Maritime Electrical Power Systems Engineer

Overview:

The GBS Group, an engineering services and consulting firm, is seeking a Maritime Electrical Power Systems Engineer to join our Virginia Beach headquarters office. The GBS Group designs and delivers high technology services and solutions to most advanced naval and maritime ships, as well as to special purpose platforms and assets. Our office is located within 10 miles of the Virginia Beach resort area and the downtown Norfolk Waterfront shopping district.

Responsibilities will include (but are not limited to):

  • Support shipboard electrical power and machinery control systems and equipment.
  • Provide design support for integration of equipment in an industrial/shipboard environment.
  • Develop programming and equipment standards for shipboard electrical power generation, control and distribution systems.
  • Prepare technical documentation such as reports, procedures and test plans in support of all aspects of shipboard electrical power generation, control and distribution systems.
  • Assist in troubleshooting, diagnosing and repairing shipboard electrical power generation, control and distribution systems and equipment.
  • Participate in requirements development and design reviews to document system issues and revise design specifications and other detailed documentation for new systems and modernization efforts.
  • Contribute to proposal development by providing generation of Work Breakdown Structures (WBS's), Bill of Materials, and labor estimates for shipboard electrical power generation, control and distribution system upgrades.
  • Communicate effectively with team members in software engineering, hardware engineering and program management.
Qualifications:

Candidates for this position must possess the following professional experience and qualifications:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited college or university
  • 7+ years of experience working with shipboard electrical power generation systems
  • Proficient knowledge of the fundamental concepts, practices, and procedures associated with US Navy and commercial shipboard electrical power generation, control and distribution systems.
  • Ability to generate and maintain complex electrical drawing schematics for shipboard drive systems and switchboards
  • Ability to troubleshoot software and hardware issues related to shipboard electrical power generation, control and distribution systems and equipment.
  • Ability to execute PLC driven systems for machinery controls
  • Ability to travel
  • Ability to obtain and maintain a secret clearance (US Citizenship Required)

RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Layout and design of photovoltaic solar arrays.
  • Perform sizing and power analysis, charging analysis, grounding and ESD for deployable solar arrays.
  • Execute the non-recurring engineering in support of new solar cell device definition and existing technology optimization to meet interface and performance requirements.
  • Design, and model electrical schematics, power harnessing and circuit boards.

Role Overview: Join our dynamic team to collaborate on reviewing customer applications using electric technologies for Low and Medium Voltage power systems in Halliburton’s Production Enhancement Product Service Line (PSL). You will support the development, delivery and commissioning of advanced technology solutions for oil & gas applications, aiming to improve operational efficiency, reduce costs and emissions, and maximize well productivity.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Foster collaboration in developing technical solutions for electrical low and medium voltage power systems

  • Work with design, maintenance, and operation teams to ensure safe, reliable deployment of high-performance solutions

  • Engage with engineers, contractors, and suppliers to ensure component and subsystem performance, reliability, and quality

  • Analyze, design, and optimize electrical power systems for reliable and efficient power delivery. Including generation, distribution, and utilization of electricity

  • Create specifications, procedures, installation instructions, and test documents

  • Utilize various systems and software tools, including internal Product Data Management systems, SAP, and Microsoft Office

  • Participate in hands-on lab, full-scale, or field testing of relevant equipment and systems

  • Travel to well sites, customer offices, vendor offices, and other locations as required (10-15% of the time, including weekends and holidays)

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering with at least 5 years of power systems engineering experience; a Master’s degree is preferred

  • Experience with customer applications of mobile electrical gear

  • Experience solving complex issues and designing technical solutions related to power systems

  • Proficiency in electrical analysis software (e.g., SKM, ETAP)

  • Hands-on experience with electrical equipment and systems, including micro-grids, utility interfaces, NG generators, turbines, medium voltage switchgear, transformers, motor control centers, AC motors, and protection systems

  • Preferred experience in medium voltage power generation/distribution for oil & gas applications

  • Familiarity with large-scale industrial processes (chemical, pharmaceutical, oil & gas refining)

  • Understanding of commissioning power system solutions and troubleshooting skills

Skills:

  • Ability to read and interpret electrical and mechanical drawings, schematics, P&IDs, flow charts, and cause and effect diagrams

  • Proficiency in system analysis (load flow, short circuit, stability studies, fault, and harmonic analysis)

  • Excellent communication and critical thinking skills

Travel:

  • Required travel to various locations, including well sites and customer/vendor offices (10-15% of the time)

General Summary

Under the direct supervision of the Director of Electrical Engineering or senior staff, the Electrical Engineer - Power Systems will specialize in performing and documenting power system studies, including short circuit analysis, protective device coordination, and arc flash hazard studies. The engineer will provide detailed engineering analysis for industrial, commercial, educational, governmental, and healthcare facilities, ensuring compliance with industry standards and regulations. This role requires proficiency in power system modeling software, field data collection, and collaboration with project teams to deliver high-quality, reliable electrical engineering solutions.

Essential Job Functions:

  • Perform short circuit analysis to evaluate fault currents and ensure proper short-circuit current ratings of electrical equipment.

  • Conduct overcurrent protection device coordination studies to determine overcurrent protective device settings for selective tripping and ensure system reliability.

  • Evaluate systems for selective coordination where required per NFPA 70 and recommend solutions to comply with NFPA 70.

  • Perform comprehensive arc flash hazard analysis per IEEE 1584 and NFPA 70E to determine the arc flash boundaries, incident energy, and appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) requirements.

  • Evaluate and recommend arc flash mitigation strategies to reduce incident energy levels.

  • Create arc flash labels in accordance with NFPA 70E and client standards.

  • Conduct site visits to apply arc flash labels.

  • Ensure proper application of arc flash labels when installed by the contractor.

  • Conduct motor-starting studies to assess the impact of starting large motors on electrical power systems.

  • Utilize power system software tools such as SKM, ETAP, or EasyPower for power systems modeling and analysis.

  • Maintain organized project file containing project calculations, schedules, correspondence, appropriate reference materials, etc.

  • Conduct site visits to gather field data and verify existing conditions to support accurate study results.

  • Collaborate with project teams, including the Project Manager, Electrical Engineer, and client, to define project scope, budget, and design approach.

  • Adhere to project quality, budget, and schedule.

  • Mentor junior engineers and contribute to team technical development

  • Edit and draft project specifications.

  • Perform related duties as assigned.

Employment Qualifications:

Education:

  • Bachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering from an accredited university

  • Professional Engineer's License is required

Experience:

  • 10+ years related and progressively more responsible experience in electrical engineering field.

  • 5+ years experience performing short-circuit analysis, protective device coordination and arc flash hazard analysis studies.

ELECTRICAL ENGINEER (POWER SYSTEMS)

As a member of the Construction Projects Team, you will work with engineers across multiple disciplines to design, build, and activate infrastructure that will enable SpaceX to achieve its long-term mission. This team is responsible for the delivery of large capital projects to various internal customer groups across the company. This position is based out of the McGregor Rocket Development Facility. Travel will accompany this role, and based on business needs, opportunities to work at other SpaceX facilities may occur in the future.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate and grow with the multi-discipline SpaceX Construction Projects Team by performing (power-specific) engineering, procurement, construction, and commissioning activities for a variety of critical and fast-paced company projects.

  • Develop and issue drawings, design documentation, and reports for aerospace, industrial, and commercial type projects

  • Write, negotiate, and manage construction contracts with subcontractors across multiple disciplines through contract close-out

  • Resolve design and construction conflicts in the field in real-time

  • Coordinate with electrical utility provider for design/engineering to ensure reliable power service to critical site infrastructure

  • Interact with engineers, contractors, fabricators, and project stakeholders

BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelor's degree in electrical engineering or electrical engineering technology

  • 3+ years of professional experience with the design or build of commercial or industrial power systems

PREFERRED SKILLS AND EXPERIENCE:

  • Primary experience with electrical and power distribution systems (<600Vac)

  • Working knowledge of delta/wye transformers, switchgear, motor control centers, building lighting, building construction specifications, and facility grounding

  • Experience with critical power infrastructure including UPS systems, backup generators, and automatic transfer switches

  • Experience creating and implementing process/design solutions with minimal impact on business operations

  • Ability to quickly assess an issue and assist technicians with troubleshooting and repair

  • Ability to work in a high-concentration, high-stress environment, under possible extended work hours and tight deadlines

  • Acute attention to detail, ability to see interactions with other systems to avoid problems

  • AutoCAD/Revit – beginner to intermediate skill level
