**Job Summary and Responsibilities**
This position is responsible for providing Neurological Diagnostics procedures in all patient care areas including NCS/EMG. Assess diagnostics needs of patients and works under medical supervision operating sophisticated medical equipment.

Job Summary

Position is responsible for performing electroencephalograph (EEG) and other neurodiagnostic examinations according to physician’s orders under the supervision of the department manager. Job Description

Minimum Qualifications

Education:   Associates degree, preferred.

Licenses/Certifications:   Basic Life Support certification.

Experience / Knowledge / Skills:

• Minimum three (3) years directly related experience and an Associates degree from an accredited Neurodiagnostic program; or  five ( 5) years' experience if no Associates degree.

• Eligible to take the National Registry exam.

Principal Accountabilities

• Receives and records physician’s orders for patient testing: schedules patients, obtains patient medical history and completes appropriate documentation. 

• Prepares patients for procedures explains procedure, measures for accurate electrode sites, applies electrodes and adjusts as appropriate.

• Performs advanced neurodiagnostic exams depending on modality maintains equipment and makes minor adjustments as indicated.  

• May be responsible for scheduling other techs, assisting the department manager as needed, and performing entry-level supervisory duties.

• Ensures safe care to patients, staff and visitors; adheres to all Memorial Hermann policies, procedures, and standards within budgetary specifications including time management, supply management, productivity and quality of service.

Major Responsibilities:
Performance of EMG procedures
1)Performs motor and sensory nerve conduction studies and somatosensory evoked potentials

2)Identifying and eliminating/reducing artifact by positioning the patient to ensure adequate accessibility and patient comfort and creating an environment which is optimal for patient relaxation.

3)Prepare the patient and equipment for the needle examination, if applicable disinfects recording electrodes and stimulator probe according to facility policy and procedures.

4)Verify correct nerve stimulation by observing appropriate muscle contraction.

5)Documenting the following for physician review: waveform latencies in milliseconds, waveform amplitudes in microvolts or millivolts, as applicable for study, conduction velocities in meters/seconds, if applicable (limb temperature, any unusual characteristics of the waveforms).

6)Performs routine NCS/EMG procedures accordingly to facility policy and procedures.

7)Successfully completes all pertinent electrodiagnostic competencies.

Daily Operations
1)Responsible for maintaining a productive schedule, with an average of 6.5 out of 8 hours per day scheduled for direct clinical care.

2)Performs other duties such as billing for all services rendered on the day delivered, distributing mail, maintaining a clean work environment, ordering supplies, filing, and serving on departmental committees.

3)Participates in the continuous improvement of the quality of services delivered through the department by participating in measuring critical functions, and participating in teams to improve work processes.

4)Promotes patient safety by reporting of issues through established channels and participating as requested in safety initiatives.

Patient / Room Preparation
1)Ensures that the examination room is properly prepared for the patient.

2)Prepares a data sheet that includes patient demographics (name, date of birth, age, ID number, referring physician, reason for referral); procedure date, procedure number, technologist name, interpreting physician's name, detailed history pertinent to the referring physician's reason for request, medications (anticoagulants, etc); results and/or copies of other relevant studies.

3)Explains the procedure to the patient and/or family, addressing any patient concerns regarding the test.

4)Prepares the patient by assisting in removal of clothing, braces, etc, or patient transfers to the examination table.

5)Assists the electromyographer in preparing for the procedure by properly positioning the patient, applying surface electrodes as directed, and labeling and organizing electromyographic printouts.

6)Consistently maintains rooms assuring an adequate level of supplies are available.

Equipment Maintenance
1)Calibrates equipment according to departmental policy to insure proper working order.

2)Assists in maintenance of equipment in safe working order.

3)Completes all competency assessments related to equipment use and calibration.

4)Promptly notifies physicians or supervisor of suspected problems with equipment.

5)Maintains floor stock medications, if applicable.

Documentation
1)Records basic patient information in the medical record.

Physical Requirements and Working Conditions:
Lifts 50 to 100 pounds occasionally and/or 25 to 50 pounds frequently and/or 10 to 20 pounds constantly.

**Responsibilities**
The CNP Technologist I functions in the neurodiagnostic laboratories performing electroencephalography (EEG), Evoked Potentials, Autonomic, and/or Nerve Conduction Studies. The technologists are responsible for complete and accurate patient preparation, data acquisition, providing a safe testing environment, and must demonstrate minimum competency, skill, and knowledge in neurodiagnostic procedural testing in the area of hire.

Prepares patients for and conducts routine Neurodiagnostic procedures, such as neonatal exams, at the bedside, and in critical care units, on all ages of patients served by the department with occasional guidance. **Job Summary:**
JOB SUMMARY:
Prepares patients for and conducts routine Neurodiagnostic procedures, such as neonatal exams, at the bedside, and in critical care units, on all ages of patients served by the department with occasional guidance. Collects data pertinent to the interpretation of test results and assists other senior technologists or medical staff with complex recordings.

M - F | 8AM - 5PM | PRN minimum shift requirement one (1) shift per week

KEY RESPONSIBILITIES:
- Performs all Neurodiagnostic procedures as assigned in at least one modality in accordance with the established department and hospital policies and procedures.
- Demonstrates competency in performing procedures on all ages under general supervision.
- Assists to identify patient and family learning needs and provides pertinent information regarding the procedure that is appropriate for age and level of learning to the patient and/or family.

TECHNICAL CAPABILITIES:
- Diagnostic Testing (Fundamental Awareness): Demonstrates proficiency of diagnostic testing in practical applications. Possesses sufficient knowledge, training, and experience to be capable of successfully delivering results.
- Equipment Maintenance (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate the ability to maintain equipment, products, or systems in practical applications of moderate difficulty. Assures that parts inventory is sufficient.
- Medical Terminology & Documentation (Novice): Possesses sufficient fundamental proficiency to successfully demonstrate medical terminology and documentation in practical applications of moderate difficulty.
- Patient Evaluation (Fundamental Awareness): Has limited experience, training, direct exposure, or past experience conducting a simple patient evaluations. Capable of identifying the health risks and patient needs.

Neurodiagnostic Technician

Patient Testing Responsibilities

The neurodiagnostic technician conducts various patient tests, including but not limited to:

• Electromyography (EMG)

• Electroencephalography (EEG)

• Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS)

Summary of Responsibilities

• Ensures timely completion of daily patient testing

• Accurately documents pre-patient testing

• Maintains clinical testing equipment

• Performs all assigned duties in strict compliance with established policies, procedures, and protocols

• Works to ensure patient safety, comfort, and privacy

Education Requirements

• Associate's degree from an accredited school

• Basic knowledge of anatomy, including muscles, nerves, vestibular system, and visual system

• Average mathematical skills

• Basic understanding of electronics and instrumentation

Experience Requirements

• Minimum of two years of recent experience in electronic diagnostics

• Recent experience in EMG

• Certified EMG desired and preferred

• EEG experience preferred, but not required

Knowledge & Skills

• Broad range of administrative and technical skills

• Detailed knowledge of neurodiagnostic equipment

• Ability to execute multi-step diagnostic procedures
