Job purpose
EMG Technician will assist the Physician in assessing, planning, implementing and evaluating patient care by operating diagnostic equipment in order to diagnose diseases, injuries and abnormalities. Must demonstrate the knowledge and skills necessary to perform or learn diagnostic electromyography testing procedures.
Duties and responsibilities
• Performs nerve conduction studies on patients following the guidelines and procedures of The American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists under the supervision of a Physician.
• Performs nerve conduction studies on both common and uncommon nerves to aid the Physician in the best studies to reveal abnormalities.
• Recognizes and troubleshoots physiologic and non-physiological artifact and technical issues, while recognizing normal and abnormal results to take the reasonable steps to obtain the best study on the patient.
• Performs Nerve conduction studies independently in routine settings under direct supervision of the Physician
• Cleans, replenishes, maintains and assures availability of instruments and supplies needed in the EMG Lab.
• Assists Physician as needed during the needle examination and sets up for his procedure.
• Keeps equipment clean and in operating condition, detects instrument malfunctions and makes minor maintenance adjustments or reports the needed for major repairs.
• Perform other related duties as assigned
Requirements
Qualifications
Education & Certifications:
• Associates degree in health sciences or equivalent combination of education and experience.
• Certified by the American Association of Electrodiagnostic Technologists (AAET) required.
• Registered Nerve Conduction Study Technologist (R.NCS.T.) preferred
• BLS Certification required
Experience:
• Minimum of one year experience with the methods, equipment and materials used in electromyography
• Prior hands on patient care
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:
• Clear and precise communication
• Ability to pay close attention to detail
• Effectively manages day by organizing and prioritizing
• Possesses excellent phone and customer service skills and abilities
• Protects patient information and maintains confidentiality

• Must be able to lift and move boxes and other items weighing up to 30 pounds.
• Requires eye-hand coordination and manual dexterity sufficient to operate office equipment, etc.

Performs standard and specialized Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS).
Responsibilities
* Secures patient history and review medical record for pertinent information. Learns how to explain test procedure to patients and how to provide for patient support and comfort.
* Performs Nerve Conduction Studies. Attaches electrodes and stimulator in standard position. Continually evaluates the quality and accuracy of recordings and documentation activities.
* Performs specialized Nerve Conduction Study procedures, adapting procedures to particular clinical circumstances.
* Utilizes computer-averaging equipment to measure motor nerve conduction, sensory nerve conduction, F wave response, and H reflex response.
* Assists with Autonomic Nervous System testing.
* Reviews recordings obtained and prepares preliminary interpretation for physician approval.
* Follows calibration procedures for standard and special recordings. Learns how to Inspect and ensure proper maintenance of Nerve Conduction/EMG and computer averaging machinery.
* Observes the teaching of assigned residents, medical students, and other technical staff in Nerve Conduction and EMG procedures with faculty Neurologists.
* Performs other duties as required or assigned.
Qualifications
* Associate's degree in a health related field preferred.
* Strong knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology preferred.
* Prior computer experience preferred.
* Excellent communication skills with the ability to work as a member of a team essential.
* No previous nerve conduction experience required.
* Preferred pre-requisites: college level courses in anatomy and physiology, basic electronics, and medical terminology.
Required Licensure/Certifications
- Currently Registered with the New Hampshire Board of Registration for Medical Technicians
- BLS required within 30 days of hire date.
- End of year one in role, have an outlined plan for taking the Nerve Conduction certification Exam (CNIM).

Electromyography Technician 2
The University of Miami/UHealth Department of Neurology has an exciting opportunity for a Full Time Electromyography Technician 2 to work at Soffer Clinical Research Center. The EMG technician 2 will support the EMG clinical operations of the Neuromuscular Division. The candidate will work collaboratively with multiple neurologists’ styles, workflows, and preferences. The technician will work closely with the neurologist to perform nerve conduction studies (NCS) and electromyography (EMG) tests. The ideal candidate will have strong interpersonal skills, a strong knowledge of anatomy and medical terminology, and an interest in being an integral member of a team.

Reviews the daily schedule and plans appropriate NCS to answer consultation inquiries.

Performs room turnover before and after each patient visit.

Assigns patients to a room, delivers gown, and ensures appropriate limb temperature.

Performs NCS and related studies as requested by the attending physician.

Reviews findings with physician and responds to feedback from physician.

Maintains equipment, ensures room cleanliness.

Turns machines on at the beginning of the day and off at the end of the day.

Perform under direct supervision and according to established guidelines and procedures, routine and complex procedures to obtain data for use in the clinical diagnosis of disorders of the nervous system in at least one of the following modalities of Neurodiagnostics: Electroencephalogarphy (EEG), Evoked Potentials (EP), Epilepsy Monitoring and Polysomnograhy (PSG), or Nerve Conduction Studies (NCS). Perform duties in various diagnostic and research areas as assigned.
This role will support the Procirca Neurodiagnostic team in Erie, PA at UPMC Hamot and North Shore Neurology (outpatient). Monday - Friday daylight shifts, no weekends.
Trainings will take place 1-2 times per month (for approximately 2-4 days) in Pittsburgh, while training and getting acclimated to the role.

Responsibilities:

Operate computer equipment to record nervous system responses that provide quantitative and objective measures of the neuronal/sensory function.

Collaborate with supervisor and medical personnel to resolve problems and to advise concerning laboratory procedures, techniques and equipment.

Clean, adjust and perform routine maintenance and repair on neurodiagnostic equipment to ensure proper functioning. Troubleshoot routine equipment problems.

Document pertinent medical history from the patient or family members.

React in medical emergencies to ensure patient safety; know unit and hospital procedures for working with high acuity patients.

Recognize changes in the clinical condition of the patient and correlate those changes with the EEG. Discriminate the changes requiring intervention such as seizures or cardiac arrhythmia.

Schedule patients for neurodiagnostic procedures and obtain required medical information; explain procedures, alleviate fears, and elicit cooperation. Prepare patient for tests to include measuring and marking cranial area and fastening electrodes to specified positions on scalp and body.

Perform procedures with appropriate documentation.

Identify EEG waveforms/patterns during testing and communicate to medical personnel.

HS diploma and 6 months of patient care OR
-
an Assoc or Bachelor degree.Licensure, Certifications, and Clearances:CPR required based on AHA standards that include both a didactic and skills demonstration component within 30 days of hire
