Job Description
The Nurse coordinates medical services for youth in care at the Camp and is responsible for maintaining appropriate records and files pertaining to medical services. The Nurse is directly responsible to the Camp Director. This temporary position for the summer camp season and is not eligible for overtime.
ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITES
The following duties and responsibilities are given as examples of the various types of work performed in this position. Other duties and responsibilities may be assigned.
- Portrays compassion and hospitality when providing medical care to the youth in program. Completes youth assessments on an initial and ongoing basis, including physical, dental, vision, hearing and other areas as appropriate.
- Assists the Camp Director in the initial review of camper applications to determine appropriateness for the camp program based on medical issues.
- Uses thoroughness and discretion while dispensing medications and maintaining accurate medical files for participants of programs.
- Practices alertness and truthfulness in keeping the Camp Director informed of medical concerns, safety issues, and incident follow-up.
- Exhibits enthusiasm and persuasiveness during leadership of medical and safety related trainings for staff.
- Demonstrates resourcefulness and thriftiness in the wise stewardship of the agency's resources when ordering and maintaining medical supplies for all of Camp. Ensures the orderliness of supplies and equipment are adequate and inventoried regularly.
- Expresses gentleness and attentiveness when arranging for the medical care of youth in program including regularly scheduled or emergency services. Maintains good public relations with the medical community as a liaison between Youth Ranches and doctors, emergency rooms, pharmacies and other medical providers.
- Prepares medical standing orders and has local doctor approve and sign camps medical procedures and standing orders annually prior to summer camp. Displays dependability and flexibility when assisting other staff members with tasks as needed or approved by Camp Director.
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENTS
The person filling this position must be a graduate of an accredited nursing program and currently licensed as a Nurse with the State of Florida (requires licensure as a Registered Nurse.) Previous experience in the nursing field, particularly dealing with youth is preferred.

Overview: Camp Kanuga is a summer camp for children and youth ages 6-18. Camp Kanuga is a Christian ministry affiliated with the Episcopal Church. Camp Kanuga offers day camps (ages 5-11), traditional overnight camp (ages 7-16), Expedition camps (ages 12-18), and Leadership development camps (rising 11th & 12th graders). Located on 1,400 acres in the western North Carolina mountains, Camp Kanuga is a part of Kanuga Conference, Inc. in Hendersonville, NC just south of Asheville, NC.
Accountability: The Health Care Manager reports directly to the Camp Director. Additionally, they may receive oversight from the Program Director, or the President of Kanuga Conferences, Inc.
Minimal Qualifications:

Principal Responsibilities:
- Implement procedures to carry out a system of documented health screening of every Camp Kanuga camper.
- Documented medication management: manage the administration of medications brought from home; administer OTC medications to campers whose parents have given their permission; organize medications for staff to administer during off-campus trips.
- Oversee Camp Kanuga's software that organizes each camper's medication.
- Help to organize Camp Kanuga's health-care schedule (including off-time) so that someone on the health-care staff is on-call for the entirety of the summer and directly available during peak-times.
- Provide training and information for camp staff to carry out their role and responsibility in camp health-care, prepare them to use health-care supplies and equipment with which they may be furnished, identify those situations which should be attended to only by certified health personnel, and use established sanitary procedures when dealing with infectious waste or body fluids.
- Consult with campers and staff who have medical issues, especially during peak-times. As needed, assist other Kanuga health care staff.
- Order adequate supply of medical supplies, stock the infirmaries and inventory supplies at the end of the season.
- With discretion, inform the necessary camp staff of camper health issues. Keep the Director informed of on-going and emerging problems.
- Be the main liaison and care-giver for sick summer staff.
- Compile suggestions for following camp seasons, focusing on ways in which the health needs of Camp Kanuga campers can be better met through Camp Kanuga's health-care practices, especially focusing on ways to prevent the occurrence of common injuries and illnesses.
- Be a leader in the camp community, setting the example for behavior and attitude of all staff and campers in their relationships and overall camp experience; (leading by doing and managing by coordinating, publicly identifying and celebrating outstanding performance and making follow-up visits to areas or individuals having problems)
- Be a liaison between parent/camper and Camp Kanuga, always giving personal, caring attention.
- Continuously observe implementation of all Camp Kanuga guidelines, policies, procedures, and covenants; give feedback and coaching where there are problems, keep the Camp Director informed of status at all times, giving early warnings of emerging problems.
