**Responsibilities**
The lab of Paul Tang, MD, PhD is seeking motivated, creative, and enthusiastic candidates to join us in researching the biology of donor heart preservation and cardiovascular aging which includes the study of cell biology, metabolism, and liquid-liquid phase separation with molecular condensate formation. We seek a lab technician who will be responsible for management of mice colonies as well as small and large animal surgeries/experiments such as ex-vivo heart perfusion and heart transplantation. Skill set in common lab techniques such as immunohistochemistry, western blots and PCR are also desired. Our lab is a dynamic group with a goal is to make seminal discoveries in organ preservation biology and cardiovascular aging as well as translate cutting-edge science to clinical practice. Our lab has ample opportunities to develop valuable scientific skillsets and make novel discoveries in cardiovascular science. Research in the lab receives funding from multiple external grants including the NIH (R01), American Heart Association, industry partners, Professional Society Foundations, and clinical trials.
Examples of areas of research include:
1. Study of molecular phase separation events in determining cardiac preservation quality
2. Impact of chromatin structure on the biology of aging hearts and susceptibility to ischemia
3. Study of plasma membrane processes that endow cardioprotective properties during ischemia-reperfusion
4. Drug therapeutics to improve cardiac resilience to ischemic injury

Primary tasks:
Set up and performs routine and established lab procedures in support of lab goals, grant commitments, i.e., assays, cell/tissue culture, animal studies, etc. Monitor results, report unusual outcomes, and suggest modifications. Collect, enter, and summarize data. Assist in the maintenance of lab equipment and supplies. Perform basic statistical data analysis; prepare tables/charts/graphs and assist in organizing data. Present at research laboratory meetings and contribute to writing of manuscripts. Work under supervision and may perform some assignments independently as discussed and approved by Principal Investigator.
**Qualifications**
Requires bachelor's degree in biology, chemistry, other relevant science, or an associate's degree with 6 years of relevant laboratory experience. Must exhibit a solid understanding of lab techniques, equipment, and safety. Must have the ability to organize and carry out laboratory techniques independently and in a team setting. Experience with basic data analysis is required. This position requires demonstrated writing skills.

The positions will be part of a cutting-edge a Mass Spectrometry Facility team and requires the ability to participate in multi-disciplinary research in a collaborative setting. The MSF provides fee-for-service access to advanced technologies for proteomics, macromolecular, small molecule, and metabolomics acquisition via MS and LC/MS/MS ( purpose of this position is to assist in the preparation and analysis of samples submitted to the Mass Spectrometry Core Facility (MSF) at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB). We are looking for curious and motivated individuals with strong backgrounds in sample preparation methods for proteins and/or proteomics Research Scientist II position; candidates with a Ph.D are preferred but BS and MS will be considered based upon practical experience. The position will be part of a high-energy, cutting-edge Mass Spectrometry Core Facility team.
The incumbent in this position will be primarily responsible for preparing samples from a variety of complex biological sources, quality control of sample preparation, and routine maintenance of several HPLC systems. The position will require performing sample preparation of proteins and/or small molecules from biological matrices (cells, tissues, serum, etc.) prior to MS analysis. Strong oral and written communication skills are required. In addition, the incumbent is required to keep a detailed laboratory notebook, contribute to general orderliness of the laboratory and support lab health and safety compliance. The incumbent will be required to write a variety of technical and/or project reports as well as document newly developed methods.
**_MAJOR DUTIES / CRITICAL TASKS_** **_:_**

**Desired, but not required, skills:**

Responsibilities

The Department of Pediatrics at Cedars-Sinai Guerin Children's, the Cedars-Sinai Health System health initiative, is seeking a junior Research Scientist to join a new Center specializing in Developmental and Stem Cell Biology. The Center focuses on understanding fundamental principles of development and regeneration using both animal models and human tissue, and it is a central element of the growth of Guerin Children's. Faculty within the Center will work in close partnership with the Regenerative Medicine Institute, Departments of Computational Biomedicine and Biomedical Sciences, and other relevant units on campus. We are interested in basic research scientists and clinician-scientists who work in the following areas: early embryogenesis, organogenesis, tissue stem cell biology, and adult regeneration.

Job Description

The University of Maryland School of Medicine (UMSOM), Medicine Institute for Neuroscience Discovery (UM-MIND) is currently recruiting a Laboratory Research Manager. The incumbent will contribute to the academic and research mission of the Head Laboratory by conducting high-impact, peer-reviewed research. The primary focus is to investigate the molecular and cellular mechanisms underlying normal synaptic function and to elucidate how synaptic dysfunction contributes to neurological disorders-particularly Parkinson's disease. A central component of this work involves the use of cutting-edge gene-editing strategies, including CRISPR-based technologies.

The incumbent will take a leadership role in the design and execution of experimental approaches for key laboratory projects. Responsibilities include performing background research, developing and optimizing protocols, troubleshooting experimental challenges, analyzing data, and preparing manuscripts for publication. The role requires proficiency in a broad range of molecular and cellular biology techniques, including (but not limited to) confocal immunofluorescence imaging, immunohistochemistry, flow cytometry (FACS), ELISA, Western blotting, PCR, RT-qPCR, and CRISPR-based gene editing. A strong foundation in biochemistry, molecular biology, cell biology, genetics, and histology are essential. Experience with culturing and differentiating human induced pluripotent stem cells (iPSCs), maintaining primary rodent neuronal cultures, and working with mouse models is highly desirable.

In addition, the incumbent will independently interpret experimental results, draft and submit protocols, and manage procurement of supplies and equipment to ensure smooth research operations. The role also involves mentoring and supervising junior laboratory members, including technicians and graduate students, as well as assisting in the onboarding and training of new hires. Additional duties may be assigned as needed to support the laboratory's evolving goals.

Primary Duties:
  • Responsible for managing the operations of a research laboratory and providing administrative and technical support to the research activities. This position is responsible for ensuring design, development, documentation and implementation of research procedures and protocols using a variety of complex activities.
  • Manage laboratory staff including training, scheduling, coordinating, and delegating work, monitoring and evaluating performance to promote maximum staff member benefit and effectiveness as well as overall functional productivity.
  • Manage the development and execution of research studies. Revises studies, in consultation with upper management or principal investigator, to meet changing needs and requirements and enforces standards.
  • Manage laboratory operations including the budget, ensuring quality control and safety compliance, developing policies and procedures, and ordering supplies. Identify and address issues and deficiencies and implement effective solutions.
  • May perform laboratory maintenance and laboratory research activities required by the study(s).
  • May assemble and assist with literature research, editing and preparing manuscripts, scientific illustrations, and computer graphics for publication.
  • Provide for establishment or development of laboratory by evaluating equipment or machinery to be ordered, planning interactions with IT systems, and drafting Standard Operating Procedures for using new equipment.
  • Foster and support a conducive consultant/client environment, providing business unit and campus representatives with assessment, training, and advisement in research area.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:

Education: Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry or field of study related to the research of the laboratory.

Experience: Six (6) years of experience working in a research laboratory setting that includes four (4) years in the relevant research specialization.

Supervisory Experience: Two (2) years of direct supervision or responsibility for training, work coordination, and monitoring the work of others.

Certification/Licensure: NA

Other: May require training related to occupational safety and health, environmental compliance, shipping of hazardous materials and/or ionizing radiation.

May include working in biohazardous/select agents and/or in Biosafety Level-3 Laboratories (ABSL-3) which require successful completion of Department of Justice security clearance for work with Select Agents and Toxins, as required by Federal regulation.

Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 undergraduate college credits being equivalent to one year of related experience. In instances where specific education and/or experience is required only directly related education and/or experience may be substituted.

**The role you'll contribute:**
The TRI Laboratory Research Assistant performs a variety of duties involved in the processing and analysis of clinical research specimens and data, with particular emphasis on assisting in the development and oversight of the Molecular and Cell Culture Cores of the laboratory. Work customarily involves practical knowledge in clinical research specimen collection, processing, and analysis, as well as application of specialized knowledge in the areas of molecular and protein assay development and optimization. The Laboratory Research Assistant is expected to work closely with the Biorespository Sr. Scientist/Coordinator and other laboratory staff to develop and implement appropriate laboratory procedures for optimal biospecimen quality and research data collection. The Laboratory Research Assistant is also expected to assist in the daily operations of the laboratory in other Core areas, including but not limited to, specimen processing, cell culture, nucleic acid and protein extractions, cryopreservation, and equipment maintenance and inventory control. The TRI Laboratory Research Assistant actively participates in outstanding customer service and accepts responsibility in maintaining relationships that are equally respectful to all.

+ Conducts daily oversight of operations in the Molecular and Cell Culture Cores of the laboratory.
+ Assists in developing and maintaining appropriate biospecimen processing, analysis, and quality control procedures, and monitors the supply inventory and instrument maintenance associated with the assigned Core areas.
+ Regularly monitors and evaluates processes, and reports any needed changes/improvements to the Biorepository Sr. Scientist/Coordinator in response to continuing research protocol development.
+ Performs pre-analytical, analytical, and post-analytical activities related to the molecular and cell culture cores, including oversight of nucleic acid and protein extraction procedures, and performance and evaluation of related biospecimen quality control metrics.
+ Assists in clinical tissue acquisition procedures, and processes tissue for histological evaluation, stem cell isolation, preparation, management, and maintenance of cell lines; cryopreservation, and storage of cells and tissue into liquid nitrogen and ultra-low temperature units.
+ Assists the Biorepository Sr. Scientist/Coordinator in laboratory coordination of procedures for specific research protocols, as assigned. This may also include assisting with development of new analytic techniques, novel molecular assays, and quality control metrics as appropriate for research protocol development.
+ Participates in appropriate continuing education activities and enrichment seminars provided by AdventhHealth.
+ Performs other duties as assigned or directed to ensure the smooth operation of the department.
