & Measures mandates, and trains all employees on the use of proper tares and accurate weights
  • Packages, displays, and merchandises all bakery goods according to company standards
  • Maintains current health codes and company standards regarding sanitation and cleanliness
  • Understands proper usage of all authorized cleaning chemicals in the Bakery Department
  • Follows the "FIFO"rotation system (first-in, first-out) to maintain freshness of product and reduce shrink
  • Covers, labels, and dates all leftover products; utilizes leftover products before opening new product
  • Inspects items during baking processes, including measuring temperatures throughout process to maintain quality and sanitation
  • Inspects finished bakery products to ensure Bristol Farms standards of quality, weight specifications, & presentation
  • Follows safety work standards and reports any safety hazards to the Store Director
  • Conducts accident investigations and completes paperwork in accordance with Cal Osha SAB-198
  • Maintains bakery cases focusing on sanitation, cleanliness, and keeping correct temperature requirements
  • Arranges for maintenance and repair of equipment
  • Is responsible for the training and overall development of employees working in the Bakery Department
  • Responsible for consistent practices among all department employees
  • Ensures proper training on weighing, slicing, cutting, and serving of bakery goods
  • Trains employees on all opening and closing procedures
  • Ensures proper documentation of training
  • Documents all meetings/memos/monthly safety training and collects employee signatures as required
  • Engages and coaches bakery employees in suggestive selling techniques
  • Responsible for communication with all Bakery Department employees including the use of the Bakery Log Book, the Weekly Training Topics, monthly Safety Training, and the information contained in the Weekly Bulletin
  • Responsible for communication with the Store Director on all bakery related issues
  • Examines products bought for resale or received for storage for freshness & quality
  • Helps breakdown and store products received
  • Serves customers with a smile and a willing attitude
  • Handles customer complaints in such a manner to assure customer satisfaction
  • Follows & enforces policies and procedures set forth in the employee handbook at all times, especially on service standards and appearance

Supervisory Responsibilities

The Bakery Manager is responsible for the overall direction, coordination, and evaluation of the Bakery department. He or she carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with Bristol Farms policies and all applicable laws. Responsibilities include interviewing; training & developing employees; scheduling, planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Customer Service Skills

The Bakery Manager is expected to provide customer service that is extra ordinary and exceeds the expectations of our customers. They are required to follow established policies and guidelines that go beyond simply smiling and greeting customers. Going above and beyond encompasses attitudes, respect, and flexibility. The Bakery Manager is expected to have a positive "can-do" attitude; to treat others with respect; and easily adjust to changes in the workplace.

Education and/or Experience

High School diploma or general education degree (GED); college degree preferred; two to three years related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills

Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively before groups of customers, or employees of Bristol Farms.

Knowledge of English

This is a customer service driven position. The candidate must have the ability to speak, read and understand English.

Mathematical Skills

Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, proportions, percentages, and volume. Ability to add, subtract, divide, and multiply using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.

Reasoning Ability

Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form. Ability to resolve conflicts in such a manner to create a win-win situation. Ability to analyze a variety of situations, think through to a solution and implement the solution.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job, the employee is regularly required to stand for long periods of time; walk; frequent use of hands; hands to finger; handle, or feel objects, tools, or controls. The employee occasionally is required to reach with hands and arms. The employee is occasionally required to climb or balance and stoop, kneel, crouch, or crawl. The employee must frequently lift and /or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close and color vision.

Work Environment

While performing the duties of this job, the employee regularly works near moving mechanical parts. The employee is occasionally exposed to extreme heat and/or cold, to electrical shock, and to risk of burn. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate and occasionally loud.

Job Description

Key Responsibilities & Accountabilities:

* Champions corporate and division customer service programs to meet or exceed division customer service goals.
* Plans, organizes and directs day-to-day operations of the Bakery Department, exercising independent judgment and discretion. Conducts daily inspections of all Bakery department sections and initiates corrective measures to ensure compliance with product quality, code date standards, sanitation, safety and security requirements.
* Oversees and assists with all bakery department duties such as: proofing, baking, decorating, slicing and packaging fresh bakery products.
* Implements effective promotional and seasonal displays. Prevents shrink and controls expenses. Accurately completes maintains and monitor daily log sheet, purchase report, and sales and labor and other required paperwork and logs. Maintain records on ad item movement.
* Orders, checks, receives and controls inventory to ensure adequate product quantity, quality and freshness and maintains inventory levels according to Division directives. Stocks and rotates product. Maintains and organizes bakery department cooler and freezer. Conducts periodic inventories, processes administrative paperwork and maintains accurate department records.
* Ensures that bakery product quality, baking and decorating standards are met.
* Ensures proper merchandising of product by understanding and implementing schematics, merchandising of advertised items, proper signing procedures and monitoring product flow. Complies with retail labeling laws, federal and state regulations and Company policies.
* Follows Company policy in handling quick sale items. Complies with all federal, state and local health and food safety standards.
* Assists customers by taking and filling special orders. Makes product suggestions and engages in suggestive selling. Makes intercom announcements.
* Ensures cleanliness and sanitation of sales floor and work area, freezer and cooler, equipment, and retail cases.
* Handles customer relations. Engages in suggestive selling and other sales techniques.
* Monitors daily log sheet, purchase report and sales and labor report.
* Attends required training and sales meetings.
* Implements emergency procedures in the event of equipment and computer software malfunctions.
* Supervises, motivates, directs, trains and participates in the hiring of Bakery Department personnel. Monitors associate performance and effectively recommends personnel action to store director such as hiring, firing, layoff and disciplinary action. Identifies and trains associates with high potential for advancement opportunities. Schedules personnel to ensure adequate coverage and service levels.
* Communicates sales goals, department performance and sales opportunities to department associates to ensure positive results.
* Complies with and ensures compliance with all Company policies and procedures.
* Resolves associate complaints where appropriate and reports action taken to Store Director. Immediately reports any potential serious policy violations, for matters including but not limited to working off the clock, harassment, food safety and sanitation, discrimination etc. to the Store Director and assists in appropriate handling. Identifies and trains associates with high potential for advancement opportunities.
* Answers and responds to incoming calls appropriately. Receive and appropriately resolves customer complaints and reports to the Store Director as appropriate.
* Attends required training and sales meetings.
* Responsible for performing all job duties with honesty and integrity and in compliance with Company policies and procedures.

Skills and Physical Requirements:

* Requires working knowledge of all job duties including Cake Decorator, Baker, and Sales Associate, and performs those job duties as required.
* Requires strong communication skills, good leadership and interpersonal skills, the proven ability to manage people, and the ability to maintain professional demeanor in dealing with customers and co-workers.
* Must have knowledge of product variety, bakery standards, perishability, food safety, safety and sanitation procedures and department policies and procedures.
* Operates computer software and electronic ordering devices to order and label product, plan sales, inventory and scheduling.
* Requires a good understanding of overall Company practices and Bakery Department policies and procedures. Requires the ability to judge and react to business activity.
* Must frequently reach, lift and maneuver objects of varying dimensions and weights up to approximately 40 pounds. Pushes and pulls fully loaded hand trucks and pallet jacks. Performs repetitious arm movement required to decorate, prepare and package product.
* Must stand for long periods of time, walk, bend, stoop, twist and turn frequently and occasionally climb ladders. Manual dexterity and good eye-hand coordination are necessary. Must operate related equipment such as: oven, mixers, microwave oven, bread slicer, scales and proof boxes. Uses work aids such as knives, scrapers and decorating tools. Must use trash compactor and baler.
* Mental alertness is necessary to ensure safe and accurate completion of work activities.
* Requires knowledge of basic math and weights and measures.
* Requires strong communication skills, good leadership and interpersonal skills, the proven ability to manage people and maximize productivity. Must maintain professional demeanor in dealing with customers, vendors and co-workers.
* Requires basic knowledge of employment laws and workplace practices.
* Must have extensive working knowledge of profit and loss statements.
* Operates computer software and electronic ordering devices to order product, plan sales, inventory and scheduling.
* Requires the ability to judge and react to business activity.
* Complies with and ensure compliance with Company grooming standards and dress code.
* Utilizes cleaning supplies, including chemicals, and equipment. Hands are frequently exposed to water and cleaning agents. Requires use of plastic or latex gloves.
* Occasional travel, including overnight travel, may be required. May be required to work nights, weekends and holidays. Scheduled hours will vary. Good attendance is required.

Work Environment:

* Working conditions consist of a temperature controlled store environment. Frequent exposure to 400° F while baking products. Frequent exposure to -20° F while handling products in freezer.
* Frequent exposure to flour dust.
* Hands are frequently exposed to water and cleaning agents. Use of plastic or latex gloves.

Union and Non-Union: "The pay range is $27.40 per hour, but no less than the local minimum wage. Starting rates will vary based on things like location, experience, qualifications and the terms of any applicable collective bargaining agreement. Dependent on length of service, hours worked and any applicable collective bargaining agreement, benefits include medical, dental, vision, disability and life insurance, sick pay (accrued based on hours worked), PTO/Vacation pay (accrued based on hours worked), paid holidays (9 days annually), bereavement pay, and retirement benefits (pension and/or 401k eligibility)."
