**The Team & Role**
Join our dynamic and innovative global engineering team as a **Modeling & Simulation Engineering Intern** and gain hands-on experience in developing and validating simulation models for HVACR systems and components. This internship offers a unique opportunity to collaborate with a global, multi-disciplinary team and contribute to Simulation driven product development.
You will get a chance to use industry leading modeling & simulation tools such as Ansys Mechanical or Ansys Fluent, Optimization tools such as Siemens Heeds, plus work closely with our experts on 1D modeling using GT-Suite.

**Job Summary**
Battelle is seeking a **Photonics Design and Simulation Engineering Intern** for **Spring and/or Summer Semester 2026.** This position is 100% onsite located in Columbus, OH. Battelle's Cyber Trust & Assurance division, in our National Security Global Business, is currently seeking someone with knowledge of photonics and optics with a background in modeling and simulation. This individual will support technical analyses, design, modeling, simulation, and testing capabilities for novel technology applications.
**The application deadline is October 15, 2025 or until filled.**
**Responsibilities**
Intern activities may include some or all of the following:
+ Support model development and simulation activities for investigating integrated optical circuit design for applications in sensing and quantum optics.
+ Assist component selection and design for passive and active photonic devices and circuits including components like waveguides, couplers, splitters, resonators, phase shifters, and interferometers, as well as selection of suitable sources and detectors.
+ Facilitate translation of design intent to layouts for photonic structures, and work with manufacturing teams to support device fabrication.
+ Write reports of methods used and results obtained.
**Key Qualifications**
+ Must be currently pursuing a Bachelors, Masters, or PhD in Physics, Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, Optical Sciences, or related fields.
+ Must have at least two years of college coursework completed.
+ 1+ years of industry, academic, or research experience in Photonic Integrated Circuit (PIC) design, simulation, layout, and testing.
+ Coursework in engineering (integrated optics, photonics, quantum optics)
+ Sound understanding of optical physics concepts.
+ Experience in simulation of photonics devices, waveguides, or similar technology using software applications such as Ansys Lumerical, COMSOL, Tidy3D, or other photonic simulation tools.
+ Experience in photonics layout tools such as KLayout, GDSFactory, Luceda, Cadence, Synopsys, etc.
+ Proficiency in python scripting and experience with Python driven simulation flows, e.g. Ansys python lumapi, Tidy3D, MEEP, DEVSIM.
+ Knowledge of electromagnetics, semiconductor devices, and materials science.
+ Experience within design, analysis, and/or manufacturing of photonic devices & optical components.
+ Solid verbal and written communication skills.
+ Able to work independently and as part of a team.
+ A positive attitude and willingness to take on technical challenges.
+ Working knowledge of Microsoft Office software including Word, Excel, and PowerPoint.
+ Must be a sole US Citizen with ability to obtain & maintain government security clearance.
**Preferred Qualifications**
+ Experience in design and construction of measurement & data acquisition systems related to standing up optics test stands, electrical probing, and microscopy.
+ Experience developing requirements and testing procedures for characterization of photonic devices.
+ Related work experience (paid or unpaid) is preferred.

**Senior Engineering Manager / Software** **- Flight Simulation (Onsite)**
The Simulation & Training Solutions (STS) Software Engineering department seeks a Senior Engineering Manager to head a team of software development engineers responsible for providing aviators and crew with the highest fidelity training solutions for the missions that they perform. This impact is felt both domestically and abroad with trainers for both our US Government and for international governments through Foreign Military Sales. This manager will lead engineers in development of simulation systems and products. This position will be based in Sterling Virginia and report directly to the Director of Software Engineering for STS.
The Senior Engineering Manager role is comprised of two main functions, a technical portion, and a leader portion.  In the technical area this role has direct responsibility for leadership and management of the software engineering discipline (scope, budget control) for special access programs through their full lifecycle. Participating in bids and proposals, detailed requirements, design, development, integration, test, verification and validation are areas of focus for this team. Candidate should have prior engineering experience with simulation systems or strong knowledge in software engineering, technical project or people leadership.
In this role, you will be responsible for identifying the necessary staff, facilities and equipment needed for successful execution of projects. You must have strong technical, leadership and organizational skills as well as project management experience. The Product Development Project Coordinator is responsible for assisting and supporting all phases of Food, Wine and Gift packaging development from Concept to Production. The coordinator assists the Project manager, tracking timelines and milestones for multiple items in various stages of development throughout the year. This position interfaces with several departments and vendors to obtain product information to meet timelines.


Primary Tasks and Responsibilities:

  • Assist with maintaining all Product Development schedules and timelines.
  • Initiate, maintain and update all Product Development Files.
  • Assist with Managing multiple projects at different stages of the development process.
  • Prepare Nutritional and technical file Inserts using Adobe Illustrator.
  • Create new component sheets for all Product Development packages.
  • Assist with proofing of all artwork, legal and FDA information on packaging, labels and informational sheets.
  • Review all vendors print proofs for mass production.
  • Create contents labels for towers/gifts (Wholesale & WC) using Adobe Illustrator and Bartender.
  • ·Assist with maintaining Nutritional & Kosher Libraries and Product files with updates.
  • Manage and support Label Group communications and requests to meet all Production timelines.
  • Manage Wine Label development process and prepare all documents for proofing review and annual approvals.


Secondary Tasks and Responsibilities

  • Work closely with the Purchasing team to obtain all Nutritional information: NFPs, ingredients and allergens/declarations.
  • Assist with proofing all Export labels and documentation.
  • Provide administrative support to the Project Manager as needed.
  • Assist with gathering all regulatory documents and cataloging.
  • Follow up with all teams on outstanding deliverables to meet timelines.
  • Assist with other tasks as assigned by management.


Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Possess strong written and verbal communication skills.
  • Possess a Basic understanding of Project Coordination and Management
  • Ability to understand product specifications and measurements.
  • Ability to Type 40 WPM or More
  • Highly Proficient with: MS-Office: Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint
  • Ability to create and maintain complex/detailed spreadsheets.
  • Knowledge of Adobe Illustrator (preferred, but will train)
  • Ability to multi-task in a fast-paced environment.
  • Possess a clear sense of ownership and accountability in your responsibilities.
  • Possess attention to detail, problem-solving and accuracy.
  • Excellent time management skills.
  • Ability to prioritize and manage daily workload.
