Construction Materials Technician
Job Description
As a Construction Materials Technician, you will be responsible for field and/or laboratory testing, construction observation, and inspection of construction materials including soils, aggregates, concrete, asphalt, and steel. Your role will involve communicating test results clearly and concisely with appropriate individuals, tabulating and calculating laboratory results, and preparing field reports. + Valid driver's license with an acceptable violation history.
Work Environment
The work schedule depends on the time of year, typically requiring 45-55 hours per week. The usual working hours are from 7:30 AM to 5 or 6 PM, with a rotation for Saturdays, though availability to work every Saturday if needed is required. During the slower period of December to March, the hours are Monday to Friday from 8 AM to 4:30 or 5 PM.

Responsibilities
+ Perform on-site testing of construction materials like soil, concrete, asphalt, and aggregates.
+ Collect samples during construction activities such as concrete pours and soil compaction.
+ Analyze material samples in a lab to ensure they meet project specifications and industry standards.
+ Conduct common tests including compressive strength of concrete, soil gradation, and asphalt content.
+ Inspect construction practices to verify compliance with engineering plans and specifications.
+ Document test results and observations in detailed reports for engineers, contractors, and clients.
+ Ensure materials and construction methods comply with local building codes, DOT standards, and project requirements.
+ Identify potential issues early to prevent structural failures or costly rework.
Essential Skills
+ Experience in construction materials testing.
+ Proficiency with computers and digital reporting tools.
+ Strong foundational skills in math and science.
+ Valid driver's license with a clean driving record.
+ Ability to successfully pass a record check, physical exam, and drug/alcohol screening.
+ Flexibility to work extended hours and weekends as project demands require.
+ Positive attitude, strong attention to detail, and commitment to quality.
+ Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
+ Ability to accurately and legibly complete required documentation.
+ Reliable transportation and consistent punctuality.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
+ Nuclear Safety Certification (preferred but not required).
+ ACI Concrete Field Testing Technician - Grade I (preferred but not required).
+ ACI Laboratory Testing Technician - Grade I (preferred but not required).
+ ACI Strength Testing Technician (preferred but not required).
+ Asphalt Roadway Technician (preferred but not required).
+ Asphalt Laboratory Technician (preferred but not required).
Work Environment
This position operates on a Monday through Friday schedule, from 8:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Mornings typically begin in the lab, followed by site visits. The role requires physical activity, including pushing a wheelbarrow loaded with concrete across uneven terrain, lifting up to 50 lbs, and navigating construction sites. Safety equipment and adherence to safety protocols are essential.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $18.00 - $25.00/hr.
