Position Overview

We are seeking a Senior Network Solutions Engineer to join our Professional Services organization. This highly skilled individual will act as a subject matter expert for networking and software-defined networking (SDN) technologies, working closely with our Systems Integrations team, Engineering teams, and PreSales engineers.

The ideal candidate will have a deep technical background in enterprise networking and a strong understanding of modern virtualized and cloud-native networking approaches, including OpenStack Neutron, VMware NSX, OVN/OVS, Calico, Cilium, and related technologies. This role will shape network designs for our Private Cloud Director (PCD) deployments, ensure successful integrations with customer environments, and create best practice documentation for internal and external stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities

1. Technical Leadership & Advisory

  • Provide expert network design and troubleshooting guidance to the Professional Services Systems Integrations team for PCD deployments.
  • Partner with Engineering to address network architecture challenges, influence product design for better interoperability, and resolve complex escalations.
  • Support pre-sales engineers in designing network architectures for customer proposals, POCs, and technical validations.
     

2. Solution Design & Integration

  • Design and document best practice network architectures for integrating PCD with physical and virtual network infrastructures.
  • Guide SDN integration efforts across multiple vendor and open-source platforms (e.g., VMware NSX, OVN/OVS, OpenStack Neutron, VXLAN, Geneve, Calico, Cilium).
  • Perform hands-on configuration, testing, and optimization of networking components in customer and lab environments.
     

3. Documentation & Knowledge Sharing

  • Develop internal best practice guides for network design, deployment, and troubleshooting in OpenStack and Kubernetes environments.
  • Create customer-facing documentation to support network planning and implementation.
  • Deliver enablement sessions for Professional Services, PreSales, and Support teams on networking topics and technologies.
     

4. Continuous Improvement & Innovation

  • Stay current with advancements in networking, SDN, NFV, and cloud-native network architectures.
  • Work with Engineering to propose new features and enhancements for improved network integration and automation.
  • Contribute to the refinement of Professional Services delivery methodologies for network design and implementation.
Required Qualifications
  • 15+ years of enterprise networking experience, including design, deployment, and troubleshooting.
  • Hands-on experience with Firewall-as-a-Service (FWaaS), VPN-as-a-Service (VPNaaS), and Load Balancer-as-a-Service (LBaaS) solutions.
  • Expertise in routing, switching, VLANs, VXLAN, BGP, OSPF, and related protocols.
  • Strong background in software-defined networking (SDN) and network function virtualization (NFV).
  • Experience with OpenStack Neutron networking services and plugins, as well as integrations with major SDN controllers.
  • Specialization in VMware networking (NSX-T, NSX-V) or OpenStack networking, with the ability to work across both stacks preferred.
  • Knowledge of cloud-native networking for Kubernetes (e.g., Calico, Cilium, Flannel).
  • Hands-on experience with network troubleshooting tools and methodologies in multi-vendor environments.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience automating network provisioning and configuration using tools like Ansible, Terraform, PowerShell or Python.
  • Familiarity with load balancers, firewalls, and security policy automation.
  • Vendor certifications (e.g., CCNP/CCIE, JNCIE, VCAP-NV, or equivalent) are highly desirable.
  • Experience authoring technical whitepapers or contributing to open-source networking projects.

As a community owned, not-for-profit municipal electric utility, has been providing dependable electric service to the City of Santa Clara residents and businesses since 1896. Silicon Valley Power is not driven by profits, as reflected in its significantly lower utility rates when compared to other private sector utilities. Today, SVP owns, operates, and participates in more than 2,000 MW of electric generating resources delivering 4,800 GWh of electricity. The Position:

This is a professional position in the classified service assigned to the City of Santa Clara's Electric Utility Department, Silicon Valley Power (SVP). This position works directly for SVP's Systems Support Group (SSG) which is the technology backbone of SVP. SSG is a growing division, we directly support a large range of technology projects and modernization efforts within SVP, including activities in support of the unprecedented load growth of the Utility.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Network Administrator to design, implement, and support both enterprise and utility-specific network infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Cisco technologies. The incumbent plays a critical role in ensuring the availability, performance, and security of the organization's overall network environment, including SVP's utility communication and control systems.
In this role, the Network Administrator is responsible for administering and monitoring network services, managing a variety of advanced network and security products-including Cisco firewalls and intrusion prevention systems- and maintaining compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requirements as well as applicable state and local mandates. This position involves supporting and maintaining complex infrastructure components such as enterprise-grade Cisco firewalls, routers, switches, wireless controllers, such as HP Aruba switches, and RSA Authentication Manager, while also managing secure VPN access and routing protocols and future state zero trust network access initiatives.

The incumbent will oversee DNS infrastructure, support VoIP systems to ensure call quality and reliability, and proactively monitor network performance to detect and resolve issues related to

connectivity, latency, or system failures. The role also requires accurate documentation of network configurations and changes, collaboration with internal teams on infrastructure projects and upgrades, and participation in organizational capacity planning.

The Position:

This is a professional position in the classified service assigned to the City of Santa Clara’s Electric Utility Department, Silicon Valley Power (SVP). This position works directly for SVP’s Systems Support Group (SSG) which is the technology backbone of SVP. SSG is a growing division, we directly support a large range of technology projects and modernization efforts within SVP, including activities in support of the unprecedented load growth of the Utility.

We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Network Administrator to design, implement, and support both enterprise and utility-specific network infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Cisco technologies. The incumbent plays a critical role in ensuring the availability, performance, and security of the organization’s overall network environment, including SVP’s utility communication and control systems.

In this role, the Network Administrator is responsible for administering and monitoring network services, managing a variety of advanced network and security products—including Cisco firewalls and intrusion prevention systems- and maintaining compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requirements as well as applicable state and local mandates. This position involves supporting and maintaining complex infrastructure components such as enterprise-grade Cisco firewalls, routers, switches, wireless controllers, such as HP Aruba switches, and RSA Authentication Manager, while also managing secure VPN access and routing protocols and future state zero trust network access initiatives.

The incumbent will oversee DNS infrastructure, support VoIP systems to ensure call quality and reliability, and proactively monitor network performance to detect and resolve issues related to

connectivity, latency, or system failures. The role also requires accurate documentation of network configurations and changes, collaboration with internal teams on infrastructure projects and upgrades, and participation in organizational capacity planning.

In addition, this position supports business continuity by ensuring high availability and disaster recovery capabilities across all network components, investigates and reports on security incidents in accordance with departmental policy or direction from senior management, and provides technical leadership and mentorship to others.

As a community-owned, not-for-profit municipal electric utility, has been providing dependable electric service to residents and businesses in the City of Santa Clara since 1896. SVP is the only full-service, vertically integrated, publicly owned utility in Silicon Valley owning generation, transmission, and distribution assets. Silicon Valley Power is not driven by profits, as reflected in its significantly lower utility rates when compared to other private sector utilities. Today, SVP owns, operates, and participates in more than 2,000 MW of electric generating resources delivering 4,800 GWh of electricity. SVP is growing due to data center expansion, high-density developments, and electrification initiatives. SVP's peak load will be increasing from 700 MW to 1300 MW in the next 5-10 years. To accommodate future growth, SVP is implementing a 400 million system expansion and infrastructure replacement plan.
The Position:

This is a temporary, as-needed position assigned to the City of Santa Clara's Electric Utility Department, Silicon Valley Power (SVP). The position is part of the Systems Support Group (SSG), which functions as the technology backbone of SVP and is responsible for critical technology modernization, cybersecurity, and operational support in response to rapid utility growth and evolving regulatory requirements.
We are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Network Engineer to design, implement, and support both enterprise and utility-specific network infrastructure, with a strong emphasis on Cisco technologies. The incumbent plays a critical role in ensuring the availability, performance, and security of the organization's overall network environment, including the SVP's utility communication and control systems.

In this role, the Network Administrator is responsible for administering and monitoring network services, managing a variety of advanced network and security products-including, but not limited to, Cisco firewalls and intrusion prevention systems- and maintaining compliance with Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) requirements as well as applicable state and local mandates. This position involves supporting and maintaining complex multi-protocol infrastructure components, including enterprise-grade Cisco firewalls, routers, switches, and wireless controllers. Additionally, it consists of managing secure VPN access, routing protocols, and future zero-trust network access initiatives.
As an as-needed employee, this is an "at-will" position, and there is no guarantee of hours. Hours are limited to 999 in a fiscal year or 960 hours in a fiscal year for retired CalPERS annuitants.

Typical Duties
Network: Design, configure, deploy, and maintain secure enterprise-grade network infrastructure, including routers, switches, wireless controllers, and access points within a large and complex high-availability multi-protocol environment.
Network Performance: Proactively monitor network utilization and capacity, and troubleshoot issues related to connectivity, degradation, or failure.
Network Security: Design, configure, deploy, and maintain, including but not limited to firewalls, VPNs, IPS systems, and zero-trust platforms, in a highly segmented environment.
VOIP: Support VoIP infrastructure to ensure QoS, call quality, and reliability.
Cybersecurity: Investigate and produce comprehensive reports on all cybersecurity incidents and threats.
Access Control: Maintain a zero-trust security model, implementing strict access controls, multi-factor authentication, and least-privilege principles.
Process and Documentation: Maintain accurate documentation of network configurations, diagrams, and change control records to ensure consistency and compliance.
Operational Support: Participate in the ticketing queue for service requests and after-hours maintenance windows as needed.
Communication: Communicate effectively on technical issues and solutions to both technical and non-technical stakeholders.

Minimum Qualifications
Minimum Education Requirements:

Associate degree from an accredited University.
Minimum Experience Requirements:

Three (3) Years of Hands-On experience within an enterprise environment as a Network Administrator, Network Engineer, Sr. Network Engineer, or Network Architect.
Desirable Qualifications:
  • Bachelor's degree in computer science, Information Technology, Engineering, or a related technical field from an accredited University.
  • Five (5) Years of Hands-On experience within an enterprise environment as a Network Administrator, Network Engineer, Sr. Network Engineer, Network Architect, or equivalent, preferably within a NERC-CIP regulated public utility.

Position Summary


Contribute to the day-to-day operations associated with operating and maintaining an R&D lab environment (servers, network, topologies). The Lab Infrastructure and Network Administrator will install, provision, and provide initial configuration of resources supporting the engineering lab function, such as routers, switches, servers, power distribution, and cabling. Administer and maintain deployed lab resources. Assist in the relocation, storage, or decommissioning of resources. The position requires the employee to be on-site (remote not permitted) and on-call 24/7.

Key Responsibilities

• Maintain existing Hardware, Asset Inventory tools, Expertise with Install, upgrade and monitoring software & hardware, primarily VMware & Linux OS.
• Monitor IT infrastructure and networking that is always up and running.
• Interact with cross functional team and IT team to resolve any LAB Hardware issues, work with teams to assist in troubleshooting, identify root cause, and provide technical support when needed.
• Perform routine/scheduled audits of the systems, including all backups and support 24/7 on call duty.
• Apply OS patches and upgrades regularly.
• Work within a multi-disciplined Agile team to design, implement, monitor, and support solutions for monitoring WAN and LAN network devices.

Minimum Qualifications

• Ability to maintain operating systems, business applications, security tools, PCs, local and wide area networking.
• 5+ years of experience in lab administrating.
• Good presentation, documenting, and mentoring skills.
• Ability to use security tools and patch.
• Hands-on working experience in HWs Servers like (HPE, DELL, and Super-Micro Servers).
• Can set up the end-end network topology.
• Can troubleshoot and solve networking problems.
• Install new/rebuild existing servers and configure hardware, storage, etc. per standards and project requirements.
