Laboratory Research Manager

Position Information: Responsible for management of a basic science research laboratory in the OK-INBRE program. Develops and implements strategic goals to meet the department's needs which may include development and management of projects related to the department's clinical, teaching, and research mission. 

Essentail Duties:

• Oversees the development and implementation of laboratory operational policies and procedures for the department's basic science researchers. Ensures department has the infrastructure and resources required to perform its role effectively and efficiently.
• Establishes and maintains an inventory control system for supplies and equipment and ensures that work orders for lab maintenance are placed in a timely and efficient manner.  
• Oversees the development and implementation of strategic goals for growth of the basic science research labs. Manages a variety of projects to ensure financial, quality, service, and operational goals are achieved.
• Develops methodologies and procedures for biomedical application, analyzes data, and may present findings to the scientific audience and general public.   
• May plan, develop, and manage projects in support of departmental clinical and research missions producing greater integration and effectiveness of activities. Confers with other researchers and medical staff to plan or review projects or provide expertise to improve data acquisition and analysis.  Develops schedules and timelines for the project. Oversees the development and implementation of standardized operating procedures. 
• Serves a key role in the facilitation between operating laboratories, researchers, and principal investigators to continuously enhance and develop cross-functional research interactions and opportunities. May work as a senior level expert in a laboratory. Assists with planning, developing, and managing projects in support of departmental clinical and research missions producing greater integrations and effectiveness of activities.
• Responsible for build-outs including program analysis and sources of potential sponsored funding. May assist with planning and construction of new laboratory facilities as well as associated project reporting.  
• Plans, develops, and maintains training programs for Lab Technicians and Researchers working in the research laboratory. Ensures all employees work in a safe environment.   
• Provides to management a summary of progress, risk of all projects, results, and queries related to laboratory performance. 
• May teach classes or seminars. 
• Performs related duties as needed to successfully fulfill the function of the position.

• Design, plan, and execute complex molecular biology experiments using a variety of techniques (e.g., PCR, qPCR, Western blotting, DNA sequencing, cell culture).
• Analyze experimental data using appropriate statistical and bioinformatics tools.
• Interpret results and draw scientifically sound conclusions.
• Troubleshoot experimental issues and optimize protocols.
• Maintain accurate and detailed laboratory records and documentation.
• Collaborate with other scientists and researchers to share findings and contribute to project goals.
• Prepare manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals and present research at scientific conferences.
• Stay current with the latest advancements and methodologies in molecular biology and related fields.
• Order and manage laboratory supplies and reagents.
• Contribute to grant writing and funding proposals.

• Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or a related life science discipline.
• 3+ years of post-doctoral or industry research experience in molecular biology.
• Proven expertise in a broad range of molecular biology techniques.
• Strong understanding of molecular biology principles, cellular processes, and genetic mechanisms.
• Experience with bioinformatics tools and data analysis software.
• Excellent critical thinking, problem-solving, and analytical skills.
• Strong written and oral communication skills, with a track record of scientific publications.
• Ability to work independently and effectively as part of a collaborative research team.
• Experience with microscopy techniques is a plus.
• Proficiency in relevant laboratory software and data management systems.

• Design, optimize, and execute complex molecular biology experiments, including PCR, qPCR, Western blotting, ELISA, cell culture, and gene editing techniques (e.g., CRISPR-Cas9).
• Analyze experimental data using appropriate statistical methods and software, interpreting results accurately.
• Maintain detailed and accurate laboratory notebooks, documenting all experimental procedures and findings.
• Develop and validate new assays and protocols to support research objectives.
• Troubleshoot experimental issues and devise effective solutions.
• Collaborate effectively with other scientists, technicians, and project managers within the R&D department.
• Prepare scientific reports, manuscripts for publication, and presentations for internal and external audiences.
• Stay current with the latest scientific literature and advancements in molecular biology and related fields.
• Contribute to the overall strategy and direction of research projects.
• Ensure compliance with laboratory safety regulations and best practices.

• Ph.D. in Molecular Biology, Biochemistry, Genetics, or a closely related field.
• Minimum of 3-5 years of postdoctoral or relevant industry research experience.
• Demonstrated expertise in a broad range of molecular biology techniques.
• Strong analytical and problem-solving skills, with a meticulous approach to experimental design and execution.
• Excellent written and oral communication skills, with a proven ability to present complex scientific data clearly.
• Proficiency in data analysis software (e.g., GraphPad Prism, R) and scientific literature databases.
• Ability to work independently and collaboratively in a fast-paced research environment.
• Experience with high-throughput screening or assay development is a significant plus.

Job Summary

A multi-institutional, federally funded Nanoscience Center seeks a highly organized and proactive individual to serve as Center Manager.

Department-Specific Responsibilities

• Responsible for coordinating the daily operations of the Center.
• Ensures effective communication among collaborators.
• Supports project deliverables, and helps to implement the Center's strategic vision across research, education, and outreach domains.
• Oversees the activities and staff of the laboratory, providing training to lab staff, and assuring observation of safety policies.

• Maintains fiscal accountability of the program, including grant proposal development, and approves all expenditures for the laboratory.

• Bachelor's degree in science, engineering, business, public administration, or a related field

• Master's degree or PhD in STEM, administration, or a related field

• 2 years of experience in project coordination, program management, or research administration
