Lab Manager - Woodshop & Three-Dimensional Studies

SUMMARY

The Columbus College of Art & Design (CCAD) is seeking a full time Lab Manager - Woodshop & Three-Dimensional Studies with experience in woodworking, mold making, facility management, and an interest in art/design education. This position will support faculty from multiple majors who teach courses that utilize the woodshop and/or mold making lab. Additionally, this position will support students from all majors who need to utilize the fabrication facilities. Duties will include training others in standard shop safety protocol and practices. The successful candidate will demonstrate a thorough knowledge of professional and safety practices in fabrication and shop operation as well as proficiency in creating molds for casting, woodworking, and finishing. In addition, those who demonstrate the ability to work in multidisciplinary approaches and practices (metals, ceramics, glass, fibers) will be given additional consideration. Candidates with shop safety or OSHA certification will be given priority.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:


 

  • Maintain and administer safety protocols for students and faculty using the facilities.
  • Maintain a clean and safe environment for students and faculty.
  • Maintain facilities and equipment in the woodshop and mold making lab.
  • Facilitate the purchasing of shop supplies and consumables. Work with the Lab & Studio Manager on budgets and equipment purchasing.
  • Supervise the cleaning and organization of each lab's facilities and equipment.
  • Hire, train, and supervise the performance of student employees to monitor labs and maintain facilities.
  • Schedule and maintain timecard records of hours worked by student employees.
  • Propose and execute projects for facilities upgrades.
  • Maintain a working knowledge of equipment used in the woodshop and mold making lab.
  • Provide technical assistance and fabrication guidance to students as needed.
  • Assist in coordinating with outside vendors on projects that exceed the scope of CCAD's facilities & equipment.


 

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES

Recruit, hire, supervise, approve timesheets, and oversee student lab monitors in the

fabrication area. This position may also supervise part-time lab technician(s) assigned in

their area.

QUALIFICATIONS: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform

each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the

  • Ability to work with a variety of materials such as wood, plastic, foam, plaster, and silicone.
  • Ability to effectively communicate across all levels of a multidimensional organization.
  • Willingness to model and instruct proper safety procedures across multiple shops and labs with a diverse audience.
  • Proficiency with essential computer software used for email communication, document creation and sharing, and employee timecard management (e.g. Gmail, Google Sheets, Google Drive)

LANGUAGE SKILLS

  • Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Ability to complete checklists, work orders, etc.
  • Ability to verbally convey ideas, problems, and technical information to others.

MATHEMATICAL SKILLS

  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent.

REASONING ABILITY

  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving several concrete variables in standardized situations.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Current driver's license.

EDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE

  • Bachelor's or Associate degree in related field preferred; or an equivalent to a minimum of 3 years of professional shop management experience.
  • Experience in the safe operation and maintenance of standard shop equipment (table saw, planer, jointer, lathe, and other various hand and power tools).
  • Experience fastening, gluing, painting, and finishing a variety of materials.
  • Experience with making molds from multiple types of materials and at various scales.

  • Assume responsibility for the health, safety, and welfare of students, employees and visitors;
  • Develop clearly understood procedures and provide regular drills for emergencies and disasters;
  • Maintain a master schedule to be posted for all teachers;
  • Establish schedules and procedures for the supervision of students in non-classroom areas (including before and after school);
  • Maintain visibility with students, teachers, parents and the Board;

Requirements

  • Principal license preferred;
  • Bachelor's Degree in Education or other related discipline;

  • Effective organizational skills with the ability to perform multiple tasks;

INSTRUCTIONAL ASSISTANT (GENERAL)DUTIES/RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • An Instructional Assistant (General Fund) assists the building administrator and teachers in supervising of students and general building duties.
  • Assists school personnel by answering phones, distributing materials and sorting mail.
  • Duplicates, collates and staples materials.
  • Assist with teaching activates in the classroom.
  • Assists teachers in the preparation of instructional and audio-visual materials.
  • Establishes rapport with the parents/guardians and community members through phone calls, home visits and school conferences.
  • Assists in the supervision of student behavior in hallways, lunchrooms and on the playground.
  • Assists with supervising students on field trips.
  • Assists with bus loading and unloading.
  • Attends required professional development sessions.
  • Assists in the reinforcement of discipline procedures.
  • Conducts individual and small group activities.
  • Alerts the classroom teach to any needs or relevant information which best fits the individual student.
  • Assists children in developing skills of independence (including diapering and toilet training) in all areas of self-help.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS and ABILITIES:
  • Must possess a strong desire and willingness to assist teachers and administrators in serving a diverse student
    population.
  • Must have the ability to develop and maintain effective working relationships with students, parents, co-workers
    and supervisors.
  • Under final consideration for employment and in accordance with Ohio Law, fingerprints and passing a criminal
    records check if required. By completing an application, an individual agrees to comply fully with Ohio RevisedCode 109.57 and , both pre and post-employment.
  • If hired must obtain an Educational Aide Permit from the Ohio Department of Education.

PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS AND WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Must have an Associate's degree (or higher) from an accredited institution of higher learning
  • Have at least 48 semester hours or 72 quarter hours from an accredited institution of higher learning.
  • Pass the Ohio Department of Education approved Parapro examination administered by the Educational Testing Service (ETS) or by the Ohio State University (OSU), and possess a high school diploma or GED recognized by the Ohio Department of Education.
