**Job Summary**
The Clinical Veterinarian is a full-time role meant to provide top notch and ethical veterinary health care for laboratory animals and ensure CRL's mission of saving human and animal lives! A successful individual will also advise regarding the husbandry, care and maintenance of laboratory animals as well as facilitating training for technicians. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
+ Manage health care for the animals within the facility.

+ Perform literature searches relating to veterinary subject matters.
+ Ensure facility is following all applicable regulations, guidelines and standards that relate to animal care and use (E.g., USDA, FDA, AAALAC).
+ Make recommendations and assist in establishing and enhancing veterinary and animal care standards.
+ May use controlled substances and be responsible for maintaining appropriate records.
+ May develop new or innovative procedural improvements appropriate to research studies.
+ May assist in management of the activities of assigned section, including supervising

**Job Qualifications**
QUALIFICATIONS:
+ Education: Veterinary degree (D.V.M./V.M.D.) or international equivalent.
+ Experience: 0 to 2 years related experience with animal care. Preferred but not required as we have a training program to assist with joining the CRL team.
+ An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above.
+ Certification/Licensure: Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least one U.S. state required. Ability to practice veterinary medicine in the work state highly desirable.

Job Description
**Primary Purposes and Functions:**
+ The Clinical Veterinarian is responsible for providing additional veterinary oversight for the care and use of animals at the De Soto, KS research facility and other locations as needed. They will be responsible for ensuring that procedures are humane, legal, ethical, and efficient. Responsibilities also include training and potential membership on the IACUC.
+ The Clinical Veterinarian will also support the Attending Veterinarian with management of the clinical research facilities and staff. Management duties include but are not limited to: supervising direct reports, dotted line oversight of animal caretakers, farm oversight, equipment oversight, etc. The Clinical veterinarian will need a strong sense of ownership and accountability when it comes to managing employees and animal care.
**Duties and Responsibilities:**
+ Assist with on- and off-site clinical studies for product licensure, including but not limited to advice on clinical procedures (such as vaccination, challenge, sampling, clinical observations, necropsy and surgery), collecting data, training and supervising technicians and staff. Have excellent motivation skills and empathy to help mentor direct reports. Conduct necropsy, submit samples for laboratory testing, and prepare reports for animals that die during a study. Conduct in-house vaccine studies for Marketing/Technical Services Assist in strategic planning of study development, study labor, and study innovation with study investigators.
+ 50% Act as one of the institution's licensed animal care providers and oversee implementation of procedures and policies to ensure animal welfare. Conduct vendor surveillance, as appropriate.
+ 20% Develop and conduct training for R&D technical staff in animal care and usage.
+ 10% Serve as officer or alternate member on the IACUC. Attend IACUC review and Animal Services/Research Facility meetings with R&D. Oversee company animal adoption program, as appropriate.
+ 10% Maintain current knowledge of diseases and disease prevention practices for companion animal and livestock species.
+ 5% Safety - Ensure that all animal areas conform to company safety and bio-safety standards.
**Qualifications:**
+ Doctor of Veterinary Medicine (DVM) or equivalent required.
+ Must be possess valid Kansas veterinary license or be able to obtain licensure within 60 days of hire.
+ Must have Category II USDA Accreditation or be able to obtain shortly after obtaining Kansas Licensure.
+ Experience with both companion animal and livestock preferred. Large animal experience required.
+ Good interpersonal, communication (both written and oral) and organizational skills are essential.
+ Must be able to work in a team environment.
+ Knowledge of governmental regulations, including USDA licensure and Animal Welfare Act.
+ Must be physically capable of handling, examining, and treating animals of all species.

**Job Summary**
A Clinical Veterinarian II is responsible for providing consultation, oversight, and direct support of veterinary care activities for all animals used by Charles River Laboratories; supporting the IACUC to ensure compliance with animal welfare standards and regulations by AAALAC, Int., USDA, and PHS-OLAW; and supporting the evaluation of test article effects by performing examinations and making assessments to interpret study effects on animals.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
+ Oversee daily animal health assessment program including both routine stock and study examinations which support research.
+ Respond to requests for veterinary care, planned or emergency, by examining the animal, communicating with staff, and following the case until resolution, and address veterinary concerns.
+ May perform surgical support and provide anesthesia, surgical and analgesic technical expertise/advice.
+ Functions as departmental representative for interdepartmental communications and initiatives as required.
+ Supports and contributes to occupational health and safety program.
+ Support the overall training program for veterinary techniques/treatments performed by veterinary technicians/technical staff and ensure that training is properly documented and regularly updated. Contributes to training others in research animal techniques and other aspects of vivarium operations.
+ May assist in the development of operating objectives and Standard Operating Procedures (SOP's).
+ May serve as a full or ad-hoc member of the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC), assisting in protocol review and other efforts as identified.
+ Develop understanding of animal welfare regulations and standards and their application.
+ Development of understanding of the 3Rs and considers where refinements may be applied within the animal care program. Works with cross-site team members to implement refinements.
+ In consultation with the Study Director is a contact for Sponsor discussion on veterinary care and animal responses to the test article as well as review study plans as needed.
+ Actively engages with internal and external customers and demonstrates understanding of customers' needs, requirements, and expectations.

**Job Qualifications**
+ **Education:** DVM or equivalent degree required
+ **Experience:** 2+ years of experience in veterinary medicine required; experience in laboratory animal medicine or relevant area/education preferred
+ Licensure to practice veterinary medicine in at least 1 U.S. state required
+ An equivalent combination of education and experience may be accepted as a satisfactory substitute for the specific education and experience listed above
+ Must be able to obtain a veterinary license, controlled substances license, and USDA accreditation in state of employment.
+ Basic familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite
+ Computer skills, commensurate with Essential Functions and including ability to learn a validated system
+ Ability to work extended hours beyond normal work schedule to include, but not limited to, evenings, weekends, extended shifts and/or extra shifts, sometimes on short notice.

Compensation Data
The starting salary for this opportunity is $155,000 USD. Please note that salaries vary within the range based on factors including, but not limited to, experience, skills, education, certifications, and location.

Responsible for providing professional veterinary services and assisting with the management of all phases of health care for the animal colony.

* Provide clinical care for the animal colony.
* Perform veterinary rounds as scheduled, and provide clinical care and preventive medicine support.

* Make recommendations and assist in establishing and enhancing veterinary and animal care standards.
