About the job Structural Engineer/Construction Engineer

As a Structural Engineer, your design-build tasks will include Bridge erection & demolition, Cofferdam design, Critical crane lifts, Erection sequencing & staged construction analysis, Hoisting and jacking, Deep foundations and dewatering, Excavation support, Marine engineering, Pile drive analysis, Soil anchoring design, Micro/ mini/ rock-socket piles design, Falsework design, Temporary bridge & trestle, Drafting and CAD, Working surface design, On-site engineering support. This is a full-time position for an individual working out of our Plantsville office in Connecticut. There is no remote option. Salary range will depend upon experience.

Qualifications:
Experience with temporary structures and/or construction engineering
Accredited Bachelor of Science degree in Civil or Structural Engineering; Masters degree or greater in Structural Engineering is preferred
5 -10 years of relevant engineering experience
Professional Engineer licensure or eligibility within the United States
Strong all-around academic knowledge of structural engineering
Experience with engineering design software will be an advantage; this includes AutoCAD, BlueBeam, Civil 3D, Finite Element Analysis Software
Experience with working in a team setting
Excellent communication skills, both oral and written, with individuals at all levels of the organization
Strong interpersonal skills and an ability to work in a multi-disciplinary team environment
Ability to organize and handle multiple project assignments
Ability to freely access all points of a construction site in wide-ranging climates and environments

Responsibilities:
Develop drawings and calculations for temporary works and construction methods, including:
Heavy lift plans (site logistics, equipment selection, geometry/feasibility studies, design of custom rigging and lifting devices, hoisting and jacking systems, custom tools, and crane pad / working surface designs)
Erection procedures or planned sequences related to construction or demolition operations
Evaluation of existing structures for construction loads and/or demolition planning
Structural analysis to ensure stability during the temporary condition of new bridges, viaducts, buildings, tunnels, and other structures (for example, construction staging, design of temporary falsework systems, and rebar cage hoisting and support)
Support of excavation systems or cofferdams for construction below-grade
Temporary bridges, trestles, work platforms, fall protection systems, formwork, and other features relating to our construction operations
Perform and/or review others calculations and design drawings according to industry codes, standards, additional client design criteria, and structural theories
Ensure quality and accuracy of the design deliverables
Help to identify design risks and assist with risk mitigation planning Assist in Project Management and Estimators (budgets, schedules, quality control, and coordination/communication with clients)
Other responsibilities include Project on-site design engineering support, on-site inspections, training and mentoring E.I.T.s, etc.

• Support construction activities by planning, organizing and implementing project engineering & project controls tasks as required for successful project execution. • Field Coordination & Project Support:
  • Assist in daily site operations, including subcontractor coordination, logistics planning, and quality control.
  • Monitor and track construction progress, materials deliveries, and compliance with project schedules.
  • Conduct field walks and inspections with Superintendent and QA/QC personnel.
• Document Control & Reporting:
  • Manage construction documentation including RFIs, submittals, daily reports, meeting minutes, and punch lists.
  • Ensure accurate distribution of updated drawings, specifications, and change directives to field staff and subcontractors.
  • Maintain Procore or equivalent project management system with up-to-date logs and records.
• Procurement & Scheduling:
  • Coordinate with the office team to ensure timely procurement and delivery of materials and equipment.
  • Assist with updating look-ahead schedules and tracking critical path items with input from the Superintendent and PM.
• Cost Tracking & Change Management:
  • Support the processing of change orders, field tickets, and subcontractor invoicing.
  • Verify quantities and materials used against budgets and purchase orders.
• Compliance & Safety:
  • Help enforce site safety protocols and maintain OSHA compliance.
  • Ensure construction activities comply with state and local building codes, environmental regulations, and affordable housing program requirements.
• Additional responsibilities as assigned.

• Thorough understanding of building systems, sequencing, and construction means and methods across residential projects, and safety regulations (OSHA certification required).
• Ability to read and interpret construction drawings, specifications, shop drawings, and contracts.
• Familiarity with construction schedules (CPM, Gantt), project phasing, and cost tracking, and working knowledge of subcontracts, scopes of work, change orders, and progress billing.
• Excellent communication, organizational, and teamwork skills.
• Intermediate to advanced computer literacy, with a thorough understanding of Google Workspace and MS Office, as well as familiarity with project management and construction software (e.g. Autodesk Construction Cloud, Bluebeam, MS Project, or similar).
• Strong written and verbal communication skills (in English), allowing for clear and succinct communication in a variety of settings (phone, video, in-person, email), and with people of various backgrounds and levels, both internally and externally.
• Ability to successfully interface and build strong cross-functional relationships with both internal team members and external partners, finding common ground and solving problems for the good of all.

• Ability to climb stairs, ladders, or scaffolding to access elevated areas (depending on the site).

• Bachelors degree in Construction Management, Civil Engineering, Architecture, or a related field.
• Minimum 2 years of field-based experience working on multifamily or commercial construction projects (internships included).
• Familiarity with affordable housing construction preferred; exposure to LIHTC or public funding requirements is a plus.
• OSHA 30 certification (or ability to obtain within the first 30 days).
• Experience with Prevailing Wage documentation and public agency reporting.
• Bilingual (English/Spanish) is a plus.

Description

• As the construction project engineer you will:
• Assisting in the overall project management, from pre-construction through project closeout.
• Collaborating with the project team, including the Project Manager, Superintendent, and subcontractors, to ensure project milestones are met.
• Preparing and reviewing project documentation, including contracts, drawings, and specifications.
• Conducting regular site visits to monitor project progress, quality control, and adherence to safety regulations.
• Coordinating with suppliers and subcontractors to ensure timely delivery of materials and equipment.
• Assisting in the management of project budgets, cost tracking, and change orders.
• Conducting thorough project inspections and documenting deficiencies.

Profile

• A minimum of 2 years of experience in the construction industry as a construction project engineer
• Familiarity with commercial construction practices and processes (preferred but not required).
