A Behavioral Interventionist can range from a Registered Behavior Technician, Intervention Specialist and a Intervention Professional. Depending on the level of education that has been acquired in a Human Services field you could qualify for one of these levels of provider. Additional training is provided! Your primary responsibilities revolve around implementing the ABA therapy plans designed by Board Certified Behavior Analysts (BCBAs) and Clinical staff. Will work directly with clients to foster skills in communication, social interaction, and self-care, while also managing challenging behaviors.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Applying ABA therapy techniques as directed by the supervising BCBA

Collecting data on client behavior and progress (to include data sheets and inputting for electronic billing)

Serves as a primary point of contact for program needs in need of behavioral health consultation. Completes behavioral assessments, related Behavior Support Plans, and other behavioral interventions as needed. Provides training, modeling, and coaching to stakeholders in the implementation of behavioral interventions. Monitors & measures outcomes of interventions both new and existing, and revises/implements planning, data collection and training approaches as needed to facilitate positive outcomes.

Essential Functions / Responsibilities:

  • Collaboration with treatment/support teams and stakeholders to maximize multi-disciplinary & person-centered approaches, and positive outcomes.
  • Devises behavioral tracking / outcome measures to illustrate the impact of interventions. Revises MMP/BSP and training approaches as needed to improve outcomes, including annotations and addendums as communicated by program team.
  • Conduct Functional Behavior Assessments, and other assessments as needed to inform Behavior Support Plan and/or services development
  • Develops and/or revises Behavior Support Plans (BSPs) or provides alternate clinical recommendations per assessment findings
  • Completes semi-annual review of data for existing planning of individuals assigned.
  • Completes monthly review of available data for individuals assigned. Communicates any concerns to program team for follow up.
  • Training, modeling, and coaching of stakeholders in the implementation of BSPs
  • Maintains clinical record and documentation
  • Meets quality and productivity standards as assigned
  • Active participation in agency committees and initiatives as assigned
  • Complies with all agency policies and procedures

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Master's degree in social work, a clinical or treatment field of psychology, applied psychology, or school psychology; OR
  • A National Board certification in behavior analysis (BCBA) and a Master's degree in behavior analysis, or a field closely related to clinical or community psychology; OR
  • A New York State license in mental health counseling;
  • Valid New York State Drivers License that meets agency policy
  • Ability to meet physical requirements of the position when performing the following: standing, walking, sitting, bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling and climbing.

DUTIES

Behavioral Intervention Specialists help clients (ages 3-21) acquire and demonstrate everyday skills to lead a more independent life. Most clients are children; however, the age groups can fluctuate. Proficiencies being coached in this position may include but are not limited to social skills, how to communicate wants and needs, personal care needs (e.g., hygiene, toileting), and how to appropriately and effectively interact with others. Most therapy is conducted off-site including at the client's home, in social settings, and/or in various other community locations. The majority of sessions are conducted one-on-one and requires a great deal of time, persistence, and patience.

THE PROGRAM

The Vista Hill Learning Assistance Center Program and Mental Health Contracts Program are teams of therapists, behavioral rehabilitation staff, and psychiatrists who provide comprehensive treatment and work in a seamless and integrated manner at school locations with teachers, school counselors and administrators. Clinical staff address school related issues and help students succeed with academics, social interactions, and improve family relationships.

THE POSITION

The Behavioral Health Intervention Specialist is a mental health professional who works under the supervision of the Program Manager and coordinates clinical care with the program therapist. The Mental Health Rehabilitation Specialist provides linkage and consultation as well as direct services to a caseload of clients. The primary focus areas of direct service include case management, resource support, behavioral intervention plan development and implementation. Examples of tasks include:
  • Conducts child/youth and family focused, strength-based assessments, within the context of a local school/home/community service plan.
  • Develops client plan goals and objectives, in coordination with the therapist, to address the client's needs for rehabilitation and case management services, while developing an appropriate transition plan.

REQUIREMENTS
  • Experience working in a special education setting/classroom preferred.
  • AA degree in Psychology, Social Work or related field, plus 4 years' experience, OR BA and 2 years' experience.

POSITION DUTIES:

  • In conjunction with the IDT identifies behaviors and/or mental health issues of the individuals we serve that deviate enough from normative behavior as to need care.
  • Oversees the collection of baseline data to be used to develop behavior support plans of monitoring plans.
  • In conjunction with the IDT, completes a functional behavioral assessment prior to developing a behavior support plan.
  • Writes behavior support plans and monitoring plans and revises them at least annually. Establishes both proactive and reactive data collection methods and reviews data at least monthly. Behavioral support plans will be developed as follows:
    a. Level 1 BIS may develop behavior support plans or services that do not include restrictive/intrusive interventions.
    b. Level 2 BIS may develop behavior support plans or services that do not include restrictive/intrusive interventions under the Supervision of a Level 1 BIS.
  • Any behavior support plans or services which utilize restrictive/intrusive interventions must be developed under the supervision of a licensed psychologist or licensed clinical social worker.
  • Formally trains multi-level staff in the implementation of behavior support plans and monitoring plans and in general approaches in managing challenging behaviors and mental health issues.
  • Debriefs with staff after major behavior events.
  • Spends time in their programs with the people we support based on program need. Ideally meeting on a weekly basis. BIS is responsible for balancing the needs of their caseloads.
  • Makes referrals for psychiatric care, psychological evaluations and counseling services as indicated. Writes clinic visit summaries for these appointments and attends psychiatric appointments when needed.
  • Acts as a liaison mental health services/behavioral problems between and among IDT members, clinics, psychiatrists, hospitals day programs, families, and concerned others.
  • Obtains informed consents for psychotropic medications and restrictive behavior support plans.
  • Presents psychotropic medications and restrictive behavior plans to the Human Rights Committee for approval.
  • Prepares all required written reports and documentations in a timely manner. Maintains these reports and documents in an organized manner in the appropriate sections of the individuals' record.
  • Participates in meetings including, but not limited to Life Plan, Day Programs, Departmental, Psychotropic Medication Regimen Review, and Special Team meetings. Attends supervision meetings as requested.
  • Conducts interviews with the individuals we serve during investigations. Provides written reports of these investigations in a timely manner.
  • Demonstrates an ability to work effectively with the individuals we serve. Provides supportive counseling as indicated. Documents each of these sessions.
  • Maintains current certification in SCIP or PROMOTE. Becomes a certified trainer in SCIP/PROMOTE, and teaches classes for the agency.
  • Performs all other duties as assigned.
REQUIREMENTS:
  • LEVEL 1 BIS: Master's degree in a clinical and/or treatment field of psychology and documented training in assessment techniques and behavior support development, and at least five (5) years experience working directly with individuals with developmental disabilities.
  • LEVEL 2 BIS: Master's degree in clinical or community psychology, or related treatment degrees, certifications, or licensure approved by Office of People with Developmental Disabilities (OPWDD). Schedule: Monday - Friday, 8:30am to 5pm (flexible)

Pay: $60,000 to $2,500 per year

Responsibilities of the Behavioral Intervention Specialist:

· Working as the psychology staff serving adults with a wide variety of developmental and intellectual disabilities.

· Responsible for oversight of all psychological and behavioral issues and matters within the residence and/or day program.

· Assist the team in developing the most appropriate plan to meet the program participants' developmental and emotional needs.

· Required to perform functional behavioral analysis as needed, data collection, development of behavior support/monitoring plans and staff guidelines for individuals with behavioral and emotional challenges.

· Act as a liaison between community psychiatrist and residence or program. Perform crisis intervention and be available for emergency calls.

· Responsible to work cooperatively and collaborate with residential and program management and staff.

· Provide in-services and training to staff on psychological topics and interest areas.

· Performs initial, semiannual and annual functional behavioral assessments of individuals and provides written recommendations to corresponding program staff.

· Develops, reviews, and revises written behavior support plans.

· Develops, reviews, and revises written behavior medication monitoring plans.

· Helps to ensure the integration, consistency and appropriateness of plans.

· Trains staff on how to implement the plans.

· Provides training to staff in managing difficult behaviors and assists with crisis intervention.

· Documents individual's progress/regress and ensures completion of all record keeping tasks as per agency/program policies and procedures.

Qualifications for the Behavioral Intervention Specialist:

· Must have a Master's degree in a clinical or treatment field in psychology, social work, school psychology or a related human services field - new grads welcome!

· BCBA certified, preferred

JOB DESCRIPTION

CP Unlimited is seeking a BIS to assure the mental health and behavioral needs of people with intellectual and developmental disabilities that are attending our program are met. The Behavioral Intervention Specialist (BIS) is responsible for the functional behavioral assessments and behavior support plans.

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Developing functional behavioral assessments and support plans using baseline data and ongoing proactive and reactive data.

  • Providing individual and group counseling.

  • Presenting psychotropic medications and restrictive behavior support plans to the Human Rights Committee.

  • Training multi-level staff in the implementation and monitoring of behavior support plans.

  • Providing referrals for psychiatric care, psychological evaluations and counseling services.

  • Act as a liaison for mental health services/behavioral problems between and among IDT members, clinics, psychiatrists, hospitals, day programs, and families.

  • Maintaining current certification and becoming a certified trainer in SCIP or PROMOTE.

REQUIREMENTS

• Master's degree in a clinical and/or treatment field of psychology and documented training in assessment techniques and behavior support development.• At least five years experience working directly with MRDD individuals (BCBA certification a plus).• Ability to travel and access multiple locations throughout the Hudson Valley and the ability to work flexible hours to include possible overnight and weekends.• Ability to provide on-call behavioral service coverage via cell phone.
