Job Description
Anthropic's mission is to create reliable, interpretable, and steerable AI systems. We want AI to be safe and beneficial for our users and for society as a whole. Our team is a quickly growing group of committed researchers, engineers, policy experts, and business leaders working together to build beneficial AI systems.
Anthropic is looking for a creative technologist to join our Editorial team. You will translate cutting-edge AI research into compelling online experiences that, to put it mildly, blow people's minds. You'll work at the intersection of storytelling, research, and technology, bringing your innovative ideas to help the world understand both the benefits and risks of advanced AI systems.
In this role, you'll partner closely with our research teams (such as the Frontier Red Team) and external collaborators to design and prototype novel AI experiences. From whimsical experiments to more substantial technical demonstrations, you'll help craft narratives around AI capabilities that resonate with both technical and general audiences. This role is in keeping with the Editorial team's mission of telling Anthropic's stories in a refreshingly frank and candid manner.
This is a unique opportunity to shape how people experience and understand frontier AI. You'll have the creative freedom to explore ideas while working within a mission-driven organization. Your work will span from hands-on prototyping and building, to collaborating with communications, policy, and research teams on high-visibility projects that will be shared publicly.
Responsibilities
- Build off-the-wall, unusual interactive experiences such as installations, apps, and web experiences that demonstrate model capabilities (and limitations)
- Collaborate with research teams to translate technical breakthroughs and model behaviors into tangible, user-facing demonstrations that grab the attention of our audience and make them think about AI in a different way
- Lead technical implementation for projects like Vend, working with external partners to spec and develop new features
- Prototype novel interaction modes and creative applications of frontier AI models
- Identify high-impact storytelling opportunities and create technical artifacts, demos, and experiences for editorial, communications, and policy initiatives
- Analyze data from experimental deployments to generate insights about AI behavior and user interactions
- Build and maintain tools and infrastructure to support rapid prototyping and experimentation with AI models
- Have 5+ years of experience building creative technology projects or interactive experiences
- Have hands-on experience working with large language models and AI APIs
- You can code fluently and ship production-quality work (experience with web, mobile, or physical computing)
- You possess strong creative instincts and can identify what makes compelling AI demonstrations
- You are comfortable working across the full stack-from concept to implementation to deployment
- You thrive in fast-paced, ambiguous environments where you define your own path
- You excel at collaborating with both technical and non-technical stakeholders
- Have a portfolio or body of work that demonstrates technical creativity
- A research engineering background.
- Experience with experimental or speculative design
- Strong, evocative written communication skills
- Background in creative coding, interactive media, or digital art
- Published work, installations, or projects that explore technology and culture
- Experience prototyping with emerging technologies (AR/VR, IoT, robotics, etc.)
- Data visualization or creative data science experience
- Understanding of AI safety considerations and responsible AI deployment
- Active presence in creative technology communities
- Experience working in agency, lab, or startup environments
- Familiarity with both research and editorial/content workflows
- Track record of projects that have reached public audiences
The Editorial team is responsible for shaping how Anthropic communicates about AI-from written research publications to public-facing demonstrations. We believe that creative, hands-on experiences are one of the most effective ways to build understanding about both the opportunities and challenges of advanced AI systems. This role will work embedded with the Editorial team while collaborating extensively with teams across the organization.
Deadline to apply: None. Applications will be reviewed on a rolling basis.
The expected base compensation for this position is below. Our total compensation package for full-time employees includes equity, benefits, and may include incentive compensation.
Annual Salary:
$200,000-$255,000 USD
Logistics
Education requirements: We require at least a Bachelor's degree in a related field or equivalent experience.Location-based hybrid policy: Currently, we expect all staff to be in one of our offices at least 25% of the time. However, some roles may require more time in our offices.
Visa sponsorship: We do sponsor visas! However, we aren't able to successfully sponsor visas for every role and every candidate. But if we make you an offer, we will make every reasonable effort to get you a visa, and we retain an immigration lawyer to help with this.
We encourage you to apply even if you do not believe you meet every single qualification. Not all strong candidates will meet every single qualification as listed. Research shows that people who identify as being from underrepresented groups are more prone to experiencing imposter syndrome and doubting the strength of their candidacy, so we urge you not to exclude yourself prematurely and to submit an application if you're interested in this work. We think AI systems like the ones we're building have enormous social and ethical implications. We think this makes representation even more important, and we strive to include a range of diverse perspectives on our team.
How we're different
We believe that the highest-impact AI research will be big science. At Anthropic we work as a single cohesive team on just a few large-scale research efforts. And we value impact - advancing our long-term goals of steerable, trustworthy AI - rather than work on smaller and more specific puzzles. We view AI research as an empirical science, which has as much in common with physics and biology as with traditional efforts in computer science. We're an extremely collaborative group, and we host frequent research discussions to ensure that we are pursuing the highest-impact work at any given time. As such, we greatly value communication skills.
The easiest way to understand our research directions is to read our recent research. This research continues many of the directions our team worked on prior to Anthropic, including: GPT-3, Circuit-Based Interpretability, Multimodal Neurons, Scaling Laws, AI & Compute, Concrete Problems in AI Safety, and Learning from Human Preferences.
Come work with us!
Anthropic is a public benefit corporation headquartered in San Francisco. We offer competitive compensation and benefits, optional equity donation matching, generous vacation and parental leave, flexible working hours, and a lovely office space in which to collaborate with colleagues.
