Role Description

We are seeking an Engineering Drafter to support our growing team on environmental and civil engineering projects in the New York City and Northern New Jersey region. This hybrid role allows for both on-site and remote work.


The ideal candidate will assist with preparing engineering drawings and documentation related to site development, environmental compliance, and construction oversight. Candidates with experience in AutoCAD Civil 3D and a background in drafting for civil or environmental projects will be given preference.


Responsibilities

  • Prepare draft engineering drawings, maps, and site plans using AutoCAD Civil 3D .
  • Assist in site design, permitting, and compliance documentation for civil and environmental projects.
  • Support project managers with technical documentation such as site plans, construction progress reports, and regulatory submittals.
  • Organize and maintain project files, revisions, and as-built drawings .
  • Coordinate with engineers and team members to ensure drawings meet project specifications and regulatory requirements.
  • Occasionally assist with field visits to collect data or verify site conditions.


Qualifications

  • Associate degree or technical certification in drafting, CAD design, civil engineering, environmental engineering, civil engineering technology, or a related field (or equivalent work experience).
  • Proficiency in AutoCAD Civil 3D and HEC RAS is required.
  • Experience with Microstation and/or ArcGIS mapping software is a plus.
  • 3+ years of experience in drafting for civil engineering, environmental, or construction projects preferred.
  • Ability to interpret and prepare site plans, grading plans, stormwater report calculation support, and construction drawings .
  • Strong attention to detail and ability to work independently.
  • Effective communication skills for collaborating with Envicon engineers and project managers .


Preferred but Not Required

  • Experience with environmental compliance projects (e.g., NYSDEC, NJDEP, NYCDEP).
  • Familiarity with stormwater and erosion control plans, site plan development, and preparation of engineering plans from conceptual site plans to record of construction drawing development.


Compensation & Schedule

  • Hourly Rate: $30 - $40 per hour (based on experience).
  • Schedule: 40 hours per week, with flexible hours.
  • Overtime: Available with prior manager approval.
  • Hybrid Work: Remote work is possible, but some on-site presence may be required.

What your day-to-day looks like:
  • Prepare engineering documentation that is complete, accurate, and compatible with established standards. Incorporate manufacturing and applicable design principles into design with basic guidance from engineers.
  • Create complete work packages, while only being provided basic concepts and desired results of equipment. Assist engineers in small projects with limited direction.
  • Manage and maintain Western Zirconium's engineering documents in the established document storage working procedure and/or responsibility assigned:
  • Provide technical assistance, instructions, and peer checks for lower classified drafters. Coordinate work on large projects; provide work load supervision in the absence of immediate supervisor.
  • Prepare drawings provided from engineer sketches.
  • Incorporate Red-Line marks as provided from engineers.
  • Create accurate "As-Built" drawings by gathering information from existing drawings, and equipment, using standard measuring tools.
Self Check completeness and accuracy of work.
  • Maintain drafting requests and drawings in document management system (Enovia).
  • Incorporate appropriate detailed manufacturing data into design.
  • Incorporate applicable design principles to establish missing information to complete drawings, including basic design calculations with the guidance of an engineer.
  • Obtain and incorporate customer input (Maintenance, Operators, etc.) into design.
  • Complete design of complex equipment with only being provided basic concept and desired results.
  • Check drawings to ensure the release of a quality product in accordance with established standards, including:
  • Revision level, title block and parameters, drawing number, format standards.
  • Notes and bill-of-materials for completeness, clarity and accuracy.
  • All dimensions and tolerances for accuracy, completeness, form, fit and function.
  • Continuity and uniformity between related drawings.
  • Return drawings for correction to originating drafter, explain deficiency and corrective action required and ensure appropriate corrections are made.
  • Organize and lead User group meetings with like drafters.
  • Encourage use of standards.
  • Share knowledge of drafting software.
  • Improve consistency of drawings.
  • Plan training opportunities.
  • Obtain a working knowledge of all job-related software used by plant.
What we'd like to see from you:
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Two (2) years in industrial drafting from a vocational or technical school, specializing in mechanical, civil, electrical or instrumentation. Additional discipline specific courses teaching advanced design concepts, or have industrial discipline specific experience that utilized advanced design concepts.
  • Six (6) years of on-the-job drafting/design utilizing Microsoft Office and Autodesk software (AutoCAD / Inventor). A working knowledge of engineering practice and application of industry codes/standards in the electrical / chemical / mechanical industries.
  • Proficient using 2D & 3D Autodesk software or Solid Works 3D
  • Use ISA Standards to develop new P&IDs, Field Verified (as-built) P&IDs and loop diagrams.
  • With minimal supervision, design mechanical devices using ANSI, ASME, OSHA and other associated Standards
  • Size hydraulic and air components such as cylinders, motors, valves, pumps, etc to meet design criteria
  • Specify moving components such as bearings, gearboxes, motors etc for load, horsepower, tolerance, duty rating, service factor, with appropriate installation
  • Verify drawings to ensure performance, accuracy, and compatibility with established standards
  • Estimate and schedule drafting work

Position Description

The overall duties of a Drafting Coordinator Include:

  • Coordinate all design and drafting functions for assigned projects
  • Track assigned jobs and coordinate schedules with Drafting Manager, Plant Scheduler, and Project Manager
  • Act as the primary liaison between the customer and internal Metromont departments to resolve issues concerning drawings, repair details, material requisitions, etc.

Essential Responsibilities:
+ Mechanical Drafting using current generation AutoCAD software.
+ Generate, modify, and organize general arrangement and physical outline drawings accurately and on time for customer approval and manufacture of Circuit Breaker products.
+ CAD file conversions as needed.
+ Utilize ProEngineer to generate 3D models for customer circuit breakers upon request.
+ Review mechanical and electrical drawing packages for technical and typographical errors.
+ Prepare approval / as-built drawing packages, CT curves, and test reports for customer submittal.
+ Manage and maintain all circuit breaker engineering drawing files within document management system (EDMATS).
+ Prepare device tag files for procurement by planning team.
+ Update order tracking record database with accurate data.
+ Performs other duties as necessary or assigned.
+ Follows USC factory and GE Grid Solutions specifications as well as applicable national and international standards.
+ Assists Production, Industrialization, Sourcing and Quality departments as required.
**Required Qualifications:**
+ Associate's degree or equivalent from two-year college or technical school for Drafting, 3D Modeling, or Mechanical Design
+ Minimum 1 year experience in mechanical CAD software (AutoCAD, SolidWorks, Pro-E)
Desired Characteristics:
+ Experience in the field of power distribution and transmission is a plus
+ Strong technical background
+ Ability to work and manage projects autonomously with little oversight
+ Ability to work successfully in cross-functional teams
+ Strong written and oral communication skills
