This position is represented by the Stanford Deputy Sheriff's Association (SDSA) and the collective bargaining agreement between the university and the SDSA governs the terms and conditions of employment.

**Job Purpose**
Under general supervision, a Stanford University Department of Public Safety deputy sheriff provides all aspects of general law enforcement and public safety services to the community.
Principal duties include responding to emergencies, general and directed patrol, investigation of crimes and other non-criminal incidents, traffic / bicycle enforcement and control, assisting in crime prevention activities, and other law enforcement/public safety services and duties as required. A significant degree of initiative, independent judgment, and discretion is required of incumbents to develop, maintain, and successfully perform in a community oriented, problem solving approach to policing.
A Stanford Department of Public Safety deputy must possess, maintain proficiency, and exercise the knowledge, skills and abilities necessary to perform law enforcement functions. The knowledge base and skills required for this position include, but are not limited to: an understanding of pertinent federal, state, and local laws, codes and regulations, including laws governing the apprehension, arrest, and custody of persons who are believed to have committed violations of the law; rules of evidence pertaining to search and seizure and preservation of evidence in traffic and criminal cases; techniques and applications of self- defense and proper use of force; operation and maintenance of police equipment (including, for example, a police radio system), vehicles and tools (including a variety of firearms) ; department policies and procedures; and institutional policies and procedures.
Deputies have the opportunity to participate in a number of assignments such as patrol, investigations, special events, traffic, K-9, off-road motorcycle / bicycle patrol, range master, field training officer, and various lead officer positions and potential promotional opportunities. Deputies will be assigned to rotate between units and / or other units, as appropriate, at the discretion of the Director of Public Safety.
During the course of their work, deputies will be exposed to potentially dangerous and adverse conditions. Deputies must be willing and able to work in emergency situations, confined spaces, and intense life-threatening conditions. Deputies will be exposed to persons whose actions may place them in harm's way. Deputies will be exposed to bodily fluids, fumes, moving objects, and noise. Deputies must be physically able to work in circumstances requiring running, jumping, walking, crawling, kneeling, climbing, stooping, pulling and moderate lifting.
Deputies must be willing and able to work in inclement weather conditions and able to work irregular work hours and able to work all shifts. SUDPS personnel are considered "essential" or "required" University personnel and shall respond to campus when directed to do so, even with little advanced notification.
Recognizing that Public Safety is an evolving profession, persons holding the rank of deputy must be able to respond to technological, political and social changes. Accordingly, the job responsibilities will change over time. As such, the job responsibilities of a deputy and this job description are subject to modification. Absent a higher ranking officer, the responsibility to assure shift operational efficiency shall be the primary responsibility of a deputy.
Stanford Deputy Sheriffs derive their peace officer authority through a Memorandum of Understanding between Stanford University and the Sheriff of Santa Clara County. This agreement provides for the deputization of Stanford Deputies as sworn peace officers, having full law enforcement powers to make arrest and enforce state laws and county ordinances pursuant to section 830.6 of the California Penal Code.

**Minimum Requirements**
- Satisfactory completion of a basic CA police academy or proof of satisfactory completion of the CA waiver.
- Legally able to work in California.
- 21 years of age or older.
- Vision not less than 20/100 in each eye; correctable to no less than 20/30 in each eye; without functional color blindness or impairment.
- Normal hearing in each ear.
- Graduation from High School or possession of a General Education Development (G.E.D.) certificate.
- Certificate and the completion of 45 college semester units or 60 quarter units from an accredited college.
- Not be in violation of Brady v. Maryland 373 U.S. ).
- Ability to pass a physical demands test relevant to the job requirements.
- Ability to wear and breathe through a full face piece, negative pressure, air-purifying respirator (per Cal/OSHA 8 CCR Sec. 5144, a medical clearance, fit-testing and training are required for personnel who are required to wear such respirator) and the ability to wear and breathe through a particulate mask (currently a N-95 mask).

**Field Training Program:**
· Incumbent deputies must successfully complete a field training program (approximately 16 weeks). Deputies who do not successfully complete the field training program are subject to termination.
**The expected pay range for this position is $61.02 (Step A) to $77.91 (Step 6) per hour. Placement in the pay range is subject to the applicable collective bargaining agreement.**

General Definition of Work
The Deputy Sheriff performs intermediate protective services with frequent exposure to high-risk situations. This position will exercise independent judgement in patrolling roadways and cities within the jurisdiction, enforce statutes and ordinances, make critical decisions, conduct general patrol, respond to emergency calls, monitor traffic, conduct investigations, prepare reports, develop community partnerships, and carry out special duties while using a significant degree of independent judgement and decision-making under the limited supervision of the Captain, Chief Deputy Sheriff and County Sheriff. Performs related work as apparent or assigned.

Essential Functions

Evaluates the need versus threat to initiate or terminate a high-speed pursuit. Determines if arrests are deemed lawful and follows proper statutes.
- Patrols State, County, Township, and city streets in an emergency vehicle to preserve law and order. Prevents and detects the commission of crime. Monitors multi-agency radio traffic for service. Conducts search and surveillance activities and prevents crime.
- Responds to emergency and non-emergency calls for service. Takes appropriate action when responding to dangerous and unpredictable emergency calls. Prioritizes response to non-emergency calls and acts appropriately. Triages the situation to determine what is needed to be dispatched to the scene: for example, tow trucks, fire and rescue, medical personnel, air ambulance, crash reconstruction, commercial vehicle investigators, human services, supervisors, hazardous material teams, and/or tactical response teams. Deposes victims, witnesses, suspects, and uses observations skills, and training to control the situation.
- Monitors vehicular traffic throughout the County. Enforces state and local traffic laws. Keeps current on new and changing laws, attends mandated training and meets required testing standards. Assists motorists. Locates, identifies, and processes persons driving under the influence of drugs and alcohol. Responds to and investigates all motor vehicle crashes.
- Conducts investigations. Preserves the integrity of the crime scene. Identifies, documents, collects, and preserves evidence. Interviews victims and witnesses. Develops informants and suspects. Prepares applications and serves search warrants, arrest warrants, court orders, civil papers, and commitment orders. Works effectively and cooperatively with the investigators at crime scenes and aids with follow up on cases. Provides sworn testimony during criminal and civil trials in both District and Federal Court proceedings. Evaluates the safety of a living environment for domestic disputes for children and mentally disturbed persons. Protects the rights of all persons involved. Determines case by case action for future follow up investigations.
- Prepares and records reports. Completes initial incident reports of investigated complaints and findings. Documents cases by preparing written reports, which are compiled with other law enforcement on scene to present to prosecutors, judges, probation officers, human services, and others for review of the case. Exchanges and shares information with a multitude of other law enforcement agencies from other county, city, state, and federal agencies on a day-to-day basis. Corresponds with schools, other county and city agencies such as Human Services and Environmental Services. Determines the legality and need, then completes legal and administrative documents.
- Controls individuals, their actions, and the situation. Evaluates information to determine the need to arrest a person. Gives orders to control, negotiate, and react to human behavior. Responds with tact, appropriate level of demeanor and professionalism when dealing with certain subjects or at death scenes. Assists Human Services staff with removal of children from their homes. Transports and assist probation at and during visits to client’s residences and on the street. Transports and guards suspects and prisoners in court, jail, medical, and other facilities. Assists in providing courtroom security to provide decorum, prevent injury and escape.
- Carries out special duties. Additional duties within the Sheriff's Office may include, but are not limited to; Field Training Officer, Defensive Tactics Instructor, Firearms Instructor, Canine Handler, Taser Instructor, Special Weapons and Tactics Operator, ARMER Radio Instructor, Towards Zero Deaths Enforcement Grant Coordinator, Snowmobile/ATV Safety Instructor, Water Patrol Deputy, and Water Emergency Response Team. Participates in training and develops a specialized skill set or base of knowledge. Patrols water areas and snowmobile trails. Performs specialized water rescue and search and recovery for victims and property. Responds to severe weather emergencies.
- Provides credible testimony in court. Attends and testifies in criminal and civil court proceedings. Represents the interests of the county, state, and federal government. Makes a verbal account for observations, actions, and findings while performing official duties.

Education and Experience
Minimum Qualifications: Enrolled in or completed an associates/technical degree program in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field. Must be licensed or eligible to be licensed as a peace officer in the state of MN at the time of hire.
Preferred Qualifications: Bachelors degree in criminal justice, law enforcement, or related field.
Physical Requirements

Special Requirements
- Minnesota peace officer standards and training (POST) license.
- CPR/first aid, first responder and defibrillator certification.
- Must successfully pass a psychological evaluation, physical examination and background check.
- Must possess a valid driver’s license and be able to drive in the State of Minnesota.
- Must comply with all federal and state laws and organizational and departmental policies and regulations.
- Must qualify with firearms within existing departmental qualification standards.
- Must submit to fingerprinting and a check of those fingerprints through the FBI and Minnesota BCA.
- Must frequently wear a bullet-resistant vest while on duty.
- Required POST mandated training will be provided and certifications must be maintained and completed on an ongoing, scheduled basis.
Other Requirements
The incumbent may encounter not public data in the course of these duties. Any access to not public data should be strictly limited to accessing the data that are necessary to fulfill the employment responsibility. While data are being accessed, incumbent should take reasonable measures to ensure the not public data are not accessed by individuals without a work reason. Once the work reason to access the data is reasonably finished, incumbent must properly store the not public data according to the provisions Ch. 13. Position Summary
The purpose of this position is to protect life and property in Murray County and to enforce City Ordinances, County, State and Federal Laws. Duties include but are not limited to investigating criminal activity; interviewing victims, interrogating suspects; writing reports; responding to accidents; civil process; prisoner transport; evidence collection; serving warrants; executing of court orders; responding to law enforcement related calls and assist the County Sheriff.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities

- Interview suspects, victims, witnesses and involved parties;
- Responsible for evidence handling;
- Responsible for filing requests for formal criminal charges, search warrant applications, search warrant execution and coordination with other agencies;
- Provide communication regarding ongoing investigations.
Serves as Patrol Officer
- Patrol Town and Roadways and respond to emergency calls according to policies and procedures;
- Investigate crimes, make arrests and collect evidence; which includes interviewing suspects, collecting evidence and coordinating with other agencies;
- Transport prisoners and court security and prepare and testify in court;
- Coordinate in civil defense emergencies and provide support in rescuing individuals;
- Provide Murray Court with information regarding cases and provide court testimony and evidence to support the court process;
- Establish and maintain effective relationships with surrounding EMS, FIRE, First Responders and other agencies dealing with accidents and 911 calls;
- Provides supervision of work to Dispatch and Jr. Officers and Part-Time Deputies, in absence of the Sheriff;
- Joint Agency investigations or EMS related incidents result in supervision by Deputy Sheriff at the time of incident or investigation;
· Provide departmental assistance.

Physical Demands and Working Conditions

• This position works a combination of days, nights, and weekends. On call requires the employee to stay home and answer calls and be available to respond to a call within a reasonable period of time. The schedule can be a combination of 8, 10, and 12 hours shifts as determined by the Sheriff or Chief Deputy.
• Exposure to outdoor weather conditions, extreme cold (non-weather) and extreme heat (non-weather) is frequent. Working in fumes or airborne particles amounts is occasional. Time is spent in wet humid conditions (non-weather), working near moving mechanical parts, working with explosives and vibration is rare.
• Employee is frequently involved in areas of loud noise.
Equipment Utilized
• Majority of the time is spent operating equipment, such as squad car, squad radio, radar unit, siren, lights, portable radio, shotgun, handgun, boat, jet skis, and snowmobile.
