Job Description

Argonne National Laboratory is seeking to hire a Department Director for the Energy Resources and Demand department of the Energy Systems and Infrastructure Assessments (ESIA) division. ESIA is a part of the Advanced Energy Technologies directorate of Argonne National Laboratory.
In this position the candidate will perform technical, economic, and environmental analyses of energy and power systems, develop and apply methodologies and tools for techno-economic analyses of energy technologies and systems, including electricity generating technologies, energy storage, building technologies, demand response, distributed energy resources, industrial technologies, and other energy technologies and conversion processes. Tools include computer modeling and simulations, energy analysis algorithms, economic and financial models, and building and industrial technology modeling. Analyses include analyses of energy resources and demand modeling and simulation, engineering economics and finance, life cycle analysis, optimization and equilibrium analysis, impact analysis, and technology assessment. Personnel have education and/or experience in engineering, economics, or related fields. This description documents the general nature of work but is not intended to be a comprehensive list of all activities, duties and responsibilities required of job incumbent. Consequently, a job incumbent may be required to perform other duties as assigned.
The successful candidate will provide technical direction, leadership, coordination, and support for research of energy and environmental systems, including the analysis of energy resources and demand, and for the development of research programs. Management responsibilities include managing technical staff, project planning and management, and program development. Program development responsibilities include identifying potential research areas and opportunities, developing laboratory's expertise and capabilities, and pursuing funding from sponsors. Technology leadership responsibilities include planning and leading research and programs that include the development and application of computational simulation tools to evaluate and analyze energy technologies and energy supply and demand systems from the perspective of cost and performance, end-use requirements, environmental impacts, and socioeconomic issues.
**Position Requirements**
+ Knowledge of electric power systems and electricity markets, both traditionally regulated and competitive wholesale markets.
+ Knowledge of smart building technologies and the performance, cost, and risks of energy efficiency measures.
+ Knowledge of conventional and next-generation manufacturing technologies, and their environmental impacts including energy use, water use, and emissions.
+ Experience conducting life cycle assessments and techno-economic analyses of energy, building, and industrial technologies.
+ Knowledge of advanced modeling and simulation techniques, including optimization, equilibrium simulation, and agent-based modeling.
+ Knowledge of energy storage systems and experience in techno-economic assessments and valuation analysis of various storage technologies.
+ Knowledge of hydroelectric system modeling, including pumped-storage technologies.

JOB FUNCTION:
Administers, plans, and schedules Hawaiian Electric's Customer Energy Resources (CER) programs for all territories, processes incoming interconnection applications from end to end, and coordinates program implementation and related activities for all existing and future CER programs as they evolve.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:
+ Reviews, processes, and documents incoming agreements and validation of completed projects within required timelines; checks for completeness and accuracy of submitted documents and rejects/returns incomplete submittals; updates internal trackers; initiates and reviews W9 requests; processes transition customer requests; follows up with solar contractors and/or customers to address discrepancies and responds to inquiries in a timely manner. Issues conditional pre-approvals to customers for CER interconnections. Works with other departments on interconnection process changes, technical review requirements, and communications.
+ Coordinates technical requirements; analyzes compliance documentation and executes agreements.
+ Assists in providing training and maintaining training material and documentation; planning and coordinating process improvements and quality control (QC)/quality assurance (QA) measures, and assuring these measures are in place; conduct periodic QC / QA checks of processes and reports results; ensure tariff timelines are in compliance.
+ Supports Division Director, Manager, and Supervisor to ensure customer compliance of installed and/or interconnected systems. Coordinates with Field Services, Revenue Protection, and others as needed to identify any unapproved/non-compliant photovoltaic (PV) systems, analyzes customer data, documents findings, ensures customer compliance, and policy enforcement. When agreement due dates are near or expired, analyzes, follows up, documents findings, and ensures customer compliance.
+ Assists in the following duties related to customer communication: drafting and/or revising customer correspondence as policies or processes change; drafts and submits periodic review updates to program content on company website, as well as educational material that is program-specific; and coordinates review of such material with the various departments as required.
+ Performs other duties as assigned related to program administration of existing and future CER programs. Participates in Customer Interconnection Tool (CIT) development and testing as needed. Sends existing equipment information or executed agreement information to customers when requested. Initiate trouble tickets for CIT when needed.
+ Participates in Company emergency response activities as assigned, including any activities required to prepare for such emergency response.
+ Other duties as assigned.
BASIC QUALIFICATIONS:
Knowledge Requirements
+ 4-Year degree from an ABET-accredited college.
+ Demonstrated working knowledge of Distributed Generation administration, processing, and tracking.

Manager, Energy Management System

SUMMARY

As a Manager, Grid Technologies, you will have the unique opportunity to lead a team responsible for reliably operating PGE's transmission and distribution systems in compliance with electric system reliability standards. You will manage activities that provide engineering and operational support for critical control center operational technology systems, with a focus on the Energy Management System (EMS). KEY RESPONSIBILITIES

Grid Operations Management - Manages a team of grid operations staff responsible for reliably operating PGE's transmission and distribution systems in compliance with electric system reliability standards, applicable tariffs and other rules, and taking actions necessary to protect electrical equipment and ensure public safety; provides technical management for the team, ensuring that objectives are met and all relevant standards/procedures are followed; ensures that operational problems are identified and resolved; ensures that operational procedures and working practices are current and fit for the purpose.

Control Center Operational Technology Systems - Manages activities that provide engineering and operational support for all control center operational technology systems (e.g., Energy Management System - EMS, Distribution Outage Management System - OMS, Advanced Distribution Management System - ADMS), and Historian systems of operational analysis; oversees the proper operations and maintenance of control center operational technology systems to ensure PGE's electric grid operates in a safe and efficient manner; oversees modifications to control center systems to ensure that field changes through construction and maintenance activities are correctly reflected in these systems in a timely manner for safe and reliable operations; ensures proper functioning of applications to provide situational awareness of transmission and generation constraints, high systems availability so that the 24/7 control center operations are not affected, and periodic systems testing at backup site so they are ready for emergency operations, if needed.

North American Electric Reliability Corporation (NERC) Compliance - Ensures staff follows proper change control processes modifying and upgrading EMS applications in accordance with NERC critical infrastructure protection (CIP) and other NERC reliability requirements; maintains comprehensive knowledge of a diverse set of NERC regulatory standards; serves as subject matter expert on NERC reliability compliance as it pertains to technology systems used in control center operations; monitors changes to NERC Reliability Standards and evaluates whether PGE should support revisions issued by NERC; ensures system upgrades and changes to the operational technology systems follow proper IT policies and procedures, including NERC CIP policies and procedures.

Critical System Support - Manages 24/7 support coverage to ensure that critical systems are always supported through appropriate on-call staffing, incident management and escalation process; ensures support is provided to control center operations during emergencies such as storms or other situations where an incident management team is stood up.

Grid Technology Projects - Initiates and manages technology projects in coordination with Grid Operations and IT management that improve operational effectiveness of the control center and its ability to adapt to changing operational needs and in support of PGE's strategic initiatives; leads efforts to research, develop, specify and implement technology systems used in 24/7 real-time operations of the control center functions.

Financial Management - Monitors and manages expenditures, ensuring that all financial targets are met, and examines any areas where budgets/expenditures vary from plan; assists with the definition and operation of effective financial controls and decision making.

Resourcing - Oversees resourcing decisions and planning for team; partners with HR in the definition of jobs, recruitment, evaluation and selection processes.

Professional Development - Reviews organizational development needs and training strategies to determine required learning and development outcomes for the team; provides guidance in the creation of development plans; monitors ongoing progress and provides coaching and mentoring and provides feedback; completes annual performance management reviews.

Primary Function: The job of Energy Management Systems Technician is done for the purpose/s of maintaining a variety of energy management systems, e.g. heating, air conditioning, etc.; identifying repair/replacement needs necessary to maintain equipment and systems; providing appropriate documentation required by other personnel and for conforming to regulations; and monitoring and programming energy systems.

Programs all energy management system computers for the purpose of adjusting the energy management programs for maximum efficiency.

Provides climate controls to all school district buildings for the purpose of ensuring comfort and efficient use of energy within facilities.

Records reports (e.g. work order, EPA logs, estimates, repair logs, etc.) for the purpose of documenting information for other personnel.

Requests equipment and supplies (e.g. replacement parts, thermostats, etc.) for the purpose of maintaining inventory and ensuring availability of required items.

What the Role Involves:

As an EMS Technician, you'll be responsible for documenting and installing control system hardware, cabling, and conduit that are necessary to facilitate refrigeration and building energy management conversions and upgrades.   • Prepare and assemble conduits and connect wiring through them
  • Prevent breakdown of systems by routinely inspecting and replacing old wiring and insulated cables, cleaning circuits etc.
  • Perform effective troubleshooting to identify hazards or malfunctions and repair or substitute damaged unit
  • Willingness and ability to travel 25% - 75% of the time.
