Horizons Greater Washington is seeking a Development Manager to lead and expand institutional and individual giving efforts to ensure HGW's financial sustainability and growth.
This is a full-time salaried position at 40 hours per week, with a salary range of $75,000-85,000 per year. The position comes with and benefits including health, dental, vision, life, and short- and long-term disability insurance, and 401k, 10 paid holidays, in addition to the week off between Christmas Day and New Year's Day, and 15 equivalent days of Paid Time Off (PTO).

Work Hours and Schedule
This full-time, 40 hours per week position is hybrid remote and in-person throughout the year. During the academic year, the expectation is to be in person for once-weekly staff meetings and also for donor meetings and events as needed. During the five-week Summer Academy, there will be more in-person events with funding tours and meetings.

Position Description
The Development Manager leads and expands institutional and individual giving efforts to ensure HGW's financial sustainability and growth. This role is responsible for grant writing and management, donor cultivation, development operations, and fundraising communications , working closely with the Executive Director and development team.
Key Responsibilities
Institutional Giving (Foundations, Corporate, & Government)
- Research, write, and submit compelling grant proposals, letters of inquiry, and reports to sustain and grow foundation, corporate, and government funding.
- Identify all grant requirements , proactively communicate financial and programmatic needs to the CFO, and ensure timely preparation and submission of all necessary documents.
- Maintain a grant calendar to track deadlines, funder engagement, and reporting requirements.
- Maintain and strengthen relationships with existing funders by providing regular program updates and engagement opportunities.
- Prepare briefings, presentations, and talking points to equip the Executive Director and development lead for funder meetings.
- Identify, qualify, and recommend new institutional funding opportunities aligned with HGW's strategic vision.
- Support Development Director and Executive Director in securing and stewarding foundation and corporate opportunities above $0,000 annually, preparing relevant communications and materials as needed.
- Fully manage a small portfolio of institutional donors (prospect, qualify, cultivate, solicit, and regularly engage) a portfolio of institutional funders committing less than 50,000 annually.
- Lead donor cultivation and stewardship efforts for annual and monthly donors who give less than 5,000 annually.
- Develop and execute strategies to engage and retain donors through personalized outreach, email communications, newsletters, and programmatic tours.
- Create and manage a donor engagement calendar , ensuring a strategic balance of cultivation, solicitation, and stewardship throughout the year.
- Propose individual campaign strategies and take lead role in creating all materials and copy , including messaging, themes, and timelines.
- At the direction of the Director of Development, create and manage all direct mail collateral, email, and social media appeals; donor segmentation; and board engagement materials.
- Support the Development Director and Executive Director with host school campaign efforts , providing messaging and branding support, on-site assistance if needed, and donor tracking and acknowledgement.
- Support the Development Director and Executive Director to grow the major gifts portfolio, conducting prospect research, preparing compelling solicitation materials and pitches, and assisting with tracking major gift progress and moves management, as needed.
- Stay informed of fundraising trends to enhance donor engagement strategies, piloting new initiatives to increase donor base and revenue.
- Monitor campaign performance, analyze results , and oversee timely donor acknowledgments and recognition .
- Oversee and maintain the CRM system (donor database) to ensure data integrity and timely updates.
- Ensure proper gift processing, donor acknowledgments, and financial reconciliation with the CFO.
- Track and analyze fundraising performance , using data insights to inform strategic decisions.
- Support the overall communications strategy by creating consistent, compelling messaging across all donor and external communications .
- Support marketing and storytelling efforts , including social media, newsletters, and the annual report .
- Proofread and refine external-facing materials for accuracy and alignment with HGW's voice.
- Assist in planning and executing fundraising events , including the annual gala .
- Collaborate on event strategy and donor engagement , developing messaging and sponsorship materials .
- Support event logistics , including sponsor tracking, response coordination, and recognition efforts.
Qualifications & Competencies
- 3+ years of experience in fundraising, grant writing, donor relations, or nonprofit development.
- Strong writing and communication skills with experience crafting compelling grant proposals and donor materials.
- Experience with CRM/database management (e.g., Salesforce, Network for Good, DonorPerfect, or similar).
- Ability to analyze fundraising data and develop targeted engagement strategies.
- Highly organized, detail-oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
- Demonstrates a commitment to equity in fundraising by fostering donor partnerships focused on transformative impact rather than transactions, and utilizing strengths-based storytelling that uplifts program participants and families.

**Responsibilities**
+ Generate revenue by prospecting and securing local corporate sponsorship and individual donations. Achieve revenue goals by building and maintaining relationships with corporate partners and donors.
+ Build and maintain a pipeline of prospective corporate sponsors and donors by conducting research that matches the campaign goals and the Association's mission.
+ Develop and present proposals and accompanying materials to secure revenue and volunteer engagement.
