Job Description
At PNNL, our core capabilities are divided among major departments that we refer to as Directorates within the Lab, focused on a specific area of scientific research or other function, with its own leadership team and dedicated budget.
Our Science & Technology directorates include National Security, Earth and Biological Sciences, Physical and Computational Sciences, and Energy and Environment. In addition, we have an Environmental Molecular Sciences Laboratory, a Department of Energy, Office of Science user facility housed on the PNNL campus.
The National Security Directorate (NSD) drives science-based, mission-focused solutions to take on complex, real-world threats to our nation and the world.
The Nuclear, Chemical, and Biological Technologies Division, within the National Security Directorate, works across fundamental science, research and development, and operations to counter emerging national security threats. We focus on discovering signatures and understanding threats by creating materials, methods, and technologies to detect and analyze them. Our researchers deliver the solutions necessary for addressing complex mission challenges, such as explosives detection, biological threat detection, chemical and nuclear forensics, and special nuclear materials.
**Responsibilities**
The Radiochemistry Group is seeking a highly motivated individual with a strong ethic of service to the scientific community and a commitment to both scientific excellence and national impact on critical scientific and technical problems.
This opening is to support the goals of the Environmental Signatures Team, which broadly encompasses tracing natural and anthropogenic processes (including investigations of contaminant fate and transport and migratory behaviors) as well as National Security applications such as nuclear safeguards.
The candidate should have significant, hands-on experience in thermal ionization mass spectrometry (TIMS), multi-collector inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (MC-ICP-MS), and/or other cutting-edge mass spectrometry. Pertinent additional experience would include platinum group element (PGE) analyses as well as the development or implementation of new isotope systems and techniques in the laboratory. Additional experience that would be of value include working with diverse sample matrixes and low-level clean lab and separations work (ion or solvent exchange, distillation).
The candidate should be able to receive guidance on new assignments, making preliminary selections on technical alternatives, and then work independently on tasks. The candidate is expected to mentor junior staff and contribute equally to small team projects.
The successful candidate will work as part of a multi-disciplinary team and will have access to state-of-the-art research equipment within several laboratories at PNNL, including a suite of eight multicollection mass spectrometers and associated supporting analytical instruments and facilities. The successful candidate will be expected to enthusiastically contribute to the development of proposals for future research funding. Candidates must be able to work with colleagues in a laboratory environment on the implementation of experimental procedures.
**Qualifications**
Minimum Qualifications:

Preferred Qualifications:
+ Ph.D. in geochemistry, isotope geology, analytical or nuclear chemistry, or a related field plus 2 years of relevant experience preferred.

+ Strong written and oral communication skills as evidenced by scientific publication and conference presentations within the past five years.
+ The ideal candidate is a well-organized, self-starter, with a high capacity for attention to detail. Time management skills are essential to balance activities among several concurrently operating projects.
+ The incumbent must have experience working in a wet-chemistry laboratory around potentially hazardous acids/ bases and radiological materials.

**Additional Information**

Position Overview
ERT is seeking a Chief Software Engineer to support tasks at the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC). The key foci of this work for supporting the Unified Forecast System (UFS) models are to support the maintenance and expansion of EPIC; enhance collaboration within the earth sciences communities supporting USF and with NOAA; accelerate expansion of a publicly accessible end-to-end testing and development environment from pre- to post-processing and hosted with cloud computing resources. The ideal candidate will bring innovative ideas to enhance the modeling framework of the UFS and substantial experience with large-scale earth system numerical modeling and compute infrastructure.
The successful candidate will coordinate and oversee implementation of the design and coding of software components that meet product specification and development schedules for a scientific software development lifecycle; will oversee testing and debugging of assigned components adhering to product build and release schedules and strategies; and will adopt and implement strong configuration management practices, policies, and collaboration tools for management of source code, bugs, documentation and team workflow collaboration. The Chief Software Engineer will evaluate performance results and recommend changes affecting both short-term and long-term project growth and success; will function as a technical expert across multiple project assignments, implementing automated testing scripts where applicable and using agile coding practices to incorporate team and customer feedback quickly.
Required Skills
- 10+ years of experience with increasing responsibility and leadership in a scientific software engineering development role.

Compensation
The salary range for this role is $62,000 - 275,000/year. This range is a good faith estimate based on similar roles across the organization. Will provide technical guidance for directing and monitoring information systems operations to support tasks at National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's (NOAA) Earth Prediction Innovation Center (EPIC). Analyze network traffic and provides capacity planning solutions. Will monitor and respond to complex technical control facility hardware and software problems. Interfaces with vendor support service groups to ensure proper escalation during outages or periods of degraded system performance. Manage the purchase, testing, installation, and support of network communications, including LAN/MAN/WAN systems. Perform system-level design and configuration of products including determination of hardware, OS, and other platform specifications. Additional duties include:
- Plans large-scale systems projects through vendor comparison and cost studies.
- Perform a variety of systems engineering tasks and activities that are broad in nature and are concerned with major systems design, integration, and implementation, including personnel, hardware, software, budgetary, and support facilities and/or equipment.
- Provide quality assurance review and the evaluation of new and existing software products.

Compensation
The salary range for this role is $48,000 - 269,000/year. This range is a good faith estimate based on similar roles across the organization. ERT considers several factors when extending an offer of employment, including the location, scope, and associated responsibilities of the specific position, as well as a candidate's work experience, education/training, and key skills.

Qualifications:
