The California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) in Susanville, is seeking to hire an Engineering Student Assistant. Under the close supervision of the Division of Equipment, Shop 2 Highway Mechanic Supervisor and Heavy Equipment Mechanics in a learning capacity, the Student Assistant will assist in the inspection, diagnosis and repair of the Caltrans equipment fleet. The student will learn the principles of equipment repair and shop processes as they relate to the Caltrans fleet. The student will gain some exposure to equipment diagnostic software and Caltrans fleet management software Asset Works through the work of others. The Student Assistant will learn Snap-On, Service Maxx, Cummins Insite and Caterpillar diagnostic software. The Student Assistant will learn Preventive Maintenance procedures involving oil and lubrication change intervals, Basic Inspection of Terminal (BIT) inspections and shop safety procedures. Perform research for equipment specifications and parts ordering.

This position is for the 2025-2026 school year, with the possibility of extension.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Must possess and maintain a valid California driver's license.
  • Ability to:

    • Make appropriate, reasonable, feasible, defensible decisions and recommendations under the direction of the Highway Mechanic Supervisor or an assigned Heavy Equipment Mechanic.
    • Check accuracy of own work and review the work of others.
    • Knowledge of mechanical repair principles and their application to mobile equipment, design, manufacturing and maintenance.
    • Good personal interaction skills and the ability to effectively communicate and collaborate with others in various assignments.
    • Knowledge of computer applications for equipment diagnosis.
    • Writing skills and communication etiquette is mandatory.
  • Must maintain a minimum cumulative 2.0 GPA.
  • Must complete each term with minimum unit requirements for Undergraduate and Graduate student classifications. Proof will be collected at the end of each Spring and Fall term.
Preferred Qualifications

Duties and Responsibilities
  • In a learning compacity, assist a journey mechanic with Preventive Maintenance inspections and repairs or adjustments to ensure equipment runs safely. Inspect or change hoses, belts, brakes and tires. Fluid level checks, changes oil and filters, lubricates and tire rotations. Tunes gas and diesel engines.
    25% In a learning compacity, use the Departments Fleet Maintenance software to keep records. Utilizes diagnostic software such as Snap-On, Service Maxx, Cummins Insite and Caterpillar ET to communicate with vehicle on-board diagnostic equipment to retrieve fault codes.
  • In a learning compacity, assist a journey mechanic with repair and maintenance of trucks, automotive vehicles, tractors, graders, snowplows, diesel engines and gasoline engines.
  • In a learning compacity, assist in pressure washing vehicles and equipment. Parts deliveries and stocking shelves with surplus parts. Ensures safety standards by keeping tools and work area clean.

Come join the brightest minds at the most innovative R&D facility supporting our national security! The Test Engineering (V-14) Thermal & Mechanical team is seeking a recent graduate looking for a challenging postgraduate internship at the post-baccalaureate level.
We are seeking a proactive and technically strong mechanical test engineer with a focus on developing and optimizing mechanical testing processes. A strong emphasis will be placed on data acquisition, analysis, and interpretation of test results to inform engineering decisions. As a V-14 Post-Bac, we will provide you with a mentor, a challenging project, and an opportunity to present your work and progress to colleagues.
**What You Need**
**Minimum Job Requirements:**
+ Coding experience (Python preferred)
+ Experience with data analysis of moderately sized data files.
+ Interest in the mechanics of materials
**Education/Experience:**
Position requires a Bachelor's degree in mechanical engineering or related discipline from an accredited institution with a cumulative GPA of at least 2.75.
**Desired Qualifications:**
+ Experience with mechanical testing (quasi-static, fracture, etc.)
+ Experience in test fixture design and assembly
+ Experience in 3D CAD (Solidworks) and creation of engineering drawings
+ Experience with optical displacement measurement techniques, such as digital image correlation, extrinsic Fabry-Perot fiberoptic interferometry.
