Job Description
Under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor and the functional instruction of a Transportation Engineer, the incumbent is responsible for conducting field inspections of the district culvert/drainage Systems. Responsibilities include assessing the physical condition of culverts, recommending maintenance and road safety strategies, assisting in data collection, and assuring quality control of technical and maintenance equipment. May be required to travel including overnight stays on per diem. The incumbent will be required to work overtime including irregular shifts/alternate work schedules including holidays, weekends, and for annual night inspections. May be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts, and is expected to respond to emergency situations and calls when the Supervisor deems that it is in the best interest of the State.

Working Conditions
Position located at 845 East Pine Street, Lodi, Ca 95240, San Joaquin County.
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
Employee may be assigned to other operational units and/or geographical areas as operational needs dictate. Overnight travel out of town up to 80 percent of time may be required to meet operational needs.
The Highway Maintenance Leadworker may be exposed to and work in loud noise, dust, chemicals, extreme weather conditions, great heights, confined spaces, uneven and unstable terrain, and next to vehicle traffic. Required to wear all personal protective equipment and follow all policies, and procedures. Will work rotating or irregular shifts, including weekends, nights, holidays, overtime, and be able to respond to after-hour emergencies.

Job Description
Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker performs miscellaneous laboring duties in conjunction with the maintenance and repair of State highways. Works with a crew, or individually, performing highway maintenance activities. Must be able to perform heavy manual labor, traffic control and chain control functions. Typical duties include sealing cracks; loading, unloading and shoveling material; digging or repairing drainage ditches and culverts; and clearing drainage inlets. Operates light landscape, maintenance or construction equipment (pickup, cone truck, etc.). Keeps simple records. Assists with traffic control duties such as setting up lane closures, flagging operations, moving closures, and chain control. Removes obstacles, debris and carcasses from the travel way or state rights of way. May assist in the repair or replacement of signs, fence, and guardrail posts. Performs other duties as needed, including removing litter from highway roadsides, occasionally providing direction to probationers or Special Programs workers involved in litter removal, custodial work on state facilities, and minor repairs to equipment or facilities.
This position is not full-time. This position is intermittent and has no guarantee of weekly hours. A maximum of 1500 hours a year can be worked in this position. This intermittent position supports Caltrans full-time employee operations. Candidates must be available in the winter months for chain control operations and may be required to report to work within 30 minutes of a callout. Intermittent employees may continue to work after winter months depending on operational needs. Successful intermittent hires through hard work and on the job learning will then potentially be able to use this experience in future applications and interviews for full-time positions.

Under the direction of the Maintenance Supervisor, on a daily, weekly, and monthly basis, the Leadworker assists the Supervisor with the following tasks: scheduling work of the crew; assure that all equipment is serviced and maintained properly; lead the crew and give on the job training in a wide variety of maintenance functions; observe the crew to be sure that work habits follow the Code of Safe Practices and Chapter 8; provide for the safety of the crew and the traveling public; conduct safety meetings. Under the direction of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, Leadworker or other qualified crew member, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker performs miscellaneous labor while performing duties associated with maintaining the State highway system. The incumbent must possess a valid, unrestricted Class "C" Driver's License. The incumbent may be required to work overtime including nights and weekends, may be required to work temporary and/or intermittent varied work shifts, and may respond to emergency calls. May be loaned to other cost centers. This position may be subject to seasonal shift change. This position is represented under collective bargaining. Duties include but are not limited to:
Performs manual labor, operates light equipment, and power and hand tools while performing duties such as paving, pot-holing and crack-sealing; drain and ditch cleaning; sign and delineation installation, maintenance and repair; landscape irrigation and maintenance; brush and tree trimming; storm clean-up; litter and graffiti removal; traffic control; and other related duties. May be required to perform miscellaneous laboring work in connection with the maintenance of the State highways and safety roadside rest areas. Perform custodial duties such as emptying trashcans, sweeping and sanitizing facilities, litter pickup, cleaning bathrooms, replenishing supplies, and other related work. May perform minor repairs to facility equipment such as tightening loose bolts, nuts, and screws, and unplugging toilets.
Performs traffic control duties that may include setting and picking up lane closures using traffic cones, flares and advance warning signs; hand-flagging traffic; and operating a pilot vehicle, back-up truck and cone truck.
Keeps records such as pre and post operation reports on equipment operated; repair requests, crew/time reporting forms, and material and fuel usage forms. Performs pre and post operation checks; make minor and/or emergency repairs and adjustments to equipment; and be required to clean equipment and tools, and crew and work areas at the conclusion of work shift.

Working Conditions

Most of the incumbent's time will be spent in the field, operating equipment or working on foot. Weather conditions vary from a cold, windy, and wet winter climate to a very hot and predominately dry summer climate. Temperature extremes can range from below freezing in the winter to well over 100 degrees on a consistent basis in the summer. Occasional heavy thunderstorms can be expected in the summer months and heavy rain is to be expected in the winter. Job Description
Under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Worker performs miscellaneous laboring duties in conjunction with the maintenance and repair of State highways. The incumbent will work individually or with a crew and required to work overtime due to storms, emergencies, or special work projects, as determined by the Supervisor or Department. May be loaned to another crew. This position is represented under collective bargaining.Works with a crew performing highway maintenance activities. Typical duties include sealing cracks; loading, unloading and shoveling material; digging or repairing drainage ditches and culverts; and clearing drainage inlets. Operates light landscape, maintenance or construction equipment (pickup, cone truck, etc.). Keeps simple records.
Assists with traffic control duties such as setting up lane closures, flagging operations, moving closures, and chain control. Removes obstacles, debris and carcasses from the travel way or state rights of way. May assist in the repair or replacement of signs, fence, and guardrail posts. Performs other duties as needed, including removing litter from highway roadsides, occasionally providing direction to probationers or Special Programs workers involved in litter removal, custodial work on state facilities, and minor repairs to equipment or facilities.

Working under the supervision of a Caltrans Maintenance Supervisor, the Caltrans Highway Maintenance Leadworker is primarily responsible for working on a night graffiti crew operating light vehicles and equipment identified as category 2 equipment such as trucks including 4 cubic yards, 2 ton cargo or smaller and forklifts. The incumbent will be required to operate and maintain all hand equipment and material involved with the painting out of graffiti. The incumbent will be responsible for assisting with the moving lane closures. May be required to work at but not limited to 350' above land or water using various painting equipment. Will be required to work out of truck personnel baskets hung from crane trucks by cable or personnel baskets on hydraulic booms. Employee may be required to assist in raised pavement marker operations and stencil work.

Working Conditions
Position located in District 7, Los Angeles County - Special Crews.
Multiple positions may be filled from this recruitment.
Required to work in a wide range of sometimes-extreme conditions, including heat up to 120 degrees, cold to -15 degrees, strong winds, rain, sleet, snow, dust, noise and uneven surfaces. The workweek is normally 4/10-hour nights, 7:00 P.M. to 5:30 A.M. Monday night through Friday morning. The scheduling of the4/10- hour nights is at the discretion of the Region Management. Incumbent may be scheduled to work the day shift as needed to meet operational needs with proper advance notice as per Bargaining Unit 12, Memorandum of Understanding. Out of town work in Ventura County, Lancaster, Palmdale or the Grapevine area may be required eight to fifteen weeks a year. Will be required to work overtime due to callbacks, special work projects or to meet operational needs. Overtime will be assigned per Bargaining Unit 12, Memorandum of Understanding.
Personal safety requirements include but not limited to (as per Injury and Illness Prevention Program):
* Appropriate footwear, in good and sturdy condition, must be worn.
* For night work: ANSI Class III warning garments shall be worn. This may be achieved by combining ANSI Class E pants worn with an ANSI Class II vest over white coveralls.
* Long pants. No shorts or cutoffs.
* Provided safety gear: hard hats, safety glasses, hearing protection devices, face shields, gloves, respirators, chaps and other safety gear must be worn when required by the Department.
