Developing medium- and long-range distribution plans focusing on load relief, capacity, and reliability will be a key part of your role. You'll create and maintain computer models and their underlying databases for electric distribution systems, and conduct load forecasts, including DER, energy storage, and emerging electrification-related loads. You'll collaborate closely with internal teams, such as transmission, substation, and distribution design teams as well as the SCADA Automation team, to ensure seamless integration and efficiency. Lastly, you'll work independently while also coaching and mentoring less experienced engineers, fostering a culture of continuous learning and development.

The Planning team is responsible for the expansion of the distribution system for new demands (new growth, building electrification, electric vehicles) and distributed generation (solar, batteries, synchronous generation, wind). The Planning team studies these new demands and large generators to ensure safety and reliability of the distribution system. The Planning team develops short-term and long-term plans to expand the capacity of the distribution system to support company, state and policy goals.
Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:
+ Work with the Planning Engineers to support distribution system studies and project development.
+ Perform tasks such as power flow studies, distribution project development, developing long-range distribution plans and evaluating community solar garden interconnection studies.
+ Through practical operations experience and mentoring, a successful candidate will gain significant understanding of the grid, gain valuable professional experience, and develop communication and people skills.
This position is for a _May 2026_ _start._ These positions may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel's business needs.
**Minimum Requirements**
+ Current student, _Sophomore status (as of May 2026)_ or higher.
+ Enrolled in an ABET accredited college or university and pursuing a degree in Engineering.
+ Able to commute to selected work location in either Amarillo or Lubbock, TX

The candidate should possess solid analytical distribution experience, including load flow for both traditional planning studies and for studies driven by regulatory compliance requirements, distribution protection system, and self-healing network configurations. Familiarity and experience with distribution policy, and regulatory issues is also considered a plus, including experience with arc flash assessments.
**Background Requirements:**
+ Bachelors in Electrical Engineering or related engineering degree is required and 2+ years of experience
