JOB SUMMARY

This position is located in the D.C. Department of Motor Vehicles, Driver Services Administration. The incumbent administers the road test examination to applicants for motor vehicle driver license to assure that applicants meet minimum driving standards and requirements for operation of commercial and noncommercial motor vehicles. The incumbent of this position will administer commercial and noncommercial examinations, including pre-trip inspections, basic vehicle control tests and road tests for applicants, as well as, special category applicants, e.g., elderly, handicapped, deaf, and non-English speaking or limited English-speaking ability.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

Assesses the mechanical and mental ability of the applicant to safely operate a motor vehicle, while conducting the road test examination. In the event that an applicant demonstrates that they could be a potential threat to public safety the incumbent may be required to take over the vehicle and/or rejects the applicants. Recommends to applicant, as requested, remedial action necessary to correct deficiencies in knowledge of traffic regulations, vision, or driving techniques and advises applicant of next date of eligibility for re-examination. Exercises diplomacy and patience and maintains favorable demeanor while conducting licensing process.

Explains policies, federal and state laws, and regulations, CDL requirements and application process to applicants. Examines court documents to verify name changes and divorce decrees. Reviews court disposition of driving offenses; considers charges and types of violations for which there have been convictions; and accepts or rejects license examination applicants based on a review of the facts and compliance or lack of compliance with departmental policies.

QUALIFICATIONS AND EDUCATION

Specialized experience is experience which is directly related to the position which has equipped the individual with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position. To be creditable, the incumbent must possess at least one (1) year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade level in the normal line of progression.

LICENSE AND CERTIFICATION

Incumbent must process and maintain a valid Commercial Driver License (CDL-Class A).

WORKING CONDITIONS/ENVIRONMENT

The incumbent is required to work in both an office environment, as well as outdoors. The incumbent is exposed to all kinds of weather conditions. There are potential hazards involved in this work since the incumbent road tests applicants in wet, hot, cold and dry weather. Road tests are given to applicants who possess varying degrees of proficiency in the operation and control of motor vehicles. Work can be dangerous in that most of the applicants are new drivers, and their level of proficiency might not be adequate for them to be safe drivers. On occasions, you may be required to take over the vehicle to prevent an accident during the road test examination. The work requires a great deal of standing and walking; constant talking; and monitoring and sometime driving a motor vehicle.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

THE POSITION

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

In this position, you will play a vital role in delivering driver licensing services to the public. Your duties will include warmly welcoming customers, verifying their identification, assisting with application processes, and inputting data into online licensing systems. You will also provide necessary forms and informational brochures tailored to each customer's needs. A key aspect of your role will involve administering standardized knowledge tests to evaluate applicants' understanding of motor vehicle laws, as well as conducting vision screenings with a telebinocular instrument. Accuracy in data entry, addressing public inquiries, and ensuring customers are informed about available services, including REAL ID requirements and various licensing options, will be essential to your success.

Work Schedule and Additional Information:
  • Full-time employment, 80 hours bi-weekly
  • Work hours are 8:15 AM to 4:45 PM, Tuesday - Saturday, with a 30-minute lunch.
  • Overtime and travel when needed
