Position Summary:
We are seeking a Industrial Electrician/Assistant Facility Supervisor to support the ongoing operations of our maritime and bulk terminal facilities. This role is responsible for the installation, maintenance, and repair of all electrical systems and equipment supporting our port infrastructure, material handling systems, and industrial machinery.
The ideal candidate is a self-starter with strong problem-solving skills, who thrives in a dynamic, industrial environment and comfortable taking a progressive leadership role as they become familiar with the Avondale facility and equipment. This position plays a vital role in ensuring our equipment operates safely, efficiently, and in compliance with regulatory standards.
Essential Responsibilities and Duties:
Electrical Maintenance & Repair
•Perform routine and emergency maintenance on a wide range of industrial electrical equipment, including motors, control panels, transformers, contactors, switches and sensors, lighting systems.
•Diagnose and troubleshoot faults in low-voltage and medium-voltage electrical systems.
•Test and replace wiring, lighting, electrical fixtures, circuit breakers, transformers, and other electrical components.
•Assist in the design and layout of electrical systems for any new company projects or existing equipment electrical upgrades/modifications.
•Perform basic load calculations such as amperage requirement, voltage drop, and other standard electrical calculations.
•Support procurement efforts by researching components and locating suppliers.
•Assist M&R management with the recertification of all overhead and gantry cranes ensuring all equipment certifications remain current.
•Perform any additional tasks given by the M&R Project Engineer.
Equipment Support
•Maintain, repair, and support gantry cranes, overhead cranes, commercial HVAC, plumbing, and drainage equipment.
•Perform wiring, installation, and startup of new or upgraded equipment.
•Provide electrical support for hydraulic and pneumatic systems as part of integrated machinery maintenance.
•Assist with troubleshooting and repair of commercial HVAC systems, facility drainage systems, and facility plumbing systems.
Preventive & Predictive Maintenance
•Execute and document preventive maintenance tasks in accordance with maintenance schedules and operational priorities.
•Monitor equipment condition using diagnostic tools (e.g., thermal imaging, insulation resistance testing, voltage readings).
Controls & Automation (PLC & VFD)
•Troubleshoot and support systems utilizing PLC-controlled processes (Allen-Bradley or similar).
•Assist with programming adjustments, 1/0 diagnostics, and interface configurations as needed.
•Perform basic maintenance and troubleshooting of VFDs (Variable Frequency Drives) used in motor control applications.
Safety & Compliance
•Maintain compliance with OSHA regulations, NEC codes, and company safety policies.
•Participate in safety meetings, inspections, and job hazard analyses (JHAs).
•Maintain lockout/tagout (LOTO) procedures and safe work practices in all electrical tasks.
Documentation & Communication
•Accurately record maintenance activities, findings, and parts used in the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
•Communicate with team members, operations staff, and leadership to minimize downtime and coordinate repairs.
Qualifications:
•High school diploma or GED required.
•Completion of an electrical apprenticeship or equivalent vocational training strongly preferred.
•Minimum of 3-5 years of hands-on experience as an industrial or commercial electrician, preferably in ports, manufacturing, or heavy industrial environments.
•Solid understanding of AC/DC systems, motors, transformers, relays, and control circuits.
•Familiarity with PLC systems and VFDs in real-world applications is required (advanced programming not necessary).
•Ability to read and interpret electrical schematics, wiring diagrams, P&IDs, and technical manuals.
•Strong written and verbal communication skills
•Comfortable working outdoors and around large, moving equipment.
•Must be able to lift 75 lbs, climb ladders, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
Preferred Skills & Certifications:

Essential Functions
1 Assists and supports Electricians in the installation, testing, and troubleshooting of electrical equipment, lighting, and power circuits for the City and its departments and facilities.
2 Troubleshoots simple electrical and electronic apparatus, motors, controls, and equipment by using schematics to ensure electrical power compatibility and safety of components.
3 Installs, repairs, and maintains various electrical equipment such as control circuits, lighting circuits, motors, switch gear for new, temporary and existing construction and ensures equipment conforms to electrical and safety codes.
