Core Responsibilities and Essential Functions: CYTOLOGY PREPARATION:- Ensure that specimens and patients are properly labeled with patient and site information when received in the laboratory.- Accurately accession and enter patient data and specimen type into the Laboratory computer system.- Process each specimen maintaining patient identification through the preparation process.- Cytology prep is performed by the Cytotechnologist, per facility as applicable.- Verify the quality control (routine, histochemistry stains and/or immunohistochemistry) and patient slides are acceptable before forwarding to pathologist. PATHOLOGY COMPUTER, PRINCIPLE AND INSTRUMENTATION:- Knowledge of all cytology instrumentation and how to troubleshoot.- Pull request and pending logs sendouts in the Misys and CoPath computer systems.- Enter sendout test charges as well as intraoperative consultation and ThinPrep Pathologist review charges.- Have complete knowledge and understanding for CoPath Cytology billing, physician group codes. QUALITY MANAGEMENT:- Resolve and inform any quality control and/or quality assurance issues to supervisors of involved departments.- Perform maintenance check on cytology equipment documentation required by regulatory agencies.- Monitor patient reports and prepare Reference lab requisitions to be sent out for consultation; ensure HIPPA compliance.- Coordinate staffing, vacation, and work duties to maintain a steady workflow. SPECIAL PROCEDURES:- Perform NON-GYN screening duties accurately and efficiently meeting error threshold.- Perform stat FNA procedures and routine FNA within acceptable turnaround time.- Perform GYN-Automated assisted PAP duties accurately and efficiently meeting error threshold per facility as applicable.- Enter cytological findings in the laboratory computer system and distribute to the assigned pathologist.- Continually update and follow all regulatory guidelines set by OSHA, CLIA, CAP, JCAHO, etc.- Perform embedding, microtomy, special staining and IHC techniques per facility as applicable. SUMMARY

RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Examines and accurately reports on Gynecologic and Non-gynecologic Cytology specimens.

  • Updates and maintains cytology report and slide files.

  • Assists personnel in Cytology FNA procedures.

  • Has knowledge and ability to assist with cytopreparatory procedures.

  • Has working knowledge of Cytology Information System.

  • Interacts with physician offices in obtaining pertinent clinical information and specimen problem solving.

  • Participates in Continuing Medical Education.

  • Assists in teaching students from various programs.

  • Follows all department procedures and protocols.

  • Recognizes, analyzes problems using scientific methods. Reports issues to supervisor or lead tech

  • Participates in maintaining department technical readiness to meet regulatory compliance.

REQUIRED QUALIFICTIONS:

  • BS in Cytotechnology or BS in a related Science

  • New York State Department of Education License or Limited Permit as a Cytotechnologist.

Documentation of successful completion of CMS approved Pap Proficiency Test within the past 12 months required.

Previous cytology experience preferred.


OTHER CREDENTIALS / CERTIFICATIONS:


Certification in good standing with the American Society of Clinical Pathologists or eligible (CT, ASCP) required.

**Summary:**
This position is responsible for performing complex laboratory procedures related to cytopathology testing, including screening slides, performing adequacy checks on fine needle aspirates, and processing and staining specimens. WORKING CONDITIONS:
Able to work in fast pace, often stressful, computerized environment. Able to lift 20 pounds and perform repetitive motions. Works in laboratory with exposure to potentially infectious and hazardous materials.
CLIA QUALIFICATION FOR TESTING:
Employees in this job classification are qualified to perform high complexity testing. Employees' education and/or laboratory experience meet the requirements delineated in the Clinical Laboratory Improvement Amendment of 1996.
**Responsibilities:**
Performs Laboratory Testing
Utilizes required Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) to perform all laboratory procedures efficiently and effectively with minimal supervision once trained.¡@ All testing must be done following Rush approved Policies and Procedures.
Screening cytopathology slides of both gynecological and non-gynecological fluids
Performs adequacy checks of fine needle aspirates in the clinical areas (IR, OR, Endoscopy, etc).
Process specimens using cytospin, or thin-prep instrument.
Reviews negative cytological cases as a means of quality control.¡@
Participates in the training program for residents of Pathology and retains records of positive and interesting cases for educational purposes and inspecting agencies.
Works closely with clinical staff providing information on correct handling of specimens, test results, pertinent clinical information and decision making priority cases.
Quality Control and Preventative Maintenance
Performs required quality control (QC) procedures and preventative maintenance, including corrective action and documentation, for all procedures and instrumentation. Recognizes QC problems or discrepancies and attempts to determine the cause of problem. Notifies appropriate supervisor or designee regarding QC problems or discrepancies according to the established procedure.
Troubleshooting
Performs basic troubleshooting of equipment and processes with minimal assistance, documents action and notifies appropriate personnel, for example, supervisors, of problems all of the time. Able to recognize when additional help is needed and seeks out that help.
Organization of Work Area
Keeps work area neat, clean, organized, and well stocked at all times. Disinfects area at the beginning and end of each shift.
Specimen Acceptability
Accepts no inappropriate specimens annually.
Turnaround Time Expectations
Meets turnaround time expectations by prioritizing and organizing the workload for the shift. Monitors the pending list periodically to ensure turn-around time of all samples.
Time Management
Utilizes time effectively and seeks out additional job duties when shift tasks are complete. Completes work without incurring overtime. Assists fellow workers to finish shift tasks. Adheres to the defined allotted time for breaks and lunch.
Continuing Education
Required to obtain and document 12 hours of laboratory continuing education per year.
Special Projects
Accepts and/or volunteers for method evaluations and new procedure development or other special projects and completes them within an agreed upon time frame. Participates in procedure implementation and training of new staff and students. Encouraged to identify and participate in process improvement projects.
Tech-in-Charge
May perform the duties of the tech-in- charge for specified periods of time. Over sees operations according to departmental guidelines. Understands when to defer issues to appropriate personnel, for example a supervisor or director.
Results Reporting and Reviewing.
Transcribes results accurately into the Lab Information System.
Reviews lab results as required, and takes actions before verification and release.
