Job Description

Role: Campaign Organizer

Location and Timeline: We are hiring a campaign organizer for this position beginning ASAP and continuing through November, 2026.

Who We Are: The Outreach Team is the national engine of campaigners and organizers powering the young-people vote movement. With an on-the-ground presence in communities all across the country, our world-class team runs successful civic engagement campaigns to build a future that’s fairer, healthier, safer, and more peaceful for everyone. We are excited to be working with the Coalition for Healthy Democracy on a campaign to engage members of the community to advocate for a stronger democracy.

General Overview:

Organizers will be charged with recruiting, training, and working with a team of volunteers in their local communities to drive action for electoral reform. Across the country our political system is worse than ever. And Massachusetts is no longer the exception: we have the least competitive elections and the least transparent legislature in the country. This system keeps power in the hands of a few rather than the many. Campaign Organizers will engage constituents around democracy reform and action opportunities in their communities. The Organizer will receive a fresh list of volunteer leads daily who they will work to engage on actions that build support for two ballot initiatives that would make government more transparent and create an open primary in the state. Organizers will also work to engage VIPs, stakeholders and community advocacy groups to endorse and support the statewide initiatives.

What You’ll Do:

  • Recruit and Train a Community of Volunteer Activists
    • Call and text supporters and recruit them into grassroots actions.
    • Identify new volunteers from signers who support the issue.
    • Run grassroots skills training to develop effective campaigners among volunteers.
    • Keep meticulous track of a volunteer list so that no potential volunteer falls through the cracks.
    • Represent the campaign through participation in community spaces and events, while engaging and uplifting coalition and partner organizations.
  • Generate Campaign Actions
    • Engage volunteers to collect signatures in support of the initiatives
    • Generate hundreds of additional actions with a particular focus on social media posts, phone calls, postcards, and photo petitions to show support for the initiative.
    • Recruit and train volunteers to generate more petitions and volunteer engagement at events.
    • Recruit and engage with grasstop VIPs to publicly support the initatives
  • Organize Events
    • Organize and execute in-person events demonstrating support for transparency and electoral reform
    • Educate the community about the broken electoral system in Massachusetts
    • Nail 100% of all messaging and legal requirements and ensure that volunteers do the same.
  • Manage Digital Campaign, Data Management, and Reporting Tools
    • Demonstrate public support by recruiting volunteers to post on their own social media platforms including Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter.
    • Use peer-to-peer texting services and relational organizing tools to communicate with community members.
    • Send timely and compelling email campaigns to recruit activists to campaign activities.
    • Track every interaction with detailed notes in order to report numbers daily and write weekly reports on the results of the campaign.

Who You Are & Keys to Success (the must-haves):

To be successful in this job, you will excel in these areas:

  • Relationship Building: You develop and maintain strong, collaborative relationships with a diverse group of local and statewide community members. You are attentive and empathetic to the communities we serve, regardless of race, ethnicity, class, gender, or ability, and can identify shared values across communities for collective growth. You can build authentic relationships through authenticity and reliability, continuously uplifting others and their goals. You are comfortable and experienced in public speaking to a group about democracy issues.
  • Inclusive and Collaborative Leadership: You approach leadership with a “power with” mindset that recognizes the impact power hierarchies have in different settings. You can learn from others, see and hear other perspectives, and step in or step back as necessary. You are reliable and accountable, always transparent about your abilities, capacities, and expectations. You honor the time and commitments of others while inspiring them to meet goals.
  • Commitment to Equity and Inclusion: You have a proven ability to develop meaningful connections with diverse communities, including a wide range of community organizations, community leaders, and community members. You work with the community and within the workplace to identify areas of improvement for a more equitable environment. You take continued action and efforts to improve your REI knowledge, skills, and tools.
  • Drive to Achieve Results: You have experience accomplishing ambitious goals and getting results, even when there are obstacles. You have the experience or ability to plan backwards to meet multiple goals timely and effectively. When there are unexpected changes, you bounce back and adjust quickly, learning and improving from any mistakes.

Skills and Experiences we Expect of all Outreach Team employees:

About Illinois PIRG

Illinois PIRG is an advocate for the public interest. We speak out for the public and stand up to special interests on problems that affect the public's health, safety and wellbeing.

How is it possible that, in the richest country the world has ever seen, dissatisfaction is rising and life expectancy is lower than in any other high-income country? Is it just inequality? Or could it be that, in the name of producing and consuming more "stuff," we’ve lost sight, as a society, of what really matters -- including health, wellbeing, community, and a clean environment?

Illinois PIRG’s mission is to spotlight these problems and find new solutions. Let's make more stuff reusable, repairable and recyclable, instead of single-use and designed for obsolescence. Let's choose conservation and renewable energy over fossil fuels. Let's value clean air and water over short-term profits and lower costs. Let's grow food that nurtures us as well as the land, with fewer pesticides, antibiotics and other quick fixes.

Getting governments and corporations to make these choices is hard, and steps in the right direction are almost always small. But we have a 50-year track record of training and putting even our newest staff in a position to overcome powerful interests and win real results for the public interest.

Our Mission and Values

Illinois PIRG is part of The Public Interest Network, which operates and supports organizations committed to a shared vision of a better world and a strategic approach to social change. Visit for things you should know about our network when you apply.
