**Position Summary**
At Stony Brook Medicine, the Coding Education will develop and provide educational programs as they relate to ICD-10 CM and ICD-10 PCS coding for new and existing staff and collaborate with department management in setting goals related to educational activities for all coders.
**Duties of a Coding Educator** **may include the following but are not limited to:**
+ Responsible for evaluating, designing, coordinating and delivering comprehensive training and education for new and existing staff.
+ Development of ICD-10-CM and ICD-10 PCS education training for new employees.
+ Assess and provide feedback to each coder on their work performed.
+ Development of reinforcement training for existing staff in collaboration with department management.
+ Provide educational sessions to new and existing staff based on results of each coders performance
+ Perform coding audits and validation by reviewing medical records for correct ICD-10-CM and ICD-10 PCS coding. Compile and communicate results of the audits to the appropriate managers.
+ Prepare training and presentations on various topics, such as the annual ICD-10 and ICD-10 PCS updates, any other coding updates throughout the year including Quarterly Coding Clinic reviews.
+ Research updated coding information, rules, laws and statutes for all payers and government entities. Responsible to keep abreast of and hold extensive knowledge of government regulations related to coding and applicable reimbursement laws and regulations required.
+ Ensure the Coding Staff has updated resources on an ongoing basis.
+ Provide education to the Clinical Documentation Integrity (CDI) staff on a brief History of Coding.
+ Provide education to the CDI staff on ICD-10 CM & ICD-10 PCS book contents, organization and how to use the books.
+ Provide education to the CDI staff on how to identify Major Comorbidities and Chronic Comorbidities in ICD-10 CM books
+ Provide education to the CDI staff on the Inpatient Prospective Payment System.

**Qualifications**
**Required Qualifications:** Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management (HIM) or related field. At least 6 years of experience with ICD-10 CM and ICD-10 PCS coding. RHIA,RHIT, and/or CCS certification. Demonstrated proficiency in medical terminology. Strong organizational and written communication skills.

Trains new Coding Specialist(s), Technician(s), and Associate(s). Promotes the Health System’s guest relations’ policy. Complies with all Federal, State, local and accrediting bodies’ regulations and protocols. Accrediting bodies include, but not limited to, the Centers for Medicare and Medicaid Services (CMS), Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality (AHRQ), National Committee for Quality Assurance (NCQA) that promotes Healthcare Effectiveness Data and Information Set (HEDIS) metrics, Utilization Review Accreditation Commission (URAC), and the Joint Commission (TJC).

EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE
Associate’s Degree is required; Associate’s degree in Health Information Management and/or Bachelor’s degree is preferred. Completion of a coding program is required. (Note: Completion of a coding program from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or American Association of Professional Coders (AAPCS) will be accepted. Completion of a coding program from other licensing bodies shall be accepted on a case by case basis and upon managerial discretion, with the approval of the Director of Revenue Integrity-Coding.) At least five (5) years of coding experience in professional services, hospital services, or a combination of both is required for external applicants. At least four (4) years of pro-fee, outpatient/ambulatory, and inpatient coding experience is required for internal applicants. LICENSURE/CERTIFICATION

(Note: Valid credential(s) from the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and/or American Association of Professional Coders (AAPC) will be accepted. Duties:

  • Communicates and interacts positively and professionally throughout all levels of the organization, and with external customers. Consistently demonstrates the ability to communicate with strong analytical, problem solving and critical thinking skills.
  • Provides onsite and remote quality assurance reviews/audits with appropriate compliance with governmental and payer regulations.
  • Provides and monitors instructions/education provided to Providers, Coding, Risk, CDI, and Quality team members involved with the coding processes.
  • Implements Coding Education programs for professional and facility Service lines, including ongoing assessment, metrics and dashboards.
  • Prepares departmental coding and denial progress reports.
  • Performs other related duties as assigned.
