Purpose & Scope:
The Nurse Extern (NE) works under the direct supervision of the RN and is an active member of the health care team. Under the direct supervision of a licensed nurse, the NE performs a variety of routine duties involving the care of patients including performing direct patient care or activities of daily living, observing changes in the status of patients, providing a clean and safe environment, transporting patients, and other related duties. The Nurse Extern must be empathetic and have good communication and nursing skills to care for patients. The ability to retrieve, communicate or otherwise present information in a written, auditory or visual fashion is essential. The primary method to express or exchange ideas is through the spoken word. Written, telephone, and manual dexterity skills are required for this position.
Education:
High school or equivalent is required.
Experience:
Completion of both fundamentals of nurse coursework and clinical rotation are required.
Certification/Licensure:
BLS certification required.

Job Description
Under the general direction of the Laboratory Director, or their designee, continues CLS training on analytical procedures and performs pre-analytical and post-analytical procedures according to the California Lab Law and Regulations permitted for non-licensed personnel. Enhances quality of patient care and service through interdepartmental cooperation and quality assurance protocols.
Essential Responsibilities:
+ For analyzing practice cases, correctly verifies that the proper specimen is being analyzed for the correct patients and that the correct test is being performed.
+ Using the training environment, performs tests on post-verified patient specimens and unknowns and reviews results with supervisor or designee for competency assessment.
+ Loads specimens on analyzers as directed by a CLS and locates specimens for add-on tests.
+ Demonstrates the ability to determine the adequacy and qualities of specimens submitted for testing and gives specimens to licensed laboratory personnel for final disposition.
+ Practices quality control procedures and demonstrates an understanding of the importance of quality control for ensuring accuracy of clinical data.
+ Performs routine preventative maintenance and troubleshooting on assigned instruments and equipment according to established schedule and procedure and under the supervision of a CLS.
+ + Records on instrument logs any repairs, replacement, and maintenance needed of equipment.
+ Receives supplies into a testing area; dates and stores appropriately under the direction of the CLS.
+ Performs data entry for statistical analysis to support the CLSs evaluation, validation and correlation studies.
+ As directed by the supervisor or manager, assists with special projects not requiring licensed staff.
Basic Qualifications:
Experience
+ Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos. Ability to write simple correspondence.
+ Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other incumbents of the organization.
+ Must be willing to work in a Labor Management Partnership environment.
Education
+ Baccalaureate degree in Clinical Laboratory Sciences (CLS) or related field and recently completed a California State approved CLS training program at a Kaiser Permanente Northern California facility and eligible to take the State approved CLS licensing exam by start of the CLS Extern position.
License, Certification, Registration
+ Clinical Laboratory Scientist License (California) within 3 months of hire

The AbbVie EXCEL Externship is a two-day, unpaid, immersive experience for 2nd year undergraduate (sophomore) students interested in future internships with AbbVie. Students will join us at AbbVie's Headquarters in Lake County, IL during August 2026 to:

Clinical Trial Operations Overview
The AbbVie Excel Externship in Clinical Trial Operations serves as a key talent pipeline for our Clinical Trial Operations Internship Program. Externship participants are strongly considered for internship opportunities within Clinical Trial Operations for the following year.
Clinical Trials are required before a new compound can be available for use by patients. A clinical study in human volunteers is conducted to answer specific health questions: Is it safe? Does it work? Is it better than what is currently offered to patients? At AbbVie, the Clinical Operations group conducts/manages clinical trials and provides therapeutically aligned, scientific strategy and operations management for the planning, execution and reporting of clinical development programs to enable successful global registration and commercialization of drug development projects.
The following functional areas will be highlighted during the Externship experience:
+ Clinical Data Strategy & Operations (CDSO)
+ Study Management Associate Organization (SMAO)
+ Clinical Acceleration and Performance (CAP)
Qualifications
Minimum Qualifications
+ Pursuing a Bachelor's degree in a STEM discipline with an emphasis on Science
+ Expected graduation date between December 2027 - June 2028
Preferred Qualifications
+ Proven track record of teamwork, adaptability, innovation, and integrity
+ Business mindset and excellent communication, leadership, project management, problem solving, and analytical skills
+ Microsoft Excel or other database experience is a plus
Note that roles supporting clinical trial operations are not focused on drug development. The roles are operational in nature. This is not a track or feeder opportunity for medical students (MD) or PhD/Postdoctoral routes.
