As a Conventional Machinist you will be performing moderately complex assignments in support of our repair and maintenance of OEM equipment. Machinists will be required to perform a variety of related tasks including layout, set up, operating and making tool adjustments for various types of manual machine shop equipment.

Your Challenges
- Requires limited supervision/oversight, has experience in the trade and can perform all work required as an Inside Machinist
- Must have the ability to manufacture complex components from stock or modify parts in accordance with all drawing requirements
- Must be able to perform the set up and operation of all types of machines (lathes, mills, grinders, saws, etc.) and hand tools used in the trade as well as the ability to use all precision measuring instruments such as outside diameter and inside diameter micrometers, height gauges, depth gauges, calipers, verniers, lay-out tools and possess the ability to accurately record readings and measurements
- Advanced proficiency in reading complex blueprints, drawings, manuals, technical work documents, measuring and marking dimensions and reference points on material, selecting proper tooling, attachments, and accessories as well as manufacturing fixtures to hold work pieces and assemblies
- Advanced working knowledge of all feed/speed rates and machining characteristics of various materials
- Ability to machine complex parts to close tolerances ensuring that the finish requirements of the drawing specifications are achieved with first time quality
- Confers with engineers, production personnel, or others to resolve machining or assembly problems
- Work includes small and large assembly, and machining of heavy steel
- Apply knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, machinability of materials, and machine shop procedures
- Perform machine maintenance and is responsible for keeping work are clean and the immediate reporting of safety issues to Supervisor
- Work independently to complete responsibilities
- NDT experience is a plus
- Must be US citizen and be able to obtain and maintain DOD security clearance
- 5 years machine shop experience and/or have completed a recognized apprenticeship as a General Machinist.
- Ability to read and interpret engineering drawings
- Ability to machine as per drawing tolerance of .0005" where required
- Must be able to demonstrate General Machinist skills in the following areas:
- Lathe
- Milling
- Drilling
- Machine shop power and pneumatic tools
- Must be able to design and manufacture fixtures and template
- Must be able to make own layouts as per drawing
- Must be able to understand GD&T tolerances
- Experience operating forklifts, cranes, plate clamps and slings a plus
- Expected to have or purchase basic hand tools.
- The ability to work overtime when necessary and travel up to 25% is also a must.
- Must possess valid drivers license and maintain a clear driving record

Duties include:
- Fiberglass and Metal Machining: Use conventional machining tools (e.g., large industrial planer, lathe, milling machine, surface grinder, and drill press) to cut, shape, and finish fiberglass and metal parts according to technical drawings and specifications.
- Material Handling: Safely handle and work with fiberglass and other materials, including sheets, rods, and laminates. Understand the differences in fiberglass grades and resins to ensure proper machining techniques.
- Blueprint and Technical Drawing Interpretation: Read and interpret complex blueprints, technical drawings, and specifications tailored to military applications. Ensure that all parts are fabricated to precise tolerances and meet defense industry standard

Qualifications:

Job Summary:
The Conventional Machinist sets up and operates a variety of manual lathes to produce precision parts and instruments including fabricating, modifying, or repairing mechanical instruments. The Conventional Machinist may also fabricate and modify parts to make or repair machine tools or maintain industrial machines, applying knowledge of mechanics, shop mathematics, metal properties, layout, and machining procedures.
Essential Functions:
- Maintains safe operations by adhering to safety procedures and regulations.
- Maintains specification by observing drilling grooving and cutting including turning, facing and thread chasing operations; taking measurements; detecting malfunctions; troubleshooting processes; adjusting and reprogramming controls; sharpening and replacing worn tools; adhering to quality assurance procedures and processes.
- Calculates machine speed and feed ratios, and the size and position
- Documents actions by completing production and quality logs.
- Maintains continuity among work shifts by documenting and communicating actions irregularities and continuing needs.
- Experience:
- 5+ years' experience in general machining
- 3+ years' experience operating manual lathes
- Experience using measuring devices such as micrometers, calipers, plug gauges, and/or air gauges
- Knowledge/Skills:
- Able to operate:
- Drill press
- Manual lathe
- Punch press machine
- Tumbler/de-burr machine
- Grinder
- CNC lathe machining experience a plus.
- Able to operate:
- Education / Certification: High school diploma or equivalent.
