Summary
Whatcom County Superior Court is seeking a skilled and reliable Court Reporter to join our team.
This position is responsible for creating and maintaining accurate, real-time records of court proceedings and ensuring timely transcript delivery in accordance with legal requirements. The ideal candidate will be detail-oriented, maintain professionalism in the courtroom, and possess strong technical and communication skills.
Whatcom County Superior Court is an independent branch of government and personnel employed under the judicial branch of government. The positions are in accordance with GR 29. Under GR 29, the Presiding Judge is responsible for the daily operations of the Court, which includes working conditions, hiring, discipline, and termination decisions.
Key Duties Include:
- Attend court proceedings and produce accurate, real-time verbatim transcripts
- Provide transcripts and rough drafts to judges as needed
- Maintain stenographic equipment, records, and databases in compliance with legal standards
- Collaborate with coworkers to ensure complete and consistent case records
- Respond to inquiries from court staff, legal professionals, and the public
- Meet required deadlines for transcript preparation
- Stay current on court reporting practices and maintain necessary certifications

Salary Range: Unrepresented- Range 801
Hiring rate depends on qualifications. This position receives annual pay increases to the next step in the associated salary range (apx. 3.8%) subject to satisfactory performance, in addition to any negotiated Cost of Living Adjustments (COLA).
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in General Studies, English, or a related field AND three years of progressively responsible experience in legal reporting
OR
Associate's degree in Court Reporting AND five years of progressively responsible experience in legal reporting
Desired:
- Certificate of completion from a court reporting program approved by the National Court Reporters Association (NCRA) or equivalent
- Three to five years of recent and continuous court reporting experience across a variety of subject matters
- Strong writing, grammar, and transcription skills
- Proficiency in operating computerized stenographic equipment and court reporting software

Per Diem Court Reporter: Circuit Court for Caroline County
The Department: The Circuit Court for Caroline County oversees and manages all types of cases to include civil, criminal, family, and juvenile matters, from prescheduled hearings to processing emergency requests and motions, some of which include both in person and remote hearings, to jury trials.
About the Position: The Court Reporter is responsible for recording and noting/tagging court hearings as assigned by the Court Administrator, as well as processing requests for audio recordings and transcripts. The incumbent reports to the Administrative Judge and Court Administrator.
REQUIRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS:

The fee for a copy, furnished on request, is 0.65 per page, to be paid to the officer of the court who prepared the transcript. Depending on the location transcript work can be moderate to extensive. Court reporters may be allowed to freelance and perform outside depositional work that does not involve the recording and/or transcribing of official judicial system court proceedings outside of normal office hours and for additional compensation as court calendars permit.

DESCRIPTION
Under direction, the official court reporter is responsible for the verbatim official record; provides readback upon request; prepares certified transcripts of the proceedings; and performs other related duties.
Employment Standards/Typical Qualifications:
Certification by the California Department of Consumer Affairs Certified Shorthand Reporters Board is required. Incumbents provide and maintain the necessary equipment for the transcription of court proceedings. A valid California Driver's license may be required. Employees in this classification may be required to use their own vehicle to travel between facilities.
Court Reporter realtime skills and/or certification are desirable. A pay differential is available for realtime services.
Examples of Duties
Positions in this class may perform any or all of the below listed duties. These should be interpreted as examples of the work, and are not necessarily all-inclusive.
- Primary work is to attend court sessions as assigned and make verbatim stenographic records of the proceedings.
- Provide immediate readback of all or portions of the court proceedings upon instruction of the judge.
- Prepare printed, electronic or digital media transcripts of court proceedings.
- Review and certify transcripts for accuracy, and files transcripts of court proceedings as required by statutes and as ordered by the Court.
- Prioritize requests for transcripts in order to meet legal timelines.
- Maintain a variety of electronic and paper files of the court record for which the reporter is directly responsible, prepares daily transcripts as needed, and provides transcripts of proceedings on request of parties or by order of the court.
- Serve as a relief or floater reporter when needed in any court location.
- Upload court reporter notes monthly to the "Court Reporter notes archival system."

- California Law, Rules of Court, court forms and procedures that relate to court reporting services.
- Proper English usage, spelling, grammar, vocabulary and punctuation.

The knowledge and skills listed above may be acquired through various types of experience, education, or training, typically:
Experience: Three (3) years of significant, directly related certified shorthand reporting or voice writing experience, preferably in a court environment.
Education: Equivalent to graduation from the twelfth grade (high school) or GED.
License: Possess and maintain a license as a Certified Shorthand Reporter or a license as a voice writer issued by the State of California.

- During the hours court is open for transaction of judicial business, incumbents shall not engage in, or solicit to engage in any other employment in their professional capacity. Other transcriptions not mandatory by statute must be done on own time outside of work hours. The incumbent primary duties are to attend court and transcribe transcripts that are mandatory by statute and/or ordered by the court.
- Incumbents provide, move/handle and maintain their own equipment and cover the costs of transcribing the record in return for a fee set by statute.

Position Purpose:
Position reports, transcribes, and serves as the guardian of the verbatim stenographic record of official court proceedings in an accurate, impartial, and confidential manner. Duties may include:
- Attending court sessions and providing verbatim reporting on those proceedings to ensure justice is upheld and provides the necessary written verbatim record as to whether procedures, laws, and statutes were appropriately followed in order to determine whether a decision should be upheld or reversed.
- Transcribing and producing transcripts requested by the Judge and other court personnel in regard to proceedings that have been reported.
- Scheduling the Judge's court calendar to ensure hearings and trials are held in a timely manner and does not conflict with the other court schedule/events.
- Preparing correspondence, answering the telephone and taking messages, and responding to attorneys' or parties' inquiries on behalf of the Judge to ensure timely responses.
- Performing other work as assigned, depending on Circuit/Judge.
- Graduation from an accredited or non-accredited court reporting school with a Registered Professional Reporter (RPR) certification and the ability to type 225 words per minute with 95% accuracy. South Dakota Notary Public is required to swear in witnesses in the courtroom. No experience is necessary.
- Successful completion of a criminal background investigation is required for employment.
- 5% increase in salary after successful completion of CRR (Certified Real-time Reporter) certification.
