Essential Job Functions
- Fulfills administrative and teaching responsibilities for General (dental) Practice Residency or Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Training Program to achieve the educational goal of the program.
- Performs as a Trauma Team Member in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery for a Level I Trauma Center.
- Provides trauma and other on-call responsibilities consistent with the needs of an acute care hospital.
- Performs specialty diagnostic, therapeutic and consultative procedures for patients presenting for care in the Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery Outpatient Clinic; problems may include orofacial deformities, injuries or pathologic conditions of the jaws and associated structure.
- Maintains clinical privileges at both Harbor UCLA Medical Center and Martin Luther King Outpatient Care to ensure comprehensive dental care of the medically compromised patient.
- Performs public health dental services detecting and measuring the incidence and prevalence of oral health problems with emphasis on diagnosing, preventing, intercepting and controlling oral health diseases.
- Performs complex endodontics, including root canal therapy on the anterior and posterior teeth of both children and adults, stressing the more difficult posterior therapy and apicoectomy or root excisions along with retrofillings.
- Performs oral surgery, including removal of impacted teeth, torus mandibularis and torus palatinus, treats jaw fractures and removal of pre-malignant lesions.
- Performs advanced periodontic procedures, including minor orthodontic treatment, treats traumatic dental injuries and children with special medical or psychological problems such as heart disease, cerebral palsy, epilepsy and physical, mental, and emotional handicap.
- Performs complex procedures for the treatment of diseases and abnormalities of the periodontal structures of the jaw.
- Performs complex prosthodontic procedures, including construction of obtruators for cleft palates and prosthodontic appliances to replace missing structures and treats unusual and difficult denture cases.
- Performs comprehensive orthodontic services. Conducts training or assists in the training of dental interns and residents.
- Conduct specialized dental research, special studies, and services as needed.
SELECTION REQUIREMENTS: Degree of Doctor of Dental Surgery or Doctor of Dental Medicine conferred by a dental school approved by the World Health Organization as required by the California Dental Practice Act -AND - Successful completion of an Advanced Specialty Education Program * approved by the American Dental Association.
LICENSE:
To be considered for this role, at the time of hire,you will need to meet the following License/Certificate Requirement and will need to provide the hiring team supporting documentation:
- A California license to practice dentistry issued by the Dental Board of California -AND - A Radiation Safety License issued by the Dental Board of California -OR - A certificate of compliance from an approved Board course in radiation safety. EXAMINATION CONTENT: There is no test associated with this examination because it is considered a noncompetitive exam. Applicants who qualify for this position will be placed on the list for a period of 6 months and will need to meet the requirements within that timeframe.

**Summary**
Highland Hospital, located in Oakland, California, is a UCSF affiliated level 1 trauma center and is the largest facility of Alameda Health System which serves a diverse patient population in California's East Bay Area. The Dental Clinic at Highland Hospital provides comprehensive dental care including but not limited to; preventative and restorative dental services, emergency dental services and exodontia. **DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:** NOTE: The following are the duties performed by employees in this classification. However, employees may perform other related duties at an equivalent level. Not all duties listed are necessarily performed by each individual in the classification.

Responsibilities:
- Assist dentists and hygienists in providing exceptional chair-side support, including charting, patient education, and managing operatory setup and clean-up.
- Ensure efficient patient flow, prioritizing treatment rooms, and keeping the dental team informed of patient status.
- Warmly welcome and greet patients, introducing yourself and your role to make them feel comfortable.
- Take and process X-rays in accordance with safety protocols.
- Facilitate smooth patient hand-offs between team members.
- Update and manage patient treatment plans based on the treating doctor's direction using the operational system.
- Strive to exceed patient expectations; proactively address any concerns.
- Guide patients to the checkout area after their appointments and assist with scheduling follow-ups.
- Oversee sterility processes for dental tools and equipment.
- Monitor laboratory cases to ensure they are completed for the next day's schedule.
- Maintain well-stocked emergency kits and first aid supplies, including necessary medications and equipment.
- Adhere to the maintenance schedules for all operational equipment and promptly report any issues.
- Keep the MSDS binder updated to ensure compliance with safety standards.
- Follow all OSHA regulations and maintain required certifications including HIPAA compliance, CPR, and X-ray certification.
- Complete annual continuing education (CE) requirements as required by your state.
- Perform other duties as assigned by your supervisor.
Qualifications:
- Required Education: High School diploma or GED
- Experience: Minimum of 1 year in a dental assistant role or similar
- Maintain all necessary state-specific certifications
- Physical Requirements: Must be comfortable with frequent walking, standing, and use of computer systems.
