Roles and Responsibilities:

Under the guidance of on-site electrical engineers (EEs):

  • Prepare electrical test setups on HVAC systems, ensuring safe operation through protective devices and appropriate power limits

  • Capture measurements at system and PCBA level, modifying the setup as necessary (e.g. soldering test point wires onto PCBA)

  • Perform PCBA-level rework (e.g. soldering) on prototype boards

  • Create electrical cable harnesses as required

  • Document test procedures, setup, and results

  • Communicate results and feedback to EEs

  • Improve lab space to facilitate effective and efficient experimentation

  • Weekly, place purchases of electrical components from online suppliers against a Purchase Order (PO)

  • Weekly, prepare shipments of equipment between work sites

  • On occasion, perform mechanical work to support lab space (e.g. drill/saw/file opening on metal enclosure)

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Familiarity with fundamental electrical concepts (voltage, current (AC + DC), power, resistance, capacitance, inductance, transformers)

  • Experience with electrical validation test setup and protective devices (circuit breaker, relay, fuse, overvoltage/current protection)

  • Experience with electrical tools and techniques (oscilloscope, digital multi meter (DMM), DC power supply, AC power supply, electronic load)

  • Printed circuit board assemblies (PCBA): Ability to solder surface-mount components and perform rework involving component removal, addition, and modification

  • Ability to create an electrical cable harness (wire cutter, wire stripper, crimper, pin/socket crimp/housing)

  • Experience with high-voltage AC (HVAC) (480V 3-phase, 240V split-phase) systems

  • Ability to read electrical schematics

  • Experience with documentation (photo, spreadsheet, table, graph)

  • Ability to communicate results and feedback

Minimum Qualifications:

  • High School Diploma

  • 2 Years of relevant work experience

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with electrical wiring (e.g. electrician experience)

  • Experience with mechanical fabrication (hand tools, power tools)

Position Purpose:

The Clinical Engineering Technician (CET) functions as part of the Clinical Engineering team providing medical equipment and technology management services to Renown Health. The CET is required to install, inspect, troubleshoot, repair, calibrate, and verify the performance of general biomedical equipment under the close supervision of the leadership of the Clinical Engineering Department. Increasing aspects of the job are administrative and consultative: participating in equipment and resource planning and allocation; doing research, providing technical consultation, assistance and training to clinical and other organizational personnel; participating on project, construction and perpetual quality improvement teams involving technology; managing vendor services; and coordinating special projects and activities in assigned service areas.

The Clinical Engineering Department's purpose is to support a safe patient care and treatment environment through the effective management of clinical engineering technology. Flexibility and the ability to identify and shift priorities and activities regularly are imperative.

The CET works as a member of the Clinical Engineering team so a high level of communication, cooperation, and coordination are required to complete work, share information, allocate resources, develop policies and procedures, resolve problems and pursue quality/performance improvement opportunities.

Functions with a great deal of independence in identifying, initiating and completing work assignments: therefore, self-motivation and initiative are necessary.

Functions under continual time pressures: to respond to stat calls; to identify and correct problems; to return critical equipment and systems to service.

Responds to routine and stat service calls on a range of electrical, electronic, electro mechanical, mechanical and pneumatic medical equipment and devices. Differentiates equipment failures from environmental, applications, supplies, operator or patient induced problems. Takes actions to correct non-equipment problems. Troubleshoots equipment failure to the board or component level, as appropriate and most cost effective. Orders parts considering alternative parts options for cost savings and improvements. Determines vendor service requirements; arranges and monitors vendor service. Repairs or oversees repairs of equipment. Calibrates to manufacturer's specifications and inspects for proper operation prior to returning equipment to service. Documents, in detail all work performed.

Performs and documents performance assurance inspections on assigned equipment to include physical, functional, calibration and electrical safety checks. Participates in development and assignment of equipment risk designations. Reviews and gives feedback on potential revisions to performance assurance procedures.

Performs incoming inspection of all medical equipment items entering the system including new, leased, loaned, rented, physician or patient owned. Inspection may include uncrating, assembly, checking equipment for physical shipping damage, comparison to purchase documents, complete system check-out against manufactures' specifications, electrical safety testing, initiation of equipment historical documents in computerized maintenance and management system (CMMS), and coordination of installation and operator training.

Serves as a contact person and coordinator of activities and information for assigned service areas. Interacts with service area personnel, serves on work teams, as needed; coordinates and performs special projects, research and training for equipment operators. Communicates status of service area activities to supervisor, coordinator and/or team as appropriate.

Documents all operator induced equipment problems and follow-up corrective activity on work order. Instructs individuals and groups of equipment users on proper and safe use of equipment on informal ad hoc basis. Schedules formal in-service training programs, coordinates, and attends vendor training; provides follow-up to vendor training. Research, develop and teach operator training programs as required.

Assists other technicians in problem resolutions. Provides formal technical training to other technicians, as needed; researches, develops program and teaches session. Shares information with other technicians upon return from vendor service school.

Assists and advises health care providers to resolve problems and concerns in cases of patient emergencies and equipment problems caused by applications, use, or patient interface with medical equipment.

Coordinates new equipment evaluations in conjunction with supervisor and user departments. Provides technical assessment and recommendations on purchase options.

Coordinates new equipment installations including, receiving, acceptance testing, cable pulling, physical installation, coordination of maintenance and vendor installation activities, operator education and excess equipment removal and disposition.

Work schedules may be shifted to accommodate needs of the organization and/or to accomplish special projects and service requirements. Callbacks for emergencies and overtime are occasionally required. This position does not provide patient care.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

1. Skills in interpersonal communications, especially verbal. Ability to explain complex technical issues in lay terms. Ability to calm and appease clinical personnel in difficult situations.

2. The individual should be competent in the use of all applicable test equipment and tools required in the performance of these duties. Examples include, but are not limited to Electrical Safety Analyzer, Defibrillator Analyzer and Electrosurgical Unit Tester.

3. Knowledge of equipment functions with the ability to independently troubleshoot and repair basic and complex electronic circuits.

4. Ability to read technical service manuals and schematics and troubleshoot electronic equipment to board and component level.

5. Ability to complete required equipment repairs including disassembly, component/assembly replacement, reassembly and testing.

This is a high-visibility role, serving as a conduit between Quality and Engineering to VPs, and supporting the KS team.   • Establish and monitor the team's performance ensuring aligned KPIs to the organization's strategic objectives and with all other functional groups while ensuring compliance to company policies.
  • Plans and administers department budget, capital expenditures and direct/indirect labor costs by maintaining inventory and head count controls.
  • Reviews and leads reporting of company performance data (sales, profitability, productivity, quality, finances, staffing, etc.) utilizing this data to make department structure and strategy recommendations in support of the business.
  • Leads the establishment of company Business Plan KPI targets for Quality across all business units, drives accountability of business units to achieving Business Plan and escalates risk to Sr. Management quickly.
  • Leads Quality Engineering continuous improvement cost avoidance projects to reduce total cost of quality, optimize processes efficiency and decrease non-conformance.
  • Champion design to quality principals and quality first behaviors, transparency, and collaboration to internal and external stakeholders
  • Assure compliance and continuous improvements to all quality management systems as well as the integration with other management systems such as, IATF 16949:2016, ISO 9001, 14001, 45001, etc. required for all vehicle manufacturers suppliers.
  • Develop and execute continuous improvement plans on standards, methods, metrics, and procedures for inspecting, testing, and evaluating the precision, accuracy, and reliability of our product and equipment.
  • Lead failure investigation and corrective action for production, quality, and customer related failures, and facilitate customer quality & reliability interactions.
  • Drive on-time root cause analysis and corrective preventive actions to resolve equipment design and product design deficiencies.
  • Be a key player in the local leadership team for all issues by providing leadership during problem resolution events, such as S1, F1, and management of change opportunities.
  • Champion and support all corporate Quality initiatives and core business processes such as Hoshin, Obeya, 4M, QRRPR.
  • Work closely with three direct reports and collaborate across quality and engineering teams.
  • Experience detecting waste and flaws in manufacturing processes is highly desirable.
  • Ideal candidates will be able to hit the ground running and preferrably be operating at the director level.
  • Ability to travel as required of the position and other duties as may be assigned.

Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) Requirements:

To ensure the health and safety in the workplace and for the protection of our employees, wearing PPE is a requirement for some roles at PENA and may include equipment such as a full Tyvek suit, safety shoes, gloves, safety glasses, face mask, bump cap, and a full hazmat suit that includes a respirator.

Qualificatoins:

  • Basic/Required: Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Quality, Reliability, Continuous Improvement, or related supply chain and manufacturing field.
  • 10+ years minimum Quality & Reliability experience required in high volume manufacturing (battery, automotive, semiconductor, medical devices at 1M+ units per day).
  • Experience utilizing quality management tools including statistical decision-making methods, process capability analysis, Measurement System Analysis (MSA), Gage Repeatability and Reproducibility (GR&R) and Design of Experiments (DoE)
  • Experience in continuous improvement and structure problem solving techniques and tools such as 8-D, fishbone, FTA, FMEA and other quality tools
  • Must be team oriented with attention to detail and excellent verbal and written communication skills are required
  • Ability to interact effectively with various levels of management is required
  • Knowledge of 6 Sigma methods and techniques, process control systems, process capability, measurements, and analysis, FMEA, preventive action, and continuous improvement programs required
  • Experience with ISO 9001 quality management systems and auditing
  • Proficient in MS Office Suite, especially Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook.
  • Must have working-level knowledge of the English language, including reading, writing, and speaking English

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Preferred: Master's degree in Engineering (Mechanical, Industrial, Chemical, or related fields).
  • Experience integrating AI and machine learning tools is highly desirable, especially in smart factory environments. Familiarity with Palantir and foundry systems is a plus
  • Battery manufacturing experience preferred; automotive or semiconductor backgrounds also highly relevant.
  • Previous work experience in a cross-culture; international environment or Japanese business culture a big plus.
