About Us
The Historic Jamaa Birth Village Cultural Heritage Center is the nation's first cultural hub dedicated to African Indigenous midwifery, history, and healing practices. Home to the African Indigenous Midwifery Museum (AIMM), the African Indigenous Midwifery Library & Research Institute (AIM LRI), and Okunsola's School of Traditional Midwifery, our Center represents a decade-long evolution from Missouri's first Black-led midwifery clinic to a global cultural and educational institution.
We are seeking a visionary Chief Cultural & Executive Officer (CCEO) to lead us into this new era, someone who can safeguard our collections, expand our mission, and ensure that Jamaa continues to thrive as both a local sanctuary and global cultural leader.
Position Overview
The CCEO serves as the highest-ranking staff leader of the Cultural Heritage Center. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the CCEO is responsible for:
Strategic Leadership: Expanding our mission, developing national and global partnerships, and positioning the Center as a premier cultural, educational, and maternal health heritage institution.
Collections Stewardship: Preserving and protecting museum and library collections in line with best practices.
Program Oversight: Leading exhibitions, archival development, educational programming, and the School of Traditional Midwifery.
Operations & Finance: Overseeing staff, budgeting, compliance, grants, contracts, and day-to-day operations.
Community & Global Engagement: Building bridges across St. Louis, Missouri, and the world, uplifting our story of cultural reclamation and ancestral midwifery.
Key Responsibilities
Preserve, protect, and expand AIMM & AIM LRI collections, exhibitions, and archives.
Lead long- and short-term strategic planning for the Center.
Supervise all administrative, curatorial, educational, and programmatic staff.
Oversee financial operations, including grant administration and donor development.
Ensure accessibility, equity, and excellence in visitor and community engagement.
Represent Jamaa locally, nationally, and globally as a thought leader.
Work closely with the Board on governance, compliance, and organizational growth.
Qualifications (Required)
7+ years of progressive leadership experience in the cultural heritage, museum, or archival sector.
Proven nonprofit leadership experience, including budgeting, fundraising, capital campaigns and staff supervision.
Bachelor's degree required (African or African American Studies, Global Studies, Museum Studies, Library Science, Maternal & Child Health, or related field).
Experience developing exhibitions, educational programs, and/or public scholarship.
Strong record of advancing equity, cultural preservation, and social justice in organizational leadership.
Preferred Qualifications
Advanced degree (Master's or Doctorate) in a relevant field (e.g., African/African American Studies, Museum Studies, Global Studies, Maternal & Child Health).
Experience working directly in maternal health, midwifery, or reproductive justice sectors.
Global experience in cultural preservation, international partnerships, or diaspora studies.
Demonstrated success in grant writing, fundraising, and cultivating donors.
Bilingual or multilingual abilities (especially African or Afro-diasporic languages).

The offered rate will be based on contract affordability and the selected candidate's working location, knowledge, skills, abilities and / or experience and in consideration of internal parity.
Additional Compensation:
KBR may offer bonuses, commission, or other forms of compensation to certain job titles or levels, per internal policy or contractual designation.
