Stanford's Graduate School Of Business (GSB) has built a global reputation based on its immersive and innovative management programs. We provide students a transformative leadership experience, pushing the boundaries of knowledge with faculty research, and offering a portfolio of entrepreneurial and non-degree programs that deliver global impact. We invite you to be part of our mission of developing innovative, principled, and insightful leaders who change lives, change organizations, and change the world.

The Golub Capital Social Impact Lab (Lab) is an initiative within the GSB that focuses on developing, applying, and testing cutting-edge digital tools to enhance the effectiveness of the social sector and catalyze innovation addressing social challenges. Led by Dr. Susan Athey, the Lab brings together affiliated academics, staff, researchers, and students passionate about developing, evaluating, and scaling innovative technology solutions for social impact. The Lab has conducted a wide range of research and development projects, working directly with nonprofits and social sector organizations to help them develop and implement technology solutions, design experiments to evaluate effectiveness, and iteratively improve the solutions, all with the goal of enhancing social impact.

The Lab's research falls into three main areas: (a) research to identify specific problems and associated potential technology solutions, including machine learning and artificial intelligence; (b) iterative experiments that test and deploy technology-driven solutions to optimize the products and services of partner organizations; and (c) general purpose research on methods, processes, and practices that support the development and scaling of technologies such as digital education, worker training, nudges, and information provision.

Reporting administratively to the Director, Research Operations within the Research Hub and operationally to the Lab Director and Faculty Director, the Research Director, Golub Capital Social Impact Lab, will lead and oversee research related to the mission of the Lab and ensure the research is disseminated widely to both academic and general audiences. This work includes defining, prioritizing, and managing research projects; managing and carrying out the research; writing, presenting, and publicizing research and related thought leadership; documenting, refining, and monitoring compliance with processes to ensure transparent and replicable research; supporting the writing of grant proposals around research projects; supporting the Lab Director in recruiting researchers and students, maintaining lab records, organizing lab events; and all organizational duties associated with achieving these objectives.

This position is a 2-year fixed-term role.

Your Primary Responsibilities Include

  • Hire, supervise, coach, and mentor a high-performing team of postdocs, students, and research staff to achieve the research and teaching mission, goals, and objectives.
  • Create, implement, and maintain project management systems to manage complex research projects and ensure research team members are progressing toward deadlines.
  • Identify, leverage, and partner with external firms.
  • Prioritize and extract data from various sources, such as notes, survey results, medical reports, and laboratory data, while maintaining their accuracy and completeness.
  • Determine data collection and analysis requirements. Design and customize research reports based on data in the database. Oversee and monitor regulatory compliance for the utilization of the data.
  • Use system reports and analyses to identify potentially problematic data, make corrections, and eliminate root causes for data problems or justify solutions to be implemented by others.
  • Create complex charts and databases, perform statistical analyses, and develop graphs and tables for publication and presentation.
  • Write and/or edit scientific content for proposals, research grants, peer-reviewed publications, presentations, translational and educational material, and other program activities.
  • Serve as a resource for non-routine inquiries, such as requests for statistics or surveys.
  • Test prototype statistical software and data analysis notebooks and participate in reviewing statistical software and analysis notebooks, including replicating empirical analyses or applying software to demonstrate, teach, or apply statistical methods developed in the lab.
  • Provide documentation based on audit and reporting criteria to investigators and research staff.
  • Gather information about ongoing research projects; contribute to strategic program/entity planning and related funding/financial sustainability.
Minimum Requirements

Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience or a combination of education and experience in a quantitative discipline such as economics, finance, statistics, or engineering.
