Job Location: On site at the 245G treatment program

Summary:

Responsible for performing substance use disorder assessments, participating in and contributing to interdisciplinary treatment and discharge plans and providing individual and group substance use disorder counseling services. The alcohol and drug counselor will have skills to carry out the 12 core functions and all other counseling duties identified by Minnesota statute 245G in individual and group settings.

The LADC position will support anti-oppressive/anti-racist practice, and trauma-responsive practice in all aspects of their interactions with staff, community, and company stakeholders through their administrative and operations support of program staff working on site and in community to address socioeconomic and health disparity. Comfort and proven experience and interest in working with staff with a range of identities including age, developmental and acquired disabilities, religion, spirituality, ethnicity, race, socio-economic status, sexual orientation, relationship structure, indigenous heritage, national origin, immigration status, and gender is required.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Complete assessments and treatment plans utilizing ASAM criteria and sound clinical writing
  • Facilitate intake, orientation, group activities, individual counseling and family counseling for clients in the program. Facilitate 5-6 groups per week for part-time, 9-10 groups per week for full-time
  • Manage an individual caseload not to exceed 7 clients for part-time, 14 clients for full-time
  • Work closely with clients to engage them in the decision-making process and help them understand the benefits of assessment and accessing the appropriate level of care as indicated
  • Collect and review referral information upon assignment of clients from the referral source and consult with others as needed to support coordination of services and scheduling of client interviews
  • Coordinate with other providers to ensure comprehensive care and document accordingly
  • Advocate for participants within systems to ensure equitable and quality care
  • Collect information from collateral resources to aid in determining level of support and need for treatment
  • Work collaboratively with client's funding sources to obtain initial authorizations for reimbursement for intervention and recovery support services
  • Complete paperwork requirements and maintain quality, up-to-date clinical records, including Outcomes Survey information and information for invoicing; enter necessary information into the electronic medical records (EMR) system
  • Attend and participate in weekly staffing to coordinate care and consult
  • Other related duties may be assigned

Qualifications/Experience:

  • Bachelor's degree in alcohol and drug counseling
  • 270 Classroom hours in alcohol and drug counseling curriculum
  • Completion of 880 hours of alcohol and drug counseling practicum
  • Knowledge and experience using Procentive.
  • 2+ years of experience as a LADC / SUD Assessor.
  • Stay current regarding professional research, techniques, etc.
  • Complete continuing education courses in current treatment concepts and methods as required by the State of Minnesota to maintain an active LADC licensure status.
  • Attend in-house training and staff meetings.
  • Intersectional lens, cultural humility, and awareness of own areas of privilege.
  • Strong interpersonal skills including strong oral, written, and listening communication abilities.
  • Time management, initiative, and organizational skills required to be successful in this role.

Supervisory Responsibilities:

The LADC role operates in a hybrid environment, including on-site work at Roots Wellness Center, community locations, and occasionally remote settings. Workspaces include office areas for administrative and counseling tasks, group therapy rooms for facilitating sessions, and other environments such as courtrooms or legal offices when coordinating with the legal system.

We are currently seeking a residential Licensed Drug and Alcohol Counselor who will deliver Substance Use Disorder treatment under 245G licensing requirements.


Essential Functions :

  • Complete all intake paperwork, including initial services plans and vulnerable adult screenings.
  • Complete comprehensive assessments and summaries, develop and update individual treatment plans, complete weekly treatment plan reviews, provide treatment coordination, and complete insurance forms.
  • Ability to provide counseling on an individual and group basis to achieve individual treatment plan goals.
  • Complete discharge summaries
  • Strong interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to use a computer and applications that are associated with performing basic work tasks.
  • Pursue professional training and skills development, and practice with respect to all codes of conduct and ethical boundaries.

Other Requirements:

  • Must be 18 years of age or older.
  • Must be free of problematic substance use for at least two years immediately preceding hiring and must sign a statement testifying to that fact.
  • Must meet the following requirements of 245G.11 subd. 5:
  • (a) An alcohol and drug counselor must either be licensed or exempt from licensure under chapter 148F.
  • (b) An individual who is exempt from licensure under chapter 148F, must meet one of the following additional requirements:
  • (1) completion of at least a baccalaureate degree with a major or concentration in social work, nursing, sociology, human services, or psychology, or licensure as a registered nurse; successful completion of a minimum of 120 hours of classroom instruction in which each of the core functions listed in chapter 148F is covered; and successful completion of 440 hours of supervised experience as an alcohol and drug counselor, either as a student or a staff member;
  • (2) completion of at least 270 hours of drug counselor training in which each of the core functions listed in chapter 148F is covered, and successful completion of 880 hours of supervised experience as an alcohol and drug counselor, either as a student or as a staff member;
  • (3) current certification as an alcohol and drug counselor or alcohol and drug counselor reciprocal, through the evaluation process established by the International Certification and Reciprocity Consortium Alcohol and Other Drug Abuse, Inc.;
  • (4) completion of a bachelor's degree including 480 hours of alcohol and drug counseling education from an accredited school or educational program and 880 hours of alcohol and drug counseling practicum; or
  • (5) employment in a program formerly licensed under Minnesota Rules, parts 9530.5000 to 9530.6400, and successful completion of 6,000 hours of supervised work experience in a licensed program as an alcohol and drug counselor prior to January 1, 2005.
  • (c) An alcohol and drug counselor may not provide a treatment service that requires professional licensure unless the individual possesses the necessary license. For the purposes of enforcing this section, the commissioner has the authority to monitor a service provider's compliance with the relevant standards of the service provider's profession and may issue licensing actions against the license holder according to sections 245A.05, 245A.06, and 245A.07, based on the commissioner's determination of noncompliance.

Required Skills Required:
  • The individual must have current Minnesota State Licensure as an Alcohol and Drug Counselor meeting all requirements of Minnesota Statue 148F. Revised: February 2025
  • Minimum 1 year experience in a chemical dependency facility or related and 2-3 years related experience required, or any combination of education and experience that provides equivalent knowledge, skills, and abilities.
  • Must know and understand all rules, regulations, and requirements of the assigned program.
  • A minimum of two-year freedom from chemical abuse problems.

JOB DESCRIPTION

An Alcohol and Drug Counselor functions as a member of the treatment team. He/she conducts group therapy and individual counseling, provides education, and completes all the necessary documentation for the clients assigned to him/her. An Alcohol and Drug Counselor can perform all the 12 core functions required for a licensed alcohol and drug counselor. This individual is allowed to admit, transfer, or discharge clients when holding an LADC or ADC-T credential.



PRIMARY RESPONSIBILITIES

Group Therapy

Individual Therapy

Treatment Planning

Comprehensive Assessment

Ability to perform ALL 12 core functions of an addiction counselor

Adhere to all county, state, and federal law regarding substance use disorder treatment and

confidentiality.

QUALIFICATIONS

Must be 18 years of age or older

Must be free from problematic use of substances

Must pass a DHS background study

Must be qualified under Minnesota Statutes, chapter 148F as licensed, Temporary License, or enrolled in a qualified training program and practicing as an intern with a qualified BBHT supervisor.

Ability to utilize computer systems such as all components of Microsoft Office, electronic medical records, and other cloud-based or internet-based applications.
