About You

Responsibilities
  • Lead a multi-disciplined engineering team in the development of new battery projects from design concept, detailed design, design verification, build, and delivery to the customer site.
  • Manage and integrate contractors into the development team to meet deadlines and ensure team cohesiveness
  • Lead the team through problem identification and resolution
  • Drive technical requirements creation, review and tracking
  • Track design progress against short and long term cost targets
  • Technical review and approval of the design technical data package (TDP) elements

Qualifications Required
  • 10+ years experience in developing and launching new products integrating electrical and mechanical systems incorporating fluid or gas flow. Proven ability to prepare and formally present concepts, progress and status of projects to executive management and customers
  • Excellent problem solving with demonstrated experience in guiding root cause analysis
  • Excellent organizational skills
  • Solid understanding of engineering life cycle and methodologies

Position Overview

This position as part of the Test Engineering organization will provide comprehensive test engineering support to Proterra's Battery Engineering team and Proterra Technology Lab. * Own all aspects of the technology stack of the Proterra Technology Lab including HV battery firmware, test station architecture, and automation.
* Collaborate with the BMS and Embedded Systems team to understand firmware updates, report test anomalies, and drive countermeasure implementation.
* Provide clear and concise documentation related to tests, including reports on parts under test and their status.
* Capture identified failures in detail and work with engineering to facilitate resolution.
* Take ownership of failure analysis process by providing detailed information surrounding failures in test articles.
* Design, implement, and document new electro-mechanical test fixtures, data acquisition, and automation scripts.
* Build LabVIEW programs to log data, communicate with test articles, and process complex sets of data.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Battery system design optimization through Multiphysics simulations
  • Thermal modeling of battery packs/modules/cells (Cooling/Heating, Air/Liquid/PCM)
  • Numerical modeling of battery packs/modules/cells (ECM, ROM, MSMD)
  • Help guide experimental validation and testing from simulation results
  • Define battery system performance specifications through simulation results
  • Thermal management simulation and analysis of a charging station and charging rack of a battery pack.
  • Automation of simulation process and procedure documentation.

REQUIREMENTS:

  • Minimum of 3 years industrial work experience with Multiphysics simulations
  • Strong technical background in working with mechanical/thermal/electrical systems
  • Masters degree in mechanical engineering, chemical engineering, physics, chemistry, or electrical engineering, PhD preferred
  • Experience with 3D simulation software: Ansys suite (Mechanical, CFD, LS-dyna, EM), Star-CCM+, COMSOL multiphysics, etc.

BONUS SKILLS:

  • Experience running simulation cases in a multi-core cluster environment (HPC)

+ Ensure battery pack manufacturing equipment and processes are within compliance and operate efficiently.
+ Analyze, develop, and improve battery pack manufacturing equipment, processes, standards, and strategies.
+ Provide detailed battery pack design for manufacture (DFM) advice to R&D and lead implementation of battery design and process changes in assembly.
+ Work with R&D to optimize battery pack design and production.
+ Drive or provide input for new production equipment justification and implementation for battery manufacturing.
