Job Description

We are seeking a highly motivated and qualified mid-level civil engineering technician to join our construction services team and to lead or support field operations on active highway projects.   

Description

  • Lead projects and/or perform daily construction inspection on WisDOT highway and bridge projects, ensuring contractor compliance with project plans, specifications, and standards.
  • Document field activities, track quantities, and prepare daily inspection reports using WisDOT-approved systems (e.g., AASHTOWare Project).
  • Conduct or observe field testing of materials (concrete, asphalt, soils, aggregates) in accordance with WisDOT requirements.
  • Communicate and coordinate with project engineers, contractors, and WisDOT staff to address issues in the field.
  • Perform or support team with project documentation, pay estimates, and plan interpretation.
  • Assist with traffic control checks, erosion control monitoring, and safety compliance.

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • Associate degree in Civil Engineering Technology or related field
  • 6-15+ years of experience in roadway or bridge construction inspection
  • Familiarity with WisDOT specifications, standards, and documentation procedures (preferred)

Technical Knowledge

  • WisDOT HTCP certifications (Aggregates, Concrete, Asphalt, Density) strongly preferred; ability to obtain if not already certified.

Professional Skills

  • Effective conflict resolution and problem-solving abilities.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills to work effectively in the field with contractors, WisDOT, and project teams.
  • Strong organizational and recordkeeping skills.

  • Associate degree in Manufacturing/Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or an automation engineering related area with six years of relevant experience OR bachelor’s degree from an accredited college or university Manufacturing/Industrial Technology, Manufacturing Engineering, or an automation engineering related area.
    • Relevant experience to include occupational experience in an electromechanical technology related field, of which at least 1 year (2,000 hours) shall be within 5 years prior to date of hire. One year (2,000 hours) of recent related occupational experience may be waived if the applicant has at least 2 years of post−secondary teaching experience in the appropriate occupational field within 5 years prior to date of hire.
  • Extensive experience with automation engineering technology. The ideal candidate will have HMI, VFD, motion, networks, hydraulic and pneumatic troubleshooting and repair, instrumentation, and motor control experience in one or more of the following automation platforms: Siemens, Mitsubishi and Rockwell Automation, with Rockwell preferred.
  • Experience in mechanical drive line systems and shaft alignment, electrical and PLC troubleshooting and repair, installation and maintenance of PLC and motor drives.
  • Experience with mechanical power transmission systems preferred.

Engineering Interns at Phillips Medisize are assigned to one of our many U.S. locations to help support innovation, process efficiency, product reliability, and quality assurance, with a large overarching focus on compliance, safety, and health. When considering and selecting location preferences, candidates should consider those facilities in which they're willing to work for the duration of their time as an intern, in addition to where they'd be interested in receiving a full-time offer from, should they perform well.

What You Will Do

Our internship program seeks talent from many disciplines including (but not limited to):

  • Biomedical Engineering (manufacturing focus)

  • Quality, Operational Excellence, Process Engineering

Some examples of responsibilities or projects include:

  • Engage with a focused team of engineers to support the product development process ensuring robust product / process design and manufacturability in low and high volumes.
  • Develop and implement a cost-effective manufacturing strategy for new products to meet customer's production and delivery requirements.
  • Ensure top quality of products by updating work instructions, resolving quality issues, and keeping up-to-date engineering records and documentation
  • Work with New Product Introduction (NPI) and/or Sustaining Engineers as needed to debug new products and processes, to validate product performance, and meet customer needs - delivery, quality, and performance.
  • Support plant engineers as needed in production capacity planning and continual process improvements.
  • Work alongside engineers from a variety of disciplines - quality, manufacturing, project, process, etc. to meet business goals

Xcel Energy is seeking candidates to support our Major Projects Group, working in-person on active construction projects. The paid internship provides an opportunity to showcase your abilities in the engineering group that supports both new construction and retrofits of electric power plants. The program provides practical work experience in construction project management and field engineering, developing your skills in real-time problem solving, application of engineering principles, and professional communication. Each intern will have the opportunity to see first-hand how a project is built from an already completed set of engineered drawings. **Sherco Generating Station - Becker, MN:**

+ 1 Mechanical Engineering Intern:
**Sherco Solar & Battery Storage - Becker, MN:**

**Typical intern responsibilities may include but are not limited to:**
+ Participate in construction oversight and planning, field inspections, and safety observations.
+ Collaborate with Xcel staff to ensure the project is built in accordance with applicable engineering codes and standards.
+ Learn about drawing updates and field engineering changes that occur during an active project.
+ Gain knowledge of how to manage vital professional project relationships.
+ Assist with internal documentation, tracking of project metrics, and reporting.
+ Assist with vendor outreach and coordination.
This position is for a June 1, 2026 start date. This position may have the possibility to extend beyond the internship's initial term based on the candidate's successful performance and Xcel Energy's business needs.
**Minimum Requirements:**
+ Enrolled in an ABET accredited electrical, mechanical, or civil engineering program.
+ Current student, Sophomores and higher (Graduating Seniors as of Spring 2026 (not continuing to Graduate School) are not eligible to participate.)
+ Able to work full-time during the summer, 40 or more hours per week.
+ Must have a reliable means of transportation to be able to commute to work 100% in-person at the assigned project site.
+ Candidate must either already live within a commutable distance or be able to relocate for several months.
+ Must have a valid driver license and personal vehicle
**Preferred Qualifications:**
+ 3.0 GPA (out of a 4.0 scale) or higher
+ Completed 2 years of undergraduate coursework.
+ Experience or Proficiency with Microsoft Office applications.
