Position Overview
This role offers a unique opportunity to lead high-profile correctional and detention facility projects that influence the future of justice architecture. The ideal candidate will be a licensed architect with deep experience in secure environments and a proven ability to lead multidisciplinary teams from concept through construction. You will play a central role in shaping project vision, maintaining design integrity, and ensuring technical precision across all project phases.
Key Responsibilities
- Serve as the design and technical lead for correctional and justice facility projects across the region
- Collaborate closely with clients, government agencies, and consultants to deliver secure, functional, and human-centered environments
- Direct the development of construction documents, ensuring full compliance with relevant codes, accessibility standards (ADA), and correctional facility guidelines
- Provide oversight during bidding and construction phases, supporting quality assurance and field coordination
- Lead internal design charrettes and mentor emerging professionals within a collaborative studio culture
- Contribute to project scheduling, budgeting, and strategic planning alongside firm leadership
Required Qualifications
- Active U.S. architectural license (New Jersey / PA and or NY license preferred)
- Minimum 10 years of architectural experience, including at least 5 years focused on correctional or detention facility design
- Strong command of Revit, AutoCAD, and Adobe Creative Suite
- Expertise in building systems, detailing, and construction documentation
- Familiarity with public procurement processes and design-build delivery models
- Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills
Preferred Qualifications
- Demonstrated experience working with departments of correction, municipal or county jail systems
- LEED accreditation and a working knowledge of sustainable design practices
- NCARB certification or eligibility for reciprocity.

Duties Summary
Independently develops, implements and evaluates individual educational plans for inmates confined in an adult correctional facility; and performs other related duties as assigned.
Minimum Qualification Requirements
To qualify, you must meet all of the following requirements:
Legal Authorization to Work:
The State of Hawaii requires all persons seeking employment with the government of the State shall be citizens, nationals, or permanent resident aliens of the United States, or eligible under federal law for unrestricted employment in the United States.
Prerequisite Knowledge and Abilities Required:
Knowledge of: Basic principles of human behavior and motivation; principles and practices of education and learning; instructional methods and materials; and report writing.
Ability to: Assess, plan, coordinate, carry out and evaluate academic/vocational activities for inmates; assess inmates' progress; learn and apply the legislative mandates and statutes relating to the educational requirements for inmates; learn and apply corrections education program activities, goals and objectives, laws, rules, regulations, policies and procedures; learn about and utilize related programs in educational institutions, community resources and agencies; learn which federal, State and local government agencies are involved with educational issues; become aware of vocational opportunities in the correctional facility such as activities in the carpentry work line, or in computer graphics, as part of the Correctional Industries program; maintain records and write reports of inmate activities, participation and progress in the corrections education program; plan and conduct academic instruction; and deal effectively with a variety of people and agencies (inmates, instructors, tutors, volunteers, businesses, schools) who provide services.
Basic Education: A bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university.
General Experience: One and one-half ( 1-1/2) years* of progressively responsible professional teaching experience which involved developing educational lesson plans; providing instruction to students; assessing students' progress and modifying educational plans to address level of progress. Such experience MUST have involved and demonstrated knowledge of the application of principles and practices of education and learning and instructional methods and materials.
*One year of General Experience is defined as a school year approximately 180 "teacher duty" days or approximately 38 weeks per year.
Non-Qualifying Experience: Teaching work experience of general interest subjects such as dancing, ukulele, etc., which did not require the knowledge and application of principles and practices of education and learning and instructional methods and materials, or which did not require assessment, evaluation and measurement of student progress is not qualifying.
Substitutions Allowed: Relevant substitutions as described in the Minimum Qualification Requirements, will apply.

Paid Sick Leave
You may earn sick leave at the same rate as vacation - 21 days per year from the FIRST year, and there is no limit on the amount you can accumulate. Premium Conversion Plan
Participating employees may increase their take-home pay by having the State deduct the cost of health care premiums before payroll taxes are withheld.
Flexible Spending Accounts
Eligible employees can reduce their federal and state income taxes and social security taxes through a tax-savings benefit program called Island Flex. This program allows employees to set aside money from their paychecks to pay for out-of-pocket health care expenses and eligible dependent care expenses on a BEFORE-TAX basis.
Transportation Benefits
Participating employees may increase their take-home pay by having the State deduct qualified transportation expenses (i.e. eligible parking fees, monthly bus passes for TheBus, fare coupons for The Handi-Van, Vanpool Hawaii participation fee, etc.) through pre-tax payroll deductions.
Deferred Compensation

Duties Summary
The Substance Abuse Specialist III serves as a member of a multi-disciplinary team comprised of certified or licensed practitioners, social workers, and/or other public or private rehabilitative employees, groups or agencies collaborating on multi-disciplinary assessment, development and implementation, and evaluation of individualized treatment plans aimed at helping users overcome their alcohol and/or substance use; independently conducts a variety of educational, treatment and therapeutic related classes; and participates in the development, evaluation, and modification of program policies and procedures, treatment approaches, and development and modification of substance abuse treatment education and related therapeutic classes and curriculum.
These positions represent the fully trained and experienced substance specialist responsible for independently providing substance abuse intervention treatment services to the full range and variety of users; and perform other related duties as assigned.

Duties Summary
This is the staff/journey level for nursing positions that are assigned to one clinical service area or rotation among the various nursing areas of the institution or hospital. Personal Requirements: Applicants must demonstrate that they possess traits and characteristics required for this work. Among these are: alertness, tact, integrity, honesty, good judgment, and the ability to deal with inmates and employees.
Physical Requirements: Applicants must be physically able to perform the essential duties of the position, such as: reading reports, regulations and court orders; observing inmate activity, behavior and movement; seeing and recognizing inmates at a distance; observing area around the yard and inmate activity from the watch tower; distinguishing colors in locating and identifying and testifying on contraband and in inspecting property; listening for unusual sounds which may indicate suspicious activity; cleaning, loading and firing weapons; using handcuffs and leg chains; locking and unlocking doors; closing gates rapidly in emergencies; performing searches and shakedowns of inmates, their quarters and other areas; restraining/subduing inmates; breaking up fights between inmates; defending self and others against inmate attack; carrying inmates to seclusion room or other locations; chasing escaping inmates and participating in manhunts; holding back a crowd; walking and standing prolonged hours; and working double shifts.

Probationary Period: If selected for employment, you must pass all phases of the BCRC and additional drug tests during your nine-month probationary period.
Transfer Policy: Adult Corrections Officers Recruits must remain at the Facility in which they are appointed for three years from the date of appointment. Transfer to another facility location may be permitted only after the three-year period has been served.
TESTING INFORMATION
The examination for this recruitment involves "successive hurdles." Applicants must successfully complete and pass EACH test phase before proceeding to the next.
Qualified candidates who have successfully completed and passed EACH test phase, including the Criminal History Check and Comprehensive Background Investigation, will be contacted to attend the next available Basic Corrections Recruit Class (BCRC). The BCRC is part of the initial probationary period and part of the examination process to determine the employee's fitness and ability for the position. If you are not already involved in a regular exercise program, start one now. Maintaining and/or improving your fitness level will increase your chances for success in the COPAT. The job of an Adult Corrections Officer is physically demanding, stressful, and may be dangerous from time to time. Check with your physician or health care provider prior to engaging in any strenuous physical training.
All applicants must complete the COPAT (Correctional Officer Physical Abilities Test) Course in 3 minutes and 45 seconds or less. The events are designed to simulate job-related tasks that Adult Corrections Officers must perform in providing security and in responding to emergency situations. 4. ORAL INTERVIEW
The Oral Interview will be administered on the islands of Hawaii, Oahu, Maui, and Kauai at a designated location only. There shall be no exceptions granted.

SUITABILITY - FEDERAL FIREARM GUN CONTROL ACT - LAUTENBERG AMENDMENT
Incumbents of these positions are required to be qualified to use, carry, and have access to firearms at all times.

Description of Job
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections' (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. Correctional Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry.
Correctional Officers respectfully communicate with inmates and their families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; presenting a professional and dependable workforce. Positions must cooperate with other staff members and work as a cohesive team, while managing a diverse inmate population.
Positions maintain the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
-
Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
-
Man an armed post (this requires annual firearms certification);
-
Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
-
Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
-
Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
-
Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles;
-
Monitor visiting areas;
-
Conduct formal, informal, and emergency counts;
-
Cross-check and maintain movement logs;
-
Conduct searches for contraband (this may include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, stri,p and vehicle searches);

Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety, and sanitation standards;

Inspect inmate mail and property;
-
Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergency situations, such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes;

Follow established tool and key control, ensure proper storage and documentation;

Document incidents utilize established reporting practices.

Possess a valid and unrestricted, driver’s license; Drivers must maintain a valid, non-restricted Colorado driver license, obey traffic laws, and be able to safely operate a motor vehicle. State drivers are expected to maintain a safe driving record consistent with Colorado Division of Human Resources Universal Policy Driving Standards ( . Eligibility to drive a State-owned vehicle, includes holding a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment or residency change and meeting specific driving record criteria. Serious traffic violations, including DUIs or reckless driving, can disqualify drivers for up to seven years. A ll State Vehicles are monitored by telematics for safe operation and employees have no reasonable expectation of privacy while using an agency State Fleet vehicle.

The CDOC shall not hire nor promote anyone who may have contact with an offender who has engaged in sexual abuse which includes acts, activity, and sexual behavior, in a prison or other institution as defined in 42 U.S.C. 1997; or has been convicted of engaging or attempting to engage in sexual activity in the community facilitated by force, overt or implied threats of force or coercion, or if the victim did not consent or was unable to consent or refuse, or has been civilly or administratively adjudicated to have engaged in the activity described in the above paragraph. The agency shall consider any incidents of sexual harassment in determining whether to hire anyone who may have contact with offenders or residents.

Successful completion of a background investigation is required. Should applicant’s background reveal criminal charges, it shall be the responsibility of the applicant to provide the Department of Corrections with written/official disposition of any charges.

Successfully pass all modules of the Colorado Department of Corrections Basic Training, to include English reading comprehension, relevant competency assessments and written/practical exams in Defensive Tactics;

Must be willing and able to work all shifts, doubles, weekends and holidays. Must be able to report to work during inclement weather. New Correctional Officers will not be given their shift schedule until completion of Basic Training.

Description of Job
The Correctional Officer I (CO I) position maintains the safety and security of Colorado Department of Corrections' (CDOC) prison facilities throughout the state. Correctional Officers support the CDOC Mission, Vision and Values with integrity and commitment while preparing inmates for community reentry.
Correctional Officers respectfully communicate with inmates and their families, coworkers, supervisors, managers and the public; presenting a professional and dependable workforce. Positions must cooperate with other staff members and work as a cohesive team, while managing a diverse inmate population.
Positions maintain the safety and security of the general public, staff and inmates. Duties include, but are not limited to:

Work directly with inmates in a locked facility;
-
Monitor and control access to the facility and restricted areas;
-
Man an armed post (this requires annual firearms certification);
-
Monitor facility perimeter, detain unidentified pedestrians and/or vehicles;
-
Operate a variety of mechanical doors, security devices, equipment and alarms;
-
Control movement of inmates throughout the daily schedule;
-
Escort and transport inmates in authorized state vehicles;
-
Monitor visiting areas;
-
Conduct formal, informal and emergency counts;
-
Cross check and maintain movement logs;
-
Conduct searches for contraband (this may include canine, metal detector, pat, perimeter, strip and vehicle searches);

Inspect facility and cells to maintain health, safety and sanitation standards;

Inspect inmate mail and property;
-
Utilize proper protocols when responding to emergency situations, such as fights, medical emergencies, fires and escapes;

Document incidents utilize established reporting practices;

Eligibility to drive a State-owned vehicle, includes holding a valid Colorado driver’s license within 30 days of employment or residency change and meeting specific driving record criteria. All State Vehicles are monitored by telematics for safe operation and employees have no reasonable expectation of privacy while using an agency State Fleet vehicle.
