Job Overview:

The EMG Technician is responsible for assisting the EMG physician with performing basic nerve conduction studies.

Qualifications:

Required:

  • Associate's degree or higher required.
  • Completion of an accredited EMG training program required.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) through the American Heart Association (AHA) required.
  • Electrodiagnostic Technologist registration and certification required.
  • Minimum five (5) years of experience in the EMG field required

Preferred:

  • Prior EEG Technician experience strongly preferred.
  • Experience within a hospital setting

Essential Functions:

  • Assist with all aspects of scheduling EMG patients.
  • Complete and submit billing information on a daily basis for all studies performed.
  • Maintain department medical records in a professional and confidential manner.
  • Maintain EMG equipment and work area. Ensure cleanliness of equipment and test areas after each use.
  • Perform EMG studies proficiently.
  • Performs and assists with EMG testing in collaboration with Neurologist.
  • Troubleshoot equipment problems and facilitate maintenance and service calls.

Performance of EMG procedures
1)Performs motor and sensory nerve conduction studies and somatosensory evoked potentials

2)Identifying and eliminating/reducing artifact by positioning the patient to ensure adequate accessibility and patient comfort and creating an environment which is optimal for patient relaxation.

3)Prepare the patient and equipment for the needle examination, if applicable disinfects recording electrodes and stimulator probe according to facility policy and procedures.

4)Verify correct nerve stimulation by observing appropriate muscle contraction.

5)Documenting the following for physician review: waveform latencies in milliseconds, waveform amplitudes in microvolts or millivolts, as applicable for study, conduction velocities in meters/seconds, if applicable (limb temperature, any unusual characteristics of the waveforms).

Job Summary:

JOB SUMMARY:

Prepares patients for and conducts routine Neurodiagnostic procedures, such as neonatal exams, at the bedside, and in critical care units, on all ages of patients served by the department with occasional guidance. Collects data pertinent to the interpretation of test results and assists other senior technologists or medical staff with complex recordings.

POSITION SCHEDULE:

M – F | 8AM – 5PM | PRN minimum shift requirement one (1) shift per week

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Performs all Neurodiagnostic procedures as assigned in at least one modality in accordance with the established department and hospital policies and procedures.

• Demonstrates competency in performing procedures on all ages under general supervision.

• Assists to identify patient and family learning needs and provides pertinent information regarding the procedure that is appropriate for age and level of learning to the patient and/or family.

• The responsibilities listed are a general overview of the position and additional duties may be assigned.

  • Registered EEG Technologist certification (PREFERRED) *

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES:

• Diagnostic Testing (Fundamental Awareness): Demonstrates proficiency of diagnostic testing in practical applications. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering results.

• Equipment Maintenance (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate the ability to maintain equipment, products, or systems in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Assures that parts inventory is sufficient.

• Medical Terminology & Documentation (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate medical terminology and documentation in practical applications of moderate difficulty.

• Patient Evaluation (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience, training, direct exposure, or past experience conducting a simple patient evaluations. Capable of identifying the health risks and patient needs.

Neurodiagnostic Technician

Full -Time 32 Hrs.

Patient Testing Responsibilities

The neurodiagnostic technician conducts various patient tests, including but not limited to:

  • Electromyography (EMG)

  • Electroencephalography (EEG)

  • Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

Summary of Responsibilities

  • Ensures timely completion of daily patient testing

  • Accurately documents pre-patient testing

  • Maintains clinical testing equipment

  • Performs all assigned duties in strict compliance with established policies, procedures, and protocols

  • Works to ensure patient safety, comfort, and privacy

Education Requirements

  • Associate's degree from an accredited school

  • Basic knowledge of anatomy, including muscles, nerves, vestibular system, and visual system

  • Average mathematical skills

  • Basic understanding of electronics and instrumentation

Experience Requirements

  • Minimum of two years of recent experience in electronic diagnostics

  • Recent experience in EMG

  • Certified EMG desired and preferred

  • EEG experience preferred, but not required

Knowledge & Skills

  • Broad range of administrative and technical skills

  • Detailed knowledge of neurodiagnostic equipment

  • Ability to execute multi-step diagnostic procedures

  • Produces final output within established departmental standards
