**ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS**
+ Learns and performs chair side assistance to dentists and other providers, maintain a sterile environment and aseptic technique, and utilize "four-handed" techniques.
+ Retracts the patient's cheek or tongue, operates oral vacuum evacuating equipment and applies water and air to the field of operation.
+ Anticipates day-to-day needs in the clinical environment, including armamentarium, nitrogen tank, and other specific equipment, material and supply needs for patient and provider to ensure smooth operations and patient safety.
+ Reviews patient record to consider and prepare for the complexity of each visit and/or procedure and the time frame required so patient schedule may be maintained or modified as needed.
+ Sets up and uses specialized equipment for documentation of vital signs, including pulse oximetry during nitrous oxide or IV sedation cases. Cleans and maintains equipment.
+ Learns and adopts necessary skills to take intra-oral, extra-oral, and panorex radiographs. Anticipate diagnostic needs. Develops and mounts radiographs.
+ Notifies of patient arrival and escort patients through the clinic.
+ Provides special assistance for non-ambulatory patients.
+ Follows standard clinical safety protocol for Patient Identification Verification.
+ Learns and adopts necessary skills to perform instrument sterilization.
+ Enters patient data into the electronic medical record.
+ Reviews discharge instructions with patient as prepared by provider.
+ Learns and adopts necessary skills to perform basic dental laboratory procedures such as pouring models for dentures, partials, and crown models, making bite guards or setting up fluoride trays for preventive therapy.

**MINIMUM EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE**
+ High School diploma or equivalent GED preferred
+ Or equivalent combination of education and experience

Organizational Function and ResponsibilitiesThis position is responsible for instruction in the Dental Hygienist program at the college level. This includes developing a relevant and progressive curriculum, designing and implementing effective learning strategies and environments, delivering instruction of high quality, assessing student learning, advising students, and participating in college service activities at the department, division and college levels. Instructors develop instructional strategies and curriculum as a regular part of their work, and are encouraged to serve on committees.
This position reports to the Department Chair in the School of Health Education.
Essential Duties1. Responsible for instruction of Dental Hygienist courses.
2. Develop and plan appropriate instructional and alternative delivery strategies when appropriate.
3. Instruct students in classes and participate in college service activities as assigned by the immediate supervisor.
4. Assist and advise students who have problems with assignments, tests, grades, course content, career concerns, and other academic matters.
5. Evaluate student performance in courses taught by the instructor.
6. Actively work with other personnel in student recruitment, retention and job placement.
7. Develop and maintain curriculum in collaboration with department/division staff.
8. Participate in instructional and curriculum articulation activities with other programs and other divisions of instruction.
9. Comply with college policies and directions regarding student testing, record keeping, advanced standing, providing grades on a timely basis, maintaining office hours for student assistance and counseling, etc.
10. Assist students in developing work experience assignments such as internships, work study assignments, team projects, etc.
11. Maintain competencies as an instructor as aligned with the Faculty Quality Assurance System.

4. Certified in nitrous oxide and local anesthetic.
5. Two (2) years or 4,000 hours of work experience in dental hygiene.

The Role:

- Interface with the dental vendor, fiduciary intermediary, the professional relations and client services staff regarding provider treatment patterns and findings of concern;
- Escalate documented findings for consideration to the Quality Assurance Division;
- Compose and document communications with CMAP providers, their staff and community partners;
- Develop and interpret data specifically related to the provision of dental services and utilization review;
- Periodically review Utilization Management data from the dental vendor and statistical analysis; review and update process requirements;
- Analyze provider care cost reports when necessary;
- Management regarding strategic development and advancement of the dental program;
- Understanding of state and federal regulations;
- Develop and compose budgets;
- Develop and write requests for Proposal and Contract language.

The Dental Assistant assists the Dentist during dental procedures and performs various general office duties.
Responsibilities:
- Greets and places patients into treatment area; ask about the patient's medical history and taking blood pressure and pulse; helping patients feel comfortable before, during and after dental treatment.
- Provides patients with instructions for all procedures including but not limited to oral care following surgery or other dental treatment procedures, such as the placement of a restoration (filling). Instructs patients appropriate oral hygiene strategies to maintain oral health; (e.g., tooth brushing, flossing and nutritional counseling).
- Prepares treatment room for patient by following prescribed procedures and protocols; provides instrumentation by sterilizing and delivering instruments to treatment area; positioning instruments for dentist's access; suctioning; passing instruments; maintains safe and clean working environment by complying with procedures, rules, and regulations, including adhering to infection-control policies and protocols.
- Assists the dentist during a variety of treatment procedures including but not limited to taking and developing dental radiographs (x-rays); and impressions of patients' teeth for study casts. Helps provide direct patient care in all dental specialties, including orthodontics, pediatric dentistry, periodontics and oral surgery.
- Assists in preparing and taking impressions of patients' teeth for study casts (models of teeth).
- Protects patients and employees implementing protocols for infection control, sterilizing instruments and cleaning equipment and other areas as seen fit.
- Communicates with suppliers (e.g., scheduling appointments, answering the telephone, billing and ordering supplies).
- Maintains patient confidence and protects operations by keeping information confidential according to HIPAA requirements and regulations.
- Conserves dental resources by using equipment and supplies as needed to accomplish job results; Stock operatories and maintain clinical supply inventory.
- Communicates and collaborates visits at schools, head starts, daycares and other community organizations. Participates in community events such as health fairs, etc.
- Completes all SEALS reporting data as directed and fulfills all requirements dictated by Chicago Public Schools, Chicago Department of Public Health and any other entities that have such demands for collaborations and partnerships.
Requirements:
- High School diploma or equivalent
- Dental Assistant Certificate
- Coronal Polishing and Pit/Fissure Sealants Certificate
- CPR Certification
