**Responsibilities:**
GENERAL PURPOSE
Under the supervision of the section Supervisor or Operations Coordinator, the Lab Clinical Support Tech III serves as a lead technician in performing, coordinating, and trouble- shooting more advanced duties in the laboratory. Exercises advanced knowledge, judgment and problem-solving skills. Is able to perform essential functions of a Laboratory Clinical Support Tech II and meets the criteria for completing training in advanced assignments and/or successfully completes training for Lab Clinical Support III level assignments as designated by section. Serves as a primary resource to physicians, nurses, and other laboratory personnel regarding specimen handling and processing.
**SUPERVISION AND DIRECTION RECEIVED:**
+ Under supervision of the Specimen Management/Microbiology Receiving Supervisor. Takes direction from the Operations Coordinator, Clinical Support Tech IV, or Medical Technologist II in the absence of the section Supervisor.

+ Answers telephone calls, providing routine information related to test results, testing/specimen requirements or other technical information (reference ranges, turnaround times and referral laboratory information), as well as general product or service information.
+ Answers questions from specimen collection locations regarding transport and minimum volumes.
+ Informs ordering providers when the ordered test(s) cannot be performed and works to remedy this situation whenever possible.
+ Takes appropriate action as needed to meet the customer's request, including test request add-on's and proper transfer of calls to other destinations as needed.
+ Scans requisitions into the scanning system confirming readability and keywords.
+ Participates in Quality Assurance data collection as required.
+ Lab (Technical) Support (20%)
+ Assists technologists in the pre-analytical processing of select tests including the centrifugation, separating and storing of samples.
+ Works with a variety of health care providers to troubleshoot problem specimens and to clarify correct test selection.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Education, Experience or Equivalent Combination:
    • High school diploma or GED
    • 2 years customer service experience and/or healthcare experience
    • Complete Medical Terminology and Pharmacology online courses within six months of hire
  • Licensure/ Registration/ Certification:
  • Complete BLS course within 1 week of hire and maintained BLS certification in accordance with American Heart Association (AHA). No online only courses accepted.
  • Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
    • Demonstrated organizational skills
    • Demonstrated verbal and written communication skills, including appropriate use of English grammar and spelling

ESSENTIAL DUTIES:

  1. (20-50%) Perform functions that support / provide patient care.
  • Patients are roomed according to rooming process standards
  • Vital signs and other pertinent physical measurements are obtained and recorded accurately.
  • Expanded medication history is collected, updated and documented to ensure quality and accuracy of medication list (according to authorized policy and demonstrating proficiency).
  • Exam rooms and treatment rooms are prepared for examination of the patient and set up for procedures.
  • Chart prep is completed for patient appointments as indicated by the type of clinic visit and the reason for the appointment
  • Messages and test results are accurately received and relayed to the appropriate person/location in a manner consistent with clinic practices and/or standards.
  • Gathers all necessary and appropriate information from a caller and relays information to the appropriate provider for necessary follow-up.
  • Patient correspondence performed when requested.
  • Patients are assisted in completing forms when appropriate.
  1. (10-20%) Maintain equipment and keep adequate records
  • An inventory of instruments and equipment is kept current.
  • Instruments and equipment are calibrated as needed and maintained in proper working order. All maintenance is documented
  1. (10-20%) Maintaining clinic supplies and ensure they are adequately stocked and well organized.
  • Stock supply cabinets and rooms and organizes items as needed.
  • Outdated supplies are removed and disposed of following department procedures.
  1. (10-20%) Performs cleaning and sterilizing procedures to support infection control and OSHA standards.
  • Prepare and sterilize instruments and equipment according to procedure.
  • Complete scheduled cleaning requirements for the designated work areas.
  • Document completion of work to comply with infection control and OSHA standards.
  1. (20-50%) Documentation
    • Accurately document patient care and education materials, timely and completely in the EHR (electronic health record).
  2. (5-10%) Mentor new colleagues and students (if trained and working in this role)
  • Demonstrate ability to identify the orientee's learning needs and plan appropriate learning experiences
  • Demonstrate ability to implement an individualized orientation plan for the orientee
