**Job Summary:**
Join the Electric Power Division at Caterpillar as an Automation Engineer and play a key role in shaping the future of generator control switchgear systems! In this dynamic role, you'll design, develop, and implement cutting-edge software solutions that power critical electric systems. You'll work with a mix of established guidelines and innovative thinking to bring projects to life-often independently, but with the support of a collaborative team when needed. **What You Will Do:**
+ Identify retrofit opportunities, scope projects, and support proposal creation via Dealer and Factory teams
+ Perform technical risk management for field performance of assigned projects.
+ Convert legacy PLC projects to new platforms and validate for accuracy.
+ Execute and support design, test, manufacture and commissioning of low and medium voltage switchgear controls retrofits for systems that control multiple generators which parallel to one or more utility sources.
+ Provide direction to CAD designers to create wiring and assembly drawings for generator paralleling controls.
+ Utilize templates or modify PLC programs for control of generator paralleling switchgear.
+ Modify template HMI programs to coincide with project-specific PLC programs.
+ Provide Engineering/Technical support to AES (Advanced Electrical Services) Sales Group.
+ Submit daily project reports and expenses in a timely manner.
+ Assist the Product Support Center help desk to resolve customer issues that cannot be handled locally.
+ As needed, assist or train technicians, and both internal and external customers, in preventative maintenance, troubleshooting, repair, and testing of equipment under contract with Caterpillar Switchgear.
**What You Will Have:**
+ Experience in dealing with multiple disciplines such as contractors, consultants, engineers, end users, etc.
+ Working knowledge of the following:
+ Installation, troubleshooting, and design of switchgear, ATS, and generator systems.
+ Reading schematics and blueprints for power control and automation at a Power Systems level
+ Installation, troubleshooting, design and programming of automated control systems using Programmable Logic Controllers (PLC's), Human Machine Interfaces (HMI's), PC controls, and distributed processing.

Responsibilities

    • Execute plans of electrical wiring for well-functioning lighting, intercom and other electrical systems
    • Install electrical apparatus, fixtures and equipment for alarm and other systems.
    • Install safety and distribution components (e.g. switches, resistors, circuit-breaker panels etc.).

Responsibilities
  • Provide overall program oversight for wildfire mitigation and distribution infrastructure projects.
  • Lead coordination and performance monitoring across multiple project teams.
  • Implement program governance structures, reporting tools, and KPI dashboards.
  • Manage program budgets, resource planning, and portfolio risk mitigation strategies.
  • Collaborate with client leadership to align program priorities and resolve escalated issues.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
  • PMP or Project Management certification highly preferred.
  • Expertise in program controls, cost/schedule management, and regulatory compliance.
  • Exceptional leadership and interpersonal skills, with the ability to effectively lead project teams and engage stakeholders at all levels.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
  • Familiarity with Primavera P6, Power BI, MS Project, SAP, and portfolio reporting tools.

$124,000 - $187,000 per year

In this role, you'll join a fast-growing utility engineering team supporting utility clients throughout Texas. This is your opportunity to take ownership of designs, collaborate with experienced professionals, and make a visible impact on the infrastructure powering local communities.
**What You'll Do:**
+ **Design Residential & Commercial Electric Distribution Systems:** Create overhead and underground layouts for subdivisions, apartment complexes, and commercial developments.
+ **Help Support Project Delivery:** Assist in guiding projects from initial scoping through final design-ensuring technical accuracy, cost-efficiency, and constructability.
+ **Collaborate Cross-Functionally:** Work with CAD Technicians, Drafters, and Project Managers to produce accurate design packages that are ready for construction.
+ **Help Support Client Coordination:** Work closely with utility clients and developers to respond to field conditions, design changes, and permitting needs as part of an integrated project team.
**Qualifications:**
**Required:**
+ 3+ years of hands-on experience in electric distribution system design (underground and/or overhead)
+ Experience designing for subdivisions, apartment complexes, or large-scale residential developments
+ Strong working knowledge of utility standards, including NESC and/or RUS
+ Proficiency in AutoCAD, MicroStation, or related design tools
+ Ability to interpret and apply construction drawings, maps, and GIS data
**Preferred:**
+ Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Engineering Technology, or equivalent field experience
+ Understanding of constructability and field application of distribution designs
+ Knowledge of utility standards and permitting documentation requirements
