Construction Engineer – Surface Transportation

Hiring Site: Aurora/Rockford, IL

Salary Range: $80,000 - $120,000

Crawford, Murphy & Tilly, Inc. (CMT) is a full-service consulting firm focused on four primary markets: Aviation, Surface Transportation, Water Resources, and Building & Site Services. CMT provides planning, environmental, design, and construction observation phase services on projects that range from simple to complex. CMT seeks to fill a full-time position and provide an opportunity to join our Surface Transportation as a Construction Engineer. The selected candidates will have demonstrated leadership qualities, the ability to work as a team member or independently, and the desire to learn new skills and areas of expertise.

General Assignments:

• Perform and lead on-site construction inspection, observation, and documentation services including the supervising and directing of junior staff in support of project managers
• Serve as the engineer’s on-site liaison with the contractor and client and assist the client when required for proper execution of the work
• Prepare, maintain, and distribute required construction documentation including daily reports, pay estimates, change orders, shop drawings, material submittals, progress schedules, project correspondence, testing results, and record drawings in accordance with client and company procedures
• Secondary assignments may include assistance with planning and design of civil & transportation projects including drafting, surveying, materials testing, or other duties as assigned
• Typical projects require the understanding and implementation of construction documents (plans & specifications) including horizontal and vertical layout, site development, grading, drainage, asphalt & concrete paving, pavement marking, signage, erosion control, coordination with other disciplines, water & sanitary utilities, quantity takeoffs, cost estimates, and construction scheduling

Position Requirements:

• Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering, Construction Management, or a related field is desired; Equivalent experience in lieu of a degree will be considered

• 4 - 10 years of experience required.
• Possess general knowledge and understanding of the construction of transportation, site development, and civil infrastructure projects including the ability to clarify and interpret construction documents

• Previous construction experience, or internship experience, is preferred but not required

• The ability to complete training classes required by clients including Quality Management Training classes for HMA, PCC, and aggregates
• Working knowledge of Microsoft Office products and AutoCAD or MicroStation for use in civil & site design projects

• Ability to manage personnel and delegate tasks
• Ability to work independently and able to effectively manage time and work on multiple projects
• Must be willing to accept out of town travel assignments and work overtime to meet construction project demands
• Successful completion of a security background check which requires employment history, verification, and criminal history records checks (if applicable) of individuals applying for security badges
• Acceptable driving record and valid driver’s license with access to transportation
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills required

Job Description

The AECOM team is actively seeking a highly motivated Wisconsin Construction Project Leader, with openings in the Milwaukee, Middleton, and Stevens Point, Wisconsin offices. The Construction Project Leader will oversee a wide variety of highway, bridge, and municipal projects for the Wisconsin Department of Transportation (WisDOT) and local clients. The Wisconsin Construction Project Leader will have a background in the Construction Management/Construction Engineering & Inspection (CM/CEI) industry. They will directly oversee their projects and team members in their local WisDOT Region. They will provide strategic planning and delivery on key project needs and initiatives. AECOM is seeking a Construction Engineer II experienced with water related projects for an opening in our Dallas, TX office. In this role you'll have the opportunity to work on Water projects that improve and enhance the local communities water supply. Responsibilities for this position may include but are not limited to:

• ?Support the Project Construction Manager with administration of the Construction Management processes and procedures.

• Facilitate and coordinate the review of construction submittals, shop drawing, Requests for Information, and Applications for Payment.

• Support the project team with execution of construction project progress meetings and support development of progress meeting documentation.

• Support the project team with maintenance of as-built record drawings and red-line drawings.

• Manage the development and turnover of Operation & Maintenance Manuals, spare parts, and warranties as part of construction close-out phase.

• Support the project team with change management activities, including performing material take-offs, support preparation of cost estimates, and preparation of change order documentation.

• Support the Quality Assurance Inspection team and perform field investigations and field inspections if necessary.

• Support the project team with resolution of field issues and field related project changes.

• Reviews manpower, material, equipment requirements with others as designated by supervising superintendent.

• Assists with compliance of safety program that creates a safe and health work environment through the job site and adheres to OSHA safety and record keeping requirements.

• Prepares reports, as required, and keeps supervisors informed on progress of overall assigned activities.

• Uses current construction management system to perform record-keeping tasks including, composing daily diaries, maintaining project logs and retrieving RFIs, submittal logs and agreements.

• Provides assistance to construction scheduling issues.

• Contribute to building good communications between field management, project management, estimators, design engineers, contractors, subcontractors, and other project stakeholders to ensure construction complies with plans, specifications and company quality standards and that the project is completed on time and within budget.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements:

• BA/BS + 2 years of relevant experience or demonstrated equivalency of experience and/or education.

Preferred Qualifications:

• 4+ years of field experience related to water projects.

• Have experience understanding Contract Documents and Drawings, and have an initial understanding of Contract Administration processes and procedures.

• Monitor construction of highways, bridges, buildings, utilities, and other various types of infrastructure.
• Perform field testing on various construction materials.
• Prepare daily work reports.
• Communicate with the project team throughout the construction process.

• Previous construction background preferred
• MDOT experience preferred
• Strong attention to detail, excellent analytical/judgment capabilities, and ability to work independently or on a team
