Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact - advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI - rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues. Software Engineer - Compute Market

Job Viewed
Job Description
Compute is a commodity. We think people should buy it like one.
Startups shouldn't be forced to buy a year's worth of compute time in order to get market rate and compute providers shouldn't go bankrupt because they can't fully book their clusters.
At SF Compute, our goal is to solve this issue the same way this was solved for every other commodity - by building a venue where compute contracts are traded in real-time and by bringing a new kind of participant into the supply chain, traders.
If we succeed, buyers will be able to get a good price for any order, whether it's 32 H100s for a month or 8,000 H100s for an hour, and sellers will instantly book out their clusters because traders will speculatively buy them, for a spread. Every FLOP will flow through us somewhere in the supply chain. What Brent is for oil, we will be for compute.
About the Role
As an engineer working on our compute market, you'll build software that buys, sells, and prices cutting-edge HPC hardware worth billions of dollars. You'll be a critical part of the company, working closely together with a small team of extremely competent engineers on systems that move tens of millions of GPU-hours per day.
Projects you might work on include.
- Optimizing our surplus-maximizing shape-packing solver
- Creating automated strategies for compute providers to sell their clusters
- Scaling our quoting APIs to thousands of orders per second
- Inventing mechanisms for auctions for a new asset class with unique constraints
- Designing a futures contract that allows the market to hedge risk on DC buildouts
- You're a talented, high-agency engineer who likes to ship fast
- You have experience building fault-tolerant systems where correctness is critical
- You appreciate the value of extensive testing and good documentation
- You're excited by the rare chance to financialize a new commodity
- Are comfortable working in Rust
- Have previously worked at or founded a startup
- Have built systems that manage other people's money
- Have some background in finance, trading, bespoke marketplaces, or combinatorial optimization
Generous equity grant
Team members are offered a competitive salary along with equity in the company
Visa Sponsorships
Yes, we sponsor visas and work permits
Retirement matching
We match 401(k) plans up to 4%
Medical, dental & vision
We offer competitive medical, dental, vision insurance for employees and dependents and cover 100% of premiums
Time off
We offer unlimited paid time off as well as 10+ observed holidays
Parental leave
We offer biological, adoptive, and foster parents paid time off to spend quality time with family
Daily lunch
We cover lunch daily for employees
Unlimited office book budget
You can buy as many books for the office as you want
The San Francisco Compute Company is committed to maintaining a workplace free from discrimination and harassment.
We make employment decisions based on business needs, job requirements, and individual qualifications, without regard to race, color, religion, belief, national origin, social or ethical origin, age, physical, mental, or sensory disability, sexual orientation, gender identity or expression, marital status, civil union or domestic partnership status, past or present military service, HIV status, family medical history or genetic information, family or parental status including pregnancy, or any other status protected by law.
We welcome the opportunity to consider qualified applicants with prior arrest or conviction records. Our commitment to diversity includes hiring talented individuals regardless of their criminal history, in accordance with local, state, and federal laws, including San Francisco's Fair Chance Ordinance and California's ban-the-box laws.

Compute Infrastructure Strategy Lead

Job Description
About the Team
The Industrial Compute team builds and operates the infrastructure behind OpenAI's research and products. We design for scale, performance, and adaptability-bridging physical and logical layers so frontier workloads run efficiently across a global footprint.
In recent months, this team enabled large scale compute systems, built foundational network infrastructure, partnered with engineering to unlock major compute expansions, and worked with compute, inference, and storage systems engineering to materially lower serving cost while improving performance.
Our mandate spans power, compute, network, manufacturing and assembly, operations, scheduling and orchestration, and the broader ecosystem to enable OpenAI's next generation of systems.
About the Role
Your charter: deliver step-function improvements in cost, capability, capacity, reliability, and time-to-ready across OpenAI's infrastructure and compute platform. You'll take on high-leverage initiatives spanning compute, storage, networking, and systems-cut through complexity quickly, pinpoint leverage points, make clear calls, and drive the changes needed to unlock scale. You'll work fluidly across teams-engineering, capacity planning, research, infra, product, finance, and business development-to align the technical, operational, and commercial pieces needed to make these bets real.
Some workstreams will be strategic and industry-shifting; others will be tactical so we can ship systems sooner than otherwise possible. Near-term focus may include optimizing storage direction and rollout, improving accelerator utilization, advancing interconnect approaches to lower latency and cost, and accelerating site readiness.
This role is based in San Francisco, CA. We use a hybrid work model of three days in the office per week and offer relocation assistance to new employees.
In this role you will:
Own cross-stack programs end-to-end: define the problem, design the approach, prove it quickly, and carry the result into production.
Drive rapid clarity on goals, criteria, risks, metrics for complex technical problems without adding heavy process.
Work closely with engineering, operations, and (when needed) finance, research, product, and external vendors to align decisions and deliver useful infrastructure at massive scale.
Own outcomes end-to-end, and move fast to validate approaches-using bounded pilots when useful-while balancing total cost, performance, and operability.
Collaborate with engineering to incubate and execute on the technical decisions that unlock scale.
You might thrive in this role if you:
Have deep technical experience (infrastructure / systems engineering, TPM, or product) and move comfortably between system detail and program execution.
Have led ambiguous, cross-functional infrastructure work to tangible outcomes without waiting for perfect information.
Communicate clearly, align partners, and make sound calls on cost, performance, and operability.
Prefer measured proofs and execution over slideware and enjoy switching between strategy and hands-on work to fully own projects end-end.
