How you will make an Impact (Job Summary)

Under the direction of the Machine Shop Manager, the Machinist/CNC Programmer produces machined parts by loading, unloading, and operating a computer numerical control (CNC) machine or manual machines. As the Machinist/CNC Programmer, you will develop CNC programs and technical documentation for production purposes. Operator/Programmer will be expected to maintain quality and safety standard, keep accurate records, and maintain equipment and supplies.

What you can expect in this role (Job Responsibilities)

While each day brings new opportunities at SPX, your core responsibilities will be:

1. Training and Development:
  • Create instructions and setup sheets for operators.
  • Write programs and modify existing ones for increased efficiency.
  • Participate in educational opportunities; read technical publications.

2. Technical and Programming:
  • Review 3D CAD Models and blueprints.
  • Make calculations for programming, tooling, and material required.
  • Analyze job orders and perform necessary calculations.
  • Analyze and select feeds and speeds for programs.
  • Make improvements to complex setups and for inefficient programs.
  • Simplify tooling selection for operators and increase productivity for the team.
  • Prepare geometric layout of designs and toolpaths using proper software. Nesting.
  • Determine the sequence of operations in a program.
  • Choose cutting tools that will be needed.

3. Quality Assurance:
  • Check completed programs by running simulations or tests.
  • Evaluate all completed designs to validate their functions and ensure they successfully reduce time and money for the company.
  • Monitor all programs to make sure they follow blueprint specifications and safely and successfully complete the task.
  • Verify settings by measuring positions, first-run part, and sample workpieces, adhering to defined quality standards.
  • Maintain specifications by observing drilling, grooving, and cutting, including turning, facing, knurling and thread chasing operations; taking measurements, detecting malfunctions, troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes as trained.

4. Technical Operations:
  • Produce parts as directed by schedule or Lead person.
  • Safely operate other machine tools, attachments, collets, bushings, stops, and stock pushers and indicating vises as trained and monitored by Lead person.
  • Follow instructions as delivered by Lead person, work orders, blueprints, materials, specifications, and locations of surfaces.

5. Safety and Compliance:
  • Maintain safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
  • Safely operate mills and lathes by following instructions, including zero and reference points, including basic math.
  • Safely operate other machine tools, attachments, collets, bushings, stops, and stock pushers and indicating vises as trained and monitored by Lead person.

6. Documentation and Communication:
  • Maintain continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating. Actions, irregularities, and continuing needs.
  • Maintain remanent inventory.
  • Communicate with operators who will be running the programs.
  • Document actions by completing production and quality logs.
  • Update job knowledge by participating in educational opportunities; reading technical publications.
  • Accomplish organizational goals by accepting ownership for accomplishing new and different requests; exploring opportunities to add value to job accomplishments.

  • Proficient in reading and interpreting blueprint designs, with the ability to adapt to a fast-paced environment.
  • Strong proficiency in Vericut and Mastercam, as well as Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Project, and Outlook).
  • Experience with SAP and Teamcenter is desired. Extensive experience with computer modeling software.

  • Willingness to work occasional overtime to support client outages, with strong project management capabilities and a team player attitude. Ability to interpret shop instructions and manufacturing drawings, with a teachable attitude and willingness to learn. Title: CNC Programmer / Machinist

Reports to : Tool and Die Supervisor

Job Purpose : Program, qualify, and produce machined parts using CNC Mills, CNC Lathes, Wire EDM machines, and manual milling and grinding equipment.

Key Responsibilities and Accountabilities
  • Create, save and maintain CNC programs using MasterCAM software from Auto-Cad or step files.
  • Create, save, and maintain working drawings and files.
  • Set up one-off and/or production jobs to run for self and others.
  • Maintain quality standards and tolerances.
  • Keep records as directed in work orders for time and materials.
  • Maintain equipment per OEM and PSG requirements.
  • Maintain supplies.
  • Set up and operate standard milling machine, lathe, drill press, grinder and other machine tools as directed under general supervision.
  • Work directly with engineering to design and manufacture tooling, fixtures, and production parts.
  • Follow all OSHA and internal safety standards.
  • Perform other duties as required or assigned by supervisor.

Qualifications
  • High School Diploma, GED, or equivalent work experience.
  • 5 years minimum verifiable machinist experience and/or Technical Diploma.
  • Ability to program, qualify, and run CNC equipment.
  • Ability to perform standard shop computations (math).
  • Ability to read schematics (blue prints), engineering drawings, and technical manuals.
  • Ability to perform basic maintenance of equipment.
  • Ability to utilize heat treat equipment.
  • Ability to read, understand, follow and enforce safety procedures.
  • Ability to make administrative/procedural decisions and judgments as well as work within a team environment.

CNC Programmer using MasterCam 2023 or newer software. Complex 3D parts for the Aerospace R&D industry. Must be proficient in 3, 4 & 5-axis programming. Machining experience is a plus. Must be able to create programs, operator instructions, and work hand-in-hand with engineering and the machine shop.

The ideal candidate has 5+ years' experience, is driven to succeed, interested in aerospace, and capable of analyzing a part to create an accurate and efficient program. DoD Secret Clearance is preferred but not mandatory; willing to apply for one if not held. US Citizen required.

CNC Programmer Position

The CNC Programmer position will partner with Manufacturing Engineering and Quality teams to create and/or modify CNC programs for multi-axis machine tools, CMMs, and other equipment. The CNC programmer should have experience in the manufacturing of Aerospace hardware, tool selection, fixture design and GD&T.

Roles and Responsibilities:

  • Define and control production process including tooling and equipment. Validate design specifications and shop floor application of new product, tools, or equipment. Includes Manufacturing Engineers.
  • Developing in-depth knowledge of a technical discipline. Uses prior experience and acquired technical expertise to execute policy/strategy.
  • In-depth understanding of key business drivers; uses this understanding to accomplish own work. In-depth understanding of how work of own team integrates with other teams and contributes to the area.
  • Uses some level of judgment and has ability to propose different solutions outside of set parameters but with guidance. Uses prior experience and on-the-job training to solve straightforward tasks. Has access to technical skills and analytic thinking required to solve problems. May use multiple internal sources outside of own team to arrive at decisions.
  • A job at this level is likely to be an individual contributor with proven interpersonal skills or an early people leader who can hire and develop talent. Provides informal guidance to new team members

Required Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree from an accredited college or university (or a high school diploma/GED with a minimum of 4 years manufacturing experience; All manufacturing experience must be specifically machining, assembly, machine repair or inspection experience) and a minimum of 3 years Manufacturing Experience.

Desired Characteristics:

  • Aerospace Manufacturing experience
  • Experience in tooling and fixturing design and working with tooling vendors
  • Extensive experience with programming and operating multi axis mill and lathe CNC (and manual) machines.
  • NC programming experience (APT, UG, or other structured systems.)
  • Proficient in shop mathematic i.e. geometry and trigonometry, blueprint reading, geometric dimensioning, and tolerances.
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision and direction - self-starter.
  • Ability to interface with various levels of management (i.e., Design Engineering and Project) and shop floor workforce.
  • Ability to maintain relationships that facilitate task accomplishment; to cooperate and resolve conflicts; to recognize needs and be sensitive of others.
  • 5+ years of CNC programming experience (including NX).
  • Strong oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated leadership in program/project management, including planning, execution, and documentation.
  • Established skills in analyzing and resolving problems, with a focus on driving results.
  • Humble: respectful, receptive, agile, eager to learn.
