Position Summary:
Learning Specialist Position - Nancy and Donald Resnick Academic Support Center for Student-Athletes
The Nancy & Donald Resnick Academic Center for Student-Athletes (RAC) provides comprehensive academic advising and support services for Temple's 500 student-athletes. The Learning Specialist position is responsible for working directly with a caseload of student-athletes to facilitate the enhancement of their skills needed to be successful at the university level. The position follows a 10-month schedule, with the months of June and July designated as non-working months.
The Learning Specialist will assist in identifying student learning difficulties, coordinating referrals leading to appropriate testing and diagnosis, and will act as liaison to the Office of Disability Resources and Services (DRS). In addition, the Learning Specialist also works with other members of the Resnick Academic Support Center to provide and coordinate a full range of support in addressing student athletes' academic and study skill needs. The learning specialist works one on one with student-athletes to develop strategies to promote academic success. The successful candidate will be skilled at creating rapport and building productive relationships with student-athletes, while assisting colleagues in the development of a student-centered, service-oriented program of support. The learning specialist oversee the tutorial support program, which includes recruiting, hiring, training, and scheduling tutoring appointments each semester. Perform other related duties as assigned.
Education and Experience:
Bachelor's Degree in education, school psychology or related field and at least three years of directly related experience. At least one year of experience providing supplemental support for students with disabilities. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.
Preferred Education and Experience:
* Master's degree in a related field.
* Experience working directly with student-athletes in the college setting.
* Familiarity with the technology available to enhance learning.
* Experience delivering various learning assessments (LASSI, Nelson-Denny, etc.).
Essential Functions of Position
*Assists student-athletes with learning disabilities by implementing specific study skill strategies and techniques to facilitate the development of long-term academic skills. Utilize scientifically proven interventions to improve efficacy in writing, reading, and executive functioning.
*Assists with the process of registering for accommodations with the Office of Disability Resources and Services and helps the student-athletes understand how to best utilize them. Promote the use of assistive technology as a supplemental learning tool.
*Support students in developing self-advocacy skills.
*Develops an appropriate strategic plan to enhance and facilitate learning and independent study for assigned collegiate student-athletes.
*Support students in developing self-advocacy skills.
*Demonstrates proficiency with engaging small groups and individuals in the implementation of instructional plans.
*Monitors the effectiveness of student-athletes instructional plans
*Facilitates a comprehensive assessment plan to create individual learning profiles for all Temple student-athletes.
*Collaborates with staff to determine the appropriate level of support.
*When necessary, serve as a referral to local practitioners for additional screening.
*Fill tutor requests and manage tutor appointment schedules
*Conduct tutor trainings, prepare training materials and workshop training for tutors
*Track quantitative data to assess the progress of the tutorial program
*Recruitment; identify needs of tutorial support program, including hiring, and new tutor on-boarding
*Supervise tutors, conduct performance evaluations, provide progress feedback

- Prepares resources and materials to deliver program activities as well as pack up, clean, organize and store resources and materials.
- Welcomes and greets visitors to the Museum and provides information and assistance where required.
- Contributes to research and writing of resources and interpretive materials.

- Strong knowledge of modern and contemporary art and art practices.
- Undergraduate degree in art history, art education, related field, or equivalent experience.
- Demonstrated ability in guiding patrons or participants in discussions on art history, artists' processes, research, and art communities.
- Experience with programming for specific groups such as students (pre-kindergarten - 12th grade), college, older adults, culturally-specific groups, visitors with disabilities or specific needs, neurodiverse audiences, etc. preferred.
- Familiar with a range of strategies and techniques to engage and facilitate observational, thematic, and project-based learning including: knowledge and understanding of stages of human development, ability to implement various learning theories, and teaching strategies, including VTS (Visual Teaching Strategies), inquiry-based and dialogic teaching, and culturally responsive pedagogy.
- Experience in facilitating and working with a variety of art techniques and mediums.
- Familiarity with developing curriculum and instructional materials utilizing the concepts outlined in the position summary above.
- Willingness and ability to work both independently and collaboratively within the Learning and Engagement department to prepare resources and materials for program activities.
- Excellent verbal communication skills and poise, including experience in mediating and facilitating conversations with individuals from different cultural backgrounds, age ranges, abilities, and attitudes.
- Adaptable with an ability to think on one’s feet and improvise as a form of problem solving.

Position responsibilities include:
- Meeting with students individually as needed to support the OASC Assistant Director in providing learning evaluations and assessments, consultation, coaching, and/or referral to assist in development of academic success strategies and personal well-being.
- Developing, monitoring, and adjusting individual learning plans for students at-risk for academic difficulty or in academic jeopardy, including development of learning and study skills, critical thinking, self and time management, test-taking and prep strategies, and maintaining an appropriate balance between life and school.
- Conducting and reporting on learning evaluations and assessments that identify individual learning needs.
- Supporting student needs related to disability accommodations, including overseeing the annual review of student accommodation attestations and making the relevant updates regarding needed accommodations.
- Assisting in identifying, training, and supervising Near Peer Support Team members, using student academic performance and faculty input.
- Developing and delivering workshops and independent learning modules to enhance effective learning techniques based on learning theory and evidence-based strategies.
- Updating and maintaining databases of records related to monitoring student progress, academic support services needed and provided, and related outcomes.
- Assisting the OASC Assistant Director in tracking and monitoring students engaged in off-cycle curricular plans, customized schedules, or Leave of Absences (LOA).
- Assisting in identifying and tracking outside student academic support and counseling services.
- Supporting and attending student functions as appropriate (e.g., OASC workshops and panel discussions, orientation, Near Peer Support Team training).
- Meeting weekly with the OASC Assistant Director to review progress of students receiving or in need of OASC support.
- Ongoing supervision of the OASC Administrative Assistant II.
- Performing other duties as necessary.
Minimum Qualifications Required - Knowledge, Skill and Ability
- Masters degree with a focus on education, psychology, cognitive and learning skills, basic sciences, or closely related field.
- Minimum 3 years related experience in academic setting providing intervention strategies to diverse learners in graduate or professional degree programs.
- Training and experience in utilizing and interpreting psycho-educational test instruments and write up of findings.
- Excellent advising/counseling skills and strong interpersonal/human relations and collaboration skills.
- Experience in conducting educational workshops, seminars, and panel discussions for large audiences.
- Excellent interpersonal and teamwork skills, including oral and written communication skills.
- Demonstrated conceptual, analytical, organizational, and time management skills.
- Innovative, empathetic, and proactive solution-oriented approach to sensitive and complex problems, including flexibility in meeting the various needs of students.
- Knowledge of student and patient privacy regulations (FERPA, HIPAA, etc) and ability to maintain strictest standards regarding confidentiality of all student information.
- Ability to keep abreast of advances in evidence-based learning theories and practices and integrate them into student academic advising and coaching.
- Strong knowledge of Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, Teams, Sharepoint, Forms) and management of different computer programs and databases.
Preferred Qualifications
- Experience in medical and/or graduate education and administration, with demonstrated success in developing and implementing academic support and cognitive/learning skills services for professional students (MD, PhD, MSTP).
- Knowledge of best practices in areas related to equal access for students with disabilities in graduate health science education.
- Experience in medical and/or graduate education with demonstrated success in implementing academic support and cognitive skills services.
- Experience with standardized examinations (e.g., NBME subject examinations, USMLE Step 1, Step 2 and Step 3).
- Experience as an academic counselor, coach, or mentor.
- Experience teaching at the college and/or graduate level.
- Knowledge of Section 504 of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 and Section 508 of the Rehabilitation Act Amendments of 1998, the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA of 1990), the Americans with Disabilities Act Amendments Act (ADAAA) of 2008
