Sentara Heart Hospital is looking for a Cath Holding Cardiac Technician to join the team.
The position is 7A-7P, 3 days a week, Monday - Friday. No weekends or major holidays.
Cardiac Techs help aid the RNs throughout the prep and recovery of our Cardiac Catheterization, Electrophysiology, and Cardiac OR patients. In our department we prep and recover 40 - 60 patients a day. In the recovery area, the cardiac techs are trained to settle patients in the room postoperatively (hooking to the monitor, cleaning, repositioning); obtain EKGs or any specimens ordered; remove arterial and venous sheaths from the femoral, radial and brachial sites; help patients that are on bedrest with eating, toileting, or any other request per the patient; and transporting patients to their inpatient room or assisting in the discharge process. This job does require the capabilities to lift, push, pull, and standing for long periods of time.

The Cardio Technician under general supervision performs electrocardiography (ECG) testing, stress testing, and Holter monitors by attaching electrodes to the patient, and operates equipment. This position scans and analyzes ECG, stress and Holter monitor strips. This role will explain procedures to prepare patients for ECG and related tests and notifies cardiologist of abnormalities.

- Assists the cardiologist in performing routine exercise stress test/nuclear stress test, monitors EKG rhythm and reports any inappropriate responses immediately to physician such as EKG rhythm disturbances, complaints voiced by patient such as shortness of breath, chest pain, palpitations, dizziness, but not all inclusive. Terminates exercise stress testing under physician's order.
- Assists with inventory and stocking of exercise testing room.
- Assists with the maintenance of exercise stress testing machine, defibrillator, grasby pump, IVAC pump, according to departmental policy and procedures, as well as cleaning and troubleshooting of equipment. Ensures preventative maintenance is performed on applicable equipment.

- Once patient arrives into department for testing, verifies identity of patient and accuracy of exam ordered. Prepares patient for exercise testing procedure by explanation and demonstration, if necessary, as well as prepping skin per policy and ensuring IV access is obtained and intact. Notify RN if IV access is not intact. Ensure consent is obtained.
- Performs 12 leak EKG, applies Holter Monitors in addition to scanning and generating Holter Monitor reports. Notifies abnormalities to physician.
- Performs EEG testing in the absence of the EEG tech or other qualified
- Performs technical and non-technical tasks as needed to ensure quality outcome is achieved on patients; participates in the CQI plan for the department.
- Pre-stress testing, verifies physician's order, reviews chart by evaluating the patient history and lab results to rule out any contraindications to testing. Reports any abnormal lab results of potential contraindications to physician.
- Records, files and delivers patient reports to unit/PMD/Medical Records in a timely manner.

Routinely provides ECG in-service education and training to nursing, respiratory care staff and students. Performs routine maintenance on ECG, Holter and MUSE equipment. Troubleshoots minor problems with equipment. Contacts Marquette Technical Support for additional troubleshooting with the MUSE computer system. Demonstrates Hamot's commitment to Service Excellence by understanding the needs of patients, their families, physicians and co-workers and doing what is required the first time, every time by being responsible, sensitive, accurate, timely, coordinated and thorough.
High school graduate or equivalent.
Two years of patient care experience with prior computer experience preferred.
**Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:**
Must be certified in BCLS or become certified within six months. CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire

As a Cardiac Monitor Nursing Technician on this team, you play a critical role in ensuring patients have access to the medical services as needed, especially during emergencies. You will promptly alert nursing staff of any alerts or alarms, helping facilitate effective intervention and safety protocols. A caregiver in this position works rotating days/nights from 6:30AM - 7:00PM or 6:30PM - 7:00AM, with rotating weekend and holiday requirements.
A caregiver who excels in this role will:
- Perform ongoing surveillance of patients' cardiac monitors, cardiac rhythm and vital signs.
- Notify nursing caregivers of changes in cardiac rhythm and/or hemodynamics that could impact the patient's condition.
- Interpret patient's cardiac rhythm and document in the patient's electronic medical record.
- Answer the telephone and communicate clearly when receiving and delivering information.
- Orient and mentor new caregivers and serve as a training and troubleshooting resource for the CMU and nursing units.
- Provide reports for the oncoming shift.
Minimum qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- High school diploma or GED.
- Working knowledge of medical terminology, anatomy/physiology, computer and typing skills.
Preferred qualifications for the ideal future caregiver include:
- Knowledge and understanding of basic patient care activities through successful completion of a formal training program in Allied Health or a healthcare field.
- Patient care experience in a hospital, nursing home or healthcare field.
- Completion of EKG/Cardiac Monitoring course.
- EKG certification or equivalent.
- Experience as a Monitor Technician, Medical Assistant, Patient Care Nurse Assistant (PCNA), EKG Technician, or EMT.
- Demonstrated skill in recognizing abnormal cardiac rhythms.
